- Dexter is hampered by his neighborhood's increased vigilance due to vandalism, his temporary inability to drive himself anywhere, and his admiration for the killing technique of the artful Trinity Killer.
- We open with a neighborhood barbecue at Dexter's and Rita's place. Rita found out Dexter lied about his medical clearance and will now be doing all of his driving for a few days. Dexter learns that there is a neighborhood vandal. Dexter is introduced to neighbor Andy and his son Jesse (who it appears Astor has a crush on). Andy's wife passed away last year. Dexter is still struggling with his relationship with Astor.
That night we see Trinity (John Lithgow] drive Carla to an empty warehouse. He takes her to a fifth story ledge and tells her "it's time for you to jump." When she begs for her life Trinity threatens to kill her husband and children. Carla accepts her fate and asks Trinity to push her. He will not: "It doesn't work that way." She lets go and falls to her death. Before leaving, Trinity wipes something on the ground near one of Carla's hands.
The next morning Dexter's front fence has been spray painted. Harry tries to convince Dexter that the neighborhood and family have put him in a dangerous spot. A can of spray paint was left by the fence.
Anton gets a local job, meaning he won't have to leave home on the cruise ships.
The department has been unable to locate vacation murder suspect Johnny Rose. Maria is leaning towards funneling man-power to finding Rose. Quinn gives Dexter a pair of quality tickets to a Dolphins game. Dexter walks away and immediately hands them to Vince. Dexter has to ride with Debra and Quinn to the scene of Carla's murder.
As they examine the body, Dexter wonders about Trinity's code. Quinn is convinced they are dealing with a suicide. Lundy shows up to observe. Lundy tells Debra he's glad to be in Miami so he can be near her. Lundy guesses correctly that Carla has a husband and two kids and imagines a similar death occurred previously.
Dexter arrives home to learn a neighbor has installed a motion-activated security spotlight. Inside Rita is hosting a neighborhood watch meeting. They are beginning to organize patrols. Astor and Jesse are flirting, and he tells her Andy has recently been laid-off. Dexter grabs a soda can which has Jesse's fingerprints on it.
In the office Dexter finds the fingerprint on the spray paint is Jesse's. Quinn still doesn't buy Lundy's theory that Carla was the victim of a serial killer. Maria and Angel leave together to interview a Rose lead. Debra finds an eerily similar jumping death which occurred 30 years earlier at the same warehouse. Anton arrives to take Debra to lunch.
Anton and Debra join Dexter at an outside table. Lundy sits down with them just as Dexter leaves. They tell Anton they are working on a case together.
Rose opens fire on Maria and Angel at the hotel where he was hold-up. He flees the scene.
That night a ski mask-clad Dexter sneaks up behind Jesse. Before he can scare the kid the neighborhood watch chases him through several backyards. Dexter is barely able to avoid capture.
The next morning Dexter and Rita are shown that the vandal broke into a car and let it roll onto their lawn, crushing Cody's bicycle.
Vince drops dummies from the warehouse to see whether the victim might have been pushed. Quinn is pissed to learn Vince got the football tickets from Dexter. Lundy tells Dexter the next Trinity murder should be a man getting bludgeoned. Lundy thinks there have been at least 15 Trinity cycles. He thinks Trinity must be a lone wolf character, much like himself.
Cut to Trinity at home, pouring the substance he wiped near Carla's body back into an urn. Trinity pours a glass of scotch and places it in front of the empty seat next to the urn: "Drink up, you're next," he says.
Quinn is trying to keep Christine from printing anything negative about the vacation murders. Vince says evidence points to Carla jumping without being pushed. Maria pulls Debra off Carla's case and puts her on the vacation murders. Quinn confronts Dexter about his attempts to "make it good." He turns furious when Dexter refers to him as a dirty cop. Quinn thinks Dexter doesn't understand what it is like to be a cop.
Debra drives Dexter home and the two discuss the issues with their personal lives. Dexter thinks his house has gotten too crowded and Debra is missing the time alone she had when Anton would leave on cruises.
Inside Dexter checks on Cody, who cut his foot on broken class from the car. He vows to take care of Jesse that night. Dexter apologizes to Astor and she seems to connect with him.
Maria tells Angel she is concerned with people seeing them be close.
While Christine gives Quinn a topless back massage, he spills the beans that Lundy is back in town looking into a possible serial killer.
Lundy and Debra appear to be connecting while they work on the Trinity case at a restaurant. Anton calls, but Debra tells him she's going to be working late.
Dexter hears a smash nearby as he breaks into Jesse's house. The plan is to wait for the teen in his empty room. Dexter is stunned to find Jesse asleep in his bed. He hears the real vandal, Andy, come back into the house and confronts the man in his garage. Hidden by a mask and flashlight, Dexter warns Andy not to vandalize anything else. They struggle and Dexter gets the upper hand. Andy says that despite "playing by the rules" life has become a disaster. When Dexter threatens to hurt Jesse, Andy promises to stop committing crimes. On Dexter's way into the house the spotlight hits him in the face. Dexter smashes the light with a rake just as Rita walks into the backyard.
