Two years ago the Rasmussen brothers, Michael and Shawn, spoke to us about the production of their low-budget horror movie Dark Feed. Filmmaker: How did this project start? Michael: The whole thing came about as we were finishing Dark Feed. An old Carriage House in New England is the setting and principle character in the Rasmussen Brothers' latest indie haunting, The Inhabitants. Michael and Shawn Rasmussen wrote the oft-maligned (yet beautifully rendered) final John Carpenter picture, The Ward, in 2010 and since then they have concerned themselves with blood stained institutions that will not give up their ghosts easily. They took their own directorial stab at the haunted hospital in 2013 with Dark Feed. Here, it is a bed and breakfast inn located in Massachusetts, somewhere in the vicinity of Ipswitch or Danvers, the latter famously known as Salem Village. Indeed, the 'Witch Museum' up the street is the primary tourism attraction of the region, not counting the verdant, foggy atmosphere that offers some of the best production value...

Back at the beginning of 2013, we got the first word on The Inhabitants, Michael and Shawn Rasmussen's follow-up to Dark Feed; and now today the brothers are debuting the film's new sales art plus a pair of production stills.
Written and directed by the Rasmussens, The Inhabitants stars Michael Reed and Elise Couture Stone. They told us that with regard to the film, "We were fortunate enough to shoot in one of the oldest houses in New England as well as parts of Salem, Massachusetts, including The Witch House Museum."
"Built in 1690, the Noyes-Parris House was at one time owned by Samuel Parris, who played a role in the Salem Witch Trials. His daughter and niece were two of the accusers. It was also a stop on the underground railroad and has the hiding places to prove it. The current owner is convinced the house is haunted, and after...

I think I may have been only one of a handful of people in the film-blogging community who expressed deep love for John Carpenter’s psych ward set horror flick The Ward. Well now the brotherly writing duo behind that film – Michael and Shawn Rasmussen – are back with another slice of hospital horror with Dark Feed.
This time round the brothers Rasmussen take on the writing, editing, scripting And directing duties, for this tale that sees a film crew move into an abandoned psychiatric hospital to shoot a low budget horror film. In the final part of our interview with brothers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, they talk about the importance of music and audio, costume design, and how they found a distributor. After writing the script for The Ward, which was directed by John Carpenter, the brothers decided they really wanted to direct their next script themselves. They spent almost a year trying to raise money, but ultimately decided to shoot Dark Feed with a Canon 7D and the resources they had available. Dark Feed was successfully completed and sold to a distributor, and they are now working on their second low-budget feature, …...

Imagine battling bats and being doused in dust and blood on your very first feature film set. So it goes for actress Victoria Nugent on the set of Michael and Shawn Rasmussen’s “Dark Feed.” The film features Andy Rudick as Chris, a screenwriter visiting an abandoned mental hospital, the set of his latest movie. The large majority of the cast and crew have been at it for quite some time, so Chris bonds with another newcomer, Beth (Nugent), who’s joined in to work as a Pa for the day. Directors/writers: Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen. Cast: Evalena Marie, Dayna Cousins, Victoria Nugent, Michael Reed, and Rebecca Whitehurst. The Rasmussen brothers are probably best known for the work with John Carpenter on The Ward. This earlier title was a horror film with a strong psychological element. Carpenter does not direct the Rasmussen's Dark Feed. Instead, these two have taken on the filmmaking responsibilities, themselves. Unfortunately, they should have rehired Carpenter as Dark Feed stumbles through a weak premise, poor pacing, average acting and dimly lit settings. The end result is a 28Dla Worst Indie Film of 2013 nomination. The Rasmussen brothers first feature as directors sticks with the psychiatric hospital from their earlier work. Here, several characters are trying to put together an indie film. It is a film within a film, get it? The production does not go smoothly as murderous spirits move about the setting. A black ooze begins to pour out of.

A few years back a pair of fraternal filmmakers called Shawn and Mike Rasmussen were fortunate enough to have their debut screenplay brought to the screen by John Carpenter. It was called The Ward, and if it doesn't quite compare to Mr. Carpenter's true classics of the horror genre, then at least it was a suitably creepy and well-cast thriller with a few cool twists. I'd be willing to bet that the Rasmussen brothers took every nickel they earned on The Ward and plunked it straight into their directorial debut. It didn't get many festival screenings and it will probably vanish once it hits the massive horror sections of Netflix, iTunes, and Amazon, but the Rasmussen brothers' Dark Feed is actually pretty damn solid.
No, the film doesn't have any actors you've heard of, and yes, Dark Feed has a premise that could easily be described as "basic," "familiar," or even "old hat" by now,...

Last week the directorial debut from Shawn and Michael Rasmussen - Dark Feed - arrived on DVD and VOD courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment, who nabbed distribution for the indie psychological thriller last fall.
Also co-written by the Rasmussen Brothers, Dark Feed follows a film crew shooting a low-budget horror film at an abandoned psychiatric hospital with a shadowy past that seems to be coming back to life, feeding off its new inhabitants. As the shoot wears on, members of the crew exhibit increasingly strange behavior, leaving those unaffected realizing just how quickly the madness is spreading amongst them. The only problem is the hospital they're stuck inside doesn't want them to escape- at any cost.

From the writers that brought you The Ward, comes Dark Feed – a horror / thriller about a film crew making a horror film of their own deep within the frightening confines of an abandoned psychiatric hospital, where they encounter some deep, dark and long buried secrets that start to manifest in horrifying and violent ways.
We’ve all seen the abandoned hospital horror film, whether it be Session 9, Boo or Grave Encounters and while there is no problem with a variation of this idea time and time again, there has to be a satisfying tale for how ever long the filmmakers want your attention and sadly, what this ride lacks is an engaging story that both entertains and frightens.

A curious duo of circumstances characterize the beginning of Dark Feed. On the one hand instead of feeding the audience (and characters) the disturbing history of the hospital bit by bit we see (explained) photographic evidence of the most troubling parts within the first five minutes. Yet the story yawningly drags for the next first forty. In other words the (selfdubbed) Rasmussen Brothers have pulled off the utterly unique feat of combining two seemingly mutually exclusive mistakes setting the tone for an awful film that no horror freak should see.

I still haven’t watched John Carpenter’s The Ward yet so I can’t personally talk about the script. However, if it got Carpenter’s attention, I’m interested to see what other stories the writers can come up with. It looks like we won’t have to wait long to see the end result.

Hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement that Michael and Shawn Rasmussen's Dark Feed had been picked up for distribution, the sinister siblings dropped us a line with the first word on and a bit of teaser art for their next project, The Inhabitants, on which they just wrapped production.
Written and directed by the Rasmussens, The Inhabitants stars Michael Reed and Elise Couture Stone. They told us that with regard to the film, "This one is quite different from Dark Feed. It's more of a throwback to some of our favorite horror films from the 70's. Films like The Changeling, Rosemary's Baby, The Haunting of Julia, and of course The Shining."
We should have additional details soon, and for more in the meantime, be sure to "like" The Inhabitants on Facebook.
