Breathtaking and horrifying, Hurricane Sandy's devastating aftermath left many speechless and others still talking. "Go Home Sandy," "Boo! Go Away Sandy We Want Candy," "Better Safe than Sandy," and a slew of other witty taunts graffitied onto boarded windows and doors tried to disguise mass fear. Hundreds of 3x3 white hate-notes with brief messages to Sandy veiled shop windows in New York City. Written in different languages, the sentiment was the same. The superstormdid not discriminate, decimating already poverty-stricken and economically challenged islands including Cuba and Haiti but also sweeping away multi-million dollar homes along the gold coast of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut.
Restless winds and waves ravaged seashores, uprooted massive trees, embroiled electrical wires, and ripped up rooftops, leaving millions of people in a cold, dark, empty shell, watching, wondering, waiting to breathe again. Peruvian brothers Daniel and Diego Vega who blasted on the international scene with Octubre (they'll be at New Directors/New Films next) will be returning to Cannes for their second trip in a row as part of the 2011's L’Atelier -- the Cannes initiative where the participants complete financing packages for their films. Previous projects (I'll take 2008 as an example) include Oleg Novkovic's White, White World, Benedek Fliegauf's Womb, Braden King's Here which just preemie at Sundance and Berlin and you have Lou Ye's "Bitch" which is now called Love & Bruises (look for a Main Comp entry at Cannes this year). Along with the Vega brothers, notable names include the Un Certain Regard selected R U There (2010) helmer David Verbeek and Alvaro Brechner who directed Bad Day to Go Fishing (2010). We'll have more on some select names below -- here are the fifteen selected projects who'll...

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

I’ll keep it brief, because there is only so much bashing one film can take from one man, and I dont usually believe in exorcising critical demons in public unless a film really Really deserves it. But trust me, R U There did deserves it with a vengeance. I am enormously astounded that the film got more applause than Robin Hood, and that it’s current Jury rating (according to Variety) is around the 3/4 mark- I only assume I was watching the wrong film.
The film is ostensibly the tale of a professional video gamer who, during a tournament in China, falls in love with a local, and basically buys her attention for the time he remains in China. It falls somewhere in the uber-modern romance story bracket, but it clearly has aspirations above its station. The first (long) half an hour or so is spent establishing that the...

Over the weekend I was hard at work adding additional titles debuting at this year's 2010 Cannes Film Festival in an effort to make sure once I am in town it is all about seeing the movies and working as little as possible on the asset process. As a result, I now have 17 of the 18 films in competition in the database as information on Sergei Loznitsa's Schastye Moe (My Joy) doesn't seem to be available. However, information on the other 17 is now readily available along with some new pictures and trailers for several of them.
First off, to the right is one of the first three images available for Mathieu Amalric's Tournee, of which I also have the official synopsis for the film from the man most of you know as the villain from Quantum of Solace or Jean-Dominique Bauby from The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

As I suggested in my last update, the Cannes film festival line-up we announced earlier this month has since changed slightly, with new additions coming quickly after the initial announcement, and the hoped for inclusion of Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life not making it to the party after all. Below is the new- and with only a week or so left until the Festival opens with Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood- presumably the absolute final line-up for this year’s programmes. All titles have been translated into English for ease where they re not obviously translatable.

The Festival de Cannes lives up to its name in its selection of its first 16 Competition Films from 13 countries. But an international cry went up when at the first announcement not a single picture was directed by a woman in the Competition area. (Last year there were directors Jane Campion, Isabel Coixet and Andrea Arnold.) However, the Closing Night film was just announced and it is Julie Bertucelli’s The Tree, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Marton Csokas and Aden Young. It will close the 63rd Festival de Cannes on Sunday, May 23rd following the Awards Ceremony. Memento is the international sales agent. Contacts for all films are listed below.

Updated 04/19 They've added two titles but none to the actual competition list just yet. Updates are included below
04/15 Yes, they will add a few titles. Looking round the web people expect something like 4 to 5 more films to show up. Speculation that Malick's Tree of Life or Nolans Inception or Schnabel's Miral probably won't die until after they add said missing titles. But if you're heading over to the South of France next month or merely reading along on various Twitter feeds or film blogs, these are some of the titles you'll be hearing about.
Blanchett. Crowe. Scott
Opening Night Film
Because you have to kick off with a starry entry for that maximum red carpet kick. It gets the international and mainstream press excited and you need their eyeballs... even if your festival is for the global cinephiles.
Robin Hood (Ridley Scott)
I'm amused that the tagline is marketing this as an "untold story". Hee.

Only a few recognisable entires have made their way into the 63rd Cannes Film Festival line-up which has proven quite globally diverse this year.
High-profile films like arthouse darling Gregg Araki's new sexy sci-fi tale "Kaboom", Ridley Scott's big-budget epic "Robin Hood", Stephen Frears' graphic novel adaptation "Tamara Drewe", Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and Woody Allen's "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" will all screen but won't be up for awards.
Mike Leigh's "Another Year", Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Biutiful" and Doug Liman's "Fair Game" are among the more higher profile entires in official competition this year. "Ringu" director Hideo Nakata's British feature "Chatroom" and Derek Cianfrance's Sundance entry "Blue Valentine" made unexpected but welcome appearances in the 'Un Certain Regard' line-up.
Most surprising are the omissions. Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life" and Christopher Nolan's "Inception" will Not be screening,...

The lineup for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival set to run from May 12 - 23 was announced this morning in Paris, France at the Grand Hotel. On top of the information you'll read below, Twitter user OnTheCroisette added additional information as did ioncinema who specifically reports Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life is 'not ready'" and will not be included in the festival as was previously expected. OnTheCroisette said the Cannes selection committee saw a "copy" of the film, and "anything could happen in the coming weeks," but I'm not holding my breath.
Word from the press conference is that we can expect four to six additional films announced over the coming days/weeks. What will they be? Olivier Assayas's Carlos? Julian Schnabel's Miral? Francois Ozon's Potiche? Bruce Robinson's Rum Diary? Take a look at the list and my brief commentary below and let us know what you think.

Well… hot off the presses… here’s the list for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, which will head-juried this year by Tim Burton.
Although, from what I’m hearing, this isn’t definitive, as some films are still yet to be announced. However, here are those that have… I’ll scrub through it later for any films that should be highlighted on this blog. But, I’ll say right now that there’s just 1 black film on this list – Un homme qui crie by Chadian filmmaker, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun. Long-time readers of this blog should recognize his name. He was the mastermind behind a film called Daratt.
Take a peek (the list will be updated throughout the day, as necessary):
• In Competition (Country of origin in parentheses):
“The Housemaid” by Im Sang-soo (Sk)
“Poetry” by Lee Chan-dong (Fr/Sk)
“Outrage” by Takeshi Kitano (Jp)
“Loong Noonmee Raleuk Chaat by...
