The popcorn bucket wars are heating up.
After high-profile entries from Alien: Romulus and Deadpool & Wolverine, Gladiator II has entered the arena — or more accurately, entered with the arena.
The movie’s official social media accounts today featured a video of “The Ar-ena Popcorn Bucket,” which is lap-sized, circular Roman Colosseum perfect for holding plenty of that titular concession. The item comes equipped with an Qr code that, when scanned, conjures up a visualized gladiator battle. The promo language invites fans to “finish the popcorn, scan the code, and let the games begin.”
If you want one, you’ll likely have to head to a Cinemark theater. It’s the only domestic major chain that will have the ARena bucket — though there are a few smaller exhibitors in the mix, as well.

The BBC has picked up Nicole Kidman’s The Last Anniversary, the latest adaptation from Big Little Lies scribe Liane Moriarty.
Deadline revealed casting for The Last Anniversary for Australia’s Binge last year and the series will star Teresa Palmer (The Clearing, A Discovery of Witches, The Fall Guy), Miranda Richardson (Good Omens, Spider) and Danielle Macdonald (The Tourist, Patti Cake$).
Having previously bought Moriarty adaptation Apples Never Fall, the BBC has snapped The Last Anniversary up for iPlayer in a deal with distributor Fifth Season.
Moriarty’s book is set on Scribbly Gum Island, a place of many secrets. The one that made it famous – the disappearance of a young couple decades ago – might have made the island a destination for true crime tourists, but when it comes to secrets, the three generations of women that call Scribbly Gum home, hold far more.

We're stepping into the ring on the Pilot TV Podcast this week as we sent our very own journalistic heavyweight Boyd Hilton to chat to Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal about their Spanish-language boxing drama La Máquina on Disney+ [36:25 — 52:15 approx]. And that's not all in the fisticuff quarters, as we (non-literally) bash Kay for daring to take some time off work to go to a wellness retreat and give James an earful for his egregious (if entirely oblivious) queue-jumping.
Back on the actual TV talk front however, James, Kay, and Boyd embrace the spooky season's commencement with a listener question that's all about the best TV-based horrors. (No prizes for guessing how far we get without a shoutout for The Last Of Us!) There's also some chat about what the team have all been watching this week — including Apples Never Fall, Heartstopper Season 3, and, er, that Philip Schofield island thing on Channel 5.

Actor Clark Duke made his feature directorial debut with the 2020 crime film Arkansas (you can read our 8/10 review at This Link), and now Deadline reports that he has just wrapped production on his second feature, a comedic thriller called Stranglehold, which also happens to be set in Arkansas. The cast includes Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars), Justin Long (Barbarian), Jake Lacy (Apples Never Fall), and Ron Perlman (Hellboy).
Described as “a Southern-fried siege, with shades of Dog Day Afternoon and Die Hard,” while also being “in the vein of the Coen Brothers’s oeuvre,” Stranglehold follows Bailey (Benson), an exotic dancer with big dreams. She and her Army vet husband Tim (Lacy) are fed up with their lives of barely getting by in small-town Arkansas, so they decide to rob the strip club that employs her. Peacock lost (a rounded) 1 million subscribers from April to June, Comcast revealed on Tuesday in its second-quarter 2024 earnings materials. It now has 33 million subs, per the financial statements; the same statements listed Peacock as having a rounded 34 million subscribers as of March 31, 2024.
Either way, it still isn’t making money. The streamer lost $348 million in Q2, an improvement over the first quarter’s $639 million loss. NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast, has not yet set a target for Peacock to turn a profit. Even the three CEOs at Paramount Global have set an expectation of profitability for their core streaming service, Paramount+ (it’s 2025).
Peacock posted revenue of $1.0 billion for this past quarter, which was also down from Q1. Comcast’s main revenue stream remains its broadband business.

Remember the dancing yet murderous doll, M3GAN? Well, she'll soon be back in an upcoming horror film called M3GAN 2.0. This is the sequel to the box office hit M3GAN, and we can't wait to see it when it hits theaters on its (new) release date, June 27, 2025.
We first learned of a potential sequel back in November 2022 when The New York Times reported that Universal (the studio behind the film) was happy with how M3GAN turned out and was looking to make a second film. Then, in January 2023, M3GAN director Gerard Johnstone confirmed that talks were being had about a sequel in an interview with Collider. In that same interview, James Wan, writer and producer of M3GAN, mentioned that he had an idea of where a second film would go.

Last week, Australia’s screen industries were celebrating an increase in the country’s Location Offset scheme, but this week “great angst” is washing through the production community.
That’s according to Screen Producers Australia CEO Matthew Deaner, who has warned that while the government keeps overdue streaming regulation on hold, Australia is “on track to develop more as a service provider for Hollywood productions.”
“While the recent confirmation of the increase in Australia’s Location Offset that benefits non-Australian projects was great news, the absence of commensurate certainty for Australia’s home-grown industry and Australian projects through streaming regulation is now causing great angst in our industry,” said Deaner.
The Spa supported raising the Location Offset rebate for TV and film productions shooting in the country from the previous 16.5% to 30%, which will likely trigger more overseas investment, and the service work it could bring, but has been vocally critical...

Australia has juiced its tax incentives for foreign, mostly Hollywood movies and TV series that shoot locally.
The federal government has passed legislation to boost the 16.5 percent location to 30 percent. The near doubling of the location offset will apply to local Australian movies but with a catch. Producers must have budgets of at least Aus$20 million (US$13.3 million) for production, or Aus$1.5 million (US$1 million) per hour for a TV series.
That means mostly foreign and especially Hollywood productions will benefit from the increased location offset for blockbuster projects as Australia looks to be more competitive with rival international jurisdictions and draw more projects and employment to its shores.
“This is fantastic news for the industry. The 30 percent location offset will provide certainty for international productions, supporting a stable pipeline of work for thousands of Australian screen workers and businesses and triggering investment into new industry capacity and capabilities,” Kate Marks,...

In September 2021, Olivia Colman bagged her first career Emmy for “The Crown” despite having failed on her Oscar bid for “The Father” five months earlier. This made her the 16th performer to triumph at the Emmys after going home empty-handed at the same year’s Oscars and the fourth to do so during the 21st century. The release of the 2024 Emmy nominations ballots confirmed that nine of the 16 actors who lost at the latest Oscars ceremony are capable of joining Colman on said list.
Gold Derby’s current Emmy odds indicate that the man and woman with the best hopes of following in Colman’s footsteps are Ryan Gosling and Jodie Foster, who just earned their respective third and fifth Academy Award notices for their supporting turns in “Barbie” and “Nyad.” They are now generally expected to share in the experience of being first-time acting Emmy nominees thanks to his...

Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.
The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.

While in development for the Amazon Prime drama “Expats,” creator, writer and director Lulu Wang knew she had to pay tribute to the lives lost during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Having been in China at that time as a child, she remembers how scared she was when her father nearly left to join the protest which ultimately led to the death of hundreds.
“My father was supposed to go to this protest and my mother said to him a speech, which is in the show. She said, ‘Out there, you are an ant. You can give your life and it will not make that big of a difference. They’ll forget about you. But you’re my whole world, and you’re Lulu’s whole world,'” Wang said during Variety‘s Night in the Writers Room on June 13. “I said to the studio and I said to [Nicole Kidman], ‘If I do this series,...

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss turned to the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy to help create their highly anticipated follow-up to Game of Thrones. Alongside Alexander Woo, they worked to parse a TV audience-friendly narrative from the popular, if scientifically dense, odyssey about an encounter with an alien civilization looking for a new and viable planet.

The author of six novels, Doerr won the Pulitzer Prize for his 2014 novel about two teenagers on opposite sides of World War II. The Netflix miniseries — which also follows the tandem stories of Werner, the orphan forced to enlist as a Nazi soldier, and Marie-Laure, a blind girl sending radio broadcasts for the Allied soldiers — has garnered criticism for its relative dreariness, but its source material is full of hope and,...

Exclusive: Heyday Television has acquired adaptation rights to Gillian McAllister’s novel Just Another Missing Person.
After what’s been described as a “highly competitive situation,” British screenwriter Georgia Pritchett will adapt the story for TV. It’s another example of how hot the book-to-tv market is right now, with Heyday’s parent Universal International Studios among the most active in the space.
Heyday founder and Academy Award-nominated producer David Heyman, whose credits include the Harry Potter films, Barbie and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, will executive produce alongside Pritchett, McAllister and Sue Gibbs.
Just Another Missing Person follows Julia, a detective brought in to investigate the high-profile disappearance of a young woman. However, the simple case quickly becomes complicated when a mysterious stranger blackmails Julia into framing a seemingly innocent person for the crime. Julia is forced to choose between getting to the truth of the case,...

Daniel Fienberg The shift to a backloaded schedule built around a May 31 deadline for Emmy consideration has drained some of the surprise from the spring TV calendar. Viewers are growing accustomed to a glut of high-profile limited series and prestige returning shows from March to May, with the biggest titles and stars creating their own gravitational fields of self-perpetuating coverage.
Luckily, though, there’s still room for discovery. With its literary pedigree and a budget that burst off the screen in the form of astonishing evocations of 17th century Japan, FX’s Shogun had “prestige” written all over it. Yet the care taken by creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo to deliver this story without having it reek of appropriation and voyeurism was evident throughout. Still, who would have guessed that Shogun would be so successful that the network would want to push forward with future seasons beyond James Clavell’s novel,...

The first-ever Gotham TV Awards offered a stark contrast between the Gotham Film & Media Institute’s annual celebration of cinema. While both awards shows were founded to toast independent productions — that is, before the Gotham Awards increased their budget cap eligibility requirements in 2023 — the Gotham TV Awards felt like a strangely intimate gathering that was mostly populated by showrunners, network executives, and the Gotham TV Awards jurors, with a few actors and press sprinkled in.
Sure, it could be that it’s the first year for the awards show and thus a smaller turnout and even venue. Or perhaps the Gotham TV Awards will remain a coveted industry event, one that feels like it’s only for insiders.
The intimacy was most prominent during the Anniversary Tribute for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” icon Mariska Hargitay. The award was presented by Hargitay’s former co-star Stephanie March, and...
