This is a fun show!
linda-reynolds27 June 2022
Readers of the critical reviews, keep in mind; 1 - She didn't EARN the billions, she's a billionaire from her divorce.

2 - She didn't mastermind a financial empire for 20 years - her ex did that.

3 - She spent her time as the WIFE of a billionaire, basking in luxury, going to parties (some via travel on one of their private jets), throwing huge parties, going to a spa, and a life that wasn't "normal" at all.

This series is about the collision between her life before the divorce and her life after, as she tries to find some meaning for her existence. And it's funny.

Give it a chance.

Funny cute

Watched two episodes so far and I'm enjoying the characters and storyline. One of my favorite actors is Nat Faxon and I usually like whatever he's in. I'd say this is kind of a workplace comedy with nice character development.

Pretty good comedy
moniquerich25 June 2022
It's only been 3 episodes and people are giving it bad reviews? I'm suspecting some hate towards the LGBTQ community because one of the actresses is trans.

Besides that, it's a funny show. I can't wait for episode 4! Maya is hilarious, as always, and the music is awesome!

Not very funny, and yet...
fmdead2 August 2022
Love Maya Rudolph, but this script is simply not very funny. Her fish-out-of-water as she attempts to fit in to the "normal" world is too unrealistic - because her character wasn't born rich, she WAS a "normal" person before her husband made his billions. She is supposed to grow and evolve - but she's never actually involved in what her charity does or who it helps. The supporting cast is thinly drawn and there are too many short cuts to Maya bonding with them. Maya's character is over-the-top tone deaf - but at the same time is supposed to be smart, not stupid. The context all feels shallow and formulaic. Having said all that, I do see potential here as the latter half of the series begins to pull in more stories of the cast which are rather sweet and good-hearted. The writers somehow need to pull it out and bring a sharper edge and humor to the endeavor if this series isn't going to be canned.

What were you watching...?
GeorgeTinNYC26 June 2022
I have read a handful if not a bunch of the low ratings and it boils down to 3 things:
  • billionaires wouldn't allow anyone to speak to them that way
  • I don't buy MJ Rodriguez as the head of a non-profit
  • Maya's character is so disconnected from reality it's not believable

Basically criticisms without any real rationale other than narrow experience and thought. It's a great story, and characters I'm looking forward to in development. Yes, Sofia Selina's is a guarded character and the way she talks to the owner of the foundation is a bit off putting at first, but that's what makes it a comedy. It's literally what a majority of us think at work when the higher-ups want in on the day to day without ANY real understanding or consistency. We know they'll be gone in a day, and they've caused more of a raucous being there than actually achieving anything, it's relatable if anything. Secondly it's a story about a woman standing on her own and that takes effort because as she describes she's learning about herself after the last half lifetime of being married. It's a difficult redo, completely relatable (sans billions of dollars) and it's well approached by the writers. I think the criticisms and low rating are entirely based in ignorance, inexperience and again in narrow viewpoints. Parks & Rec was hard to watch the first season, the characters blossomed in the second season and well beyond, as do most characters. I despise people who are ready to trash a series in THREE episodes. But that's a very American way of being.... I am American. So eat it before you say I'm not. This show is funny, and well crafted. I look forward to the season and to these characters growing on me. I especially love the dynamic between Ron Funches & Joel Kim. It's poised to be a great comedy. Why shouldn't people talk to billionaires like this? They're people just like everyone else around them. They may fly to space but they're NOT otherworldly.

Just not quite there.
totallyhot7814 April 2024
Loot is OK, but nothing special. It looks fantastic and has a good cast, but there's something missing. It's never particularly funny, and the characters somehow don't connect like they should do. To be honest, I was quite surprised it got a second season... What I've seen of the latter, hasn't improved things. I was hoping they'd have fixed the issues with the first season, but it's just more of the same really.

At least the episodes are relatively short. That's appreciated in these days of bloated, unnecessarily drawn out series.

But do we need a third season? I would say no. Loot passes the time, but that's about it.

Episode 4 is the turning point
cscott23318 July 2022
OK, normally I don't add a review until the season is over, especially on brand new shows. But I figured it was time to go ahead and drop one to counteract the people who watched one episode and came to say how awful it was! Episode four is the turning point, things start to come together, characters and storylines branch off and, for me, the result was funny! I think it's really heading somewhere and I'll stay with it until the end. They've got some really funny people on the show it just took a minute for them to shine. I mean Maya Rudolph Rob Funches and Nat Faxon are great. I'm enjoying Joel Kim Booster too. So what if one of the lead characters is trans, if you rated low for that, then there's just no hope for you. They don't smash the whole woke BS propaganda, like so many other shows do, down your throat! It's just a trans person in a lead role and she's a good actor so it's fine, geez! Chill out... Sit back and enjoy a little light goofy comedy. Or don't.

Getting better last few episodes...
nickfes-6888719 July 2022
The joke writing is very good. Characters starting to come along. Pretty easy and enjoyable watching. Was wondering where it's going but it is getting better. Turns out there is a pretty good chemistry between the ensemble.

Lazy
adamsandel4 July 2022
Based on the credits of everyone involved, this should have been much better than it is. It feels like they had a great pitch meeting at Apple TV, everyone said, "It'll write itself!" and they all went home and cashed their checks.

The writing is both uninspired and lazy. There are lots of warmed over jokes about how filthy rich the lead character is, which have been done much better elsewhere.

The characters are all paper thin and derivative. Her gay assistant is shallow and bitchy. Groundbreaking. There's a major comic scene where she goes on a show and eats too-hot hot wings - which we have all seen Maya Rudolph do already on SNL. Lazy.

The only bright light is Nat Faxon as a timid accountant / love interest. The show springs to life whenever he's on camera. They seem to be moving towards some character development, but so far? Lazy.

Lighthearted & whimsy
chelashopper11 July 2022
This show makes my heart happy. It's lighthearted and charismatic- as some of the best kind of "Netflix" is. You don't have to think too much, or act as if you're a judge on America's Next Top TV Critic (which thankfully, does not exist). Every few minutes, you're hit with a nice "how can't I laugh at that?" - whether it's dialogue or delivery, even bad acting on occasion. By the end of an episode, I find myself rooting for the characters and the actors portraying them.

I dig where Maya's gone with Loot, regardless if it emulates a "real rich lifestyle" or what a "real rich person" might do. Most people can't relate to that anyhow. Hats off to Maya, AppleTV, and the entire team behind Loot for green lighting. Five episodes in and bottom line, Loot's compassionate, fun, and easy to watch when not taken so seriously or literally. If you're into that, it's worth the watch.

It's fun and easy on the eyes
mmkalmykova14 March 2023
IMHO the reviews on IMDB don't do this show justice. Sure, it's mostly predictable and somewhat cliche characters are present. However, in my books, some amount predictable is not bad, on the contrary - it's what makes a comfort-watch.

The jokes are light-hearted and simple, but created with taste and grace. Many are rooted in pop-culture so you have to be there to understand, some are too on the nose, and the creators clearly know about it, and that's why they are funny.

The story is made with kindness, with heart and nobody tries way too hard or too little, just the right amount of effort behind it.

And the cast is amazing! Maya Rudolf looks like a real live woman and I love her for that. MJ Rodriges - oh, I just fell in love with her, she's so spirited and energetic. All the characters are lovely.

Last but not the least, let me mention the colors, the decorations and the light in the show. It's beautiful and brings up the optimist in me.

Sure, it's no Brooklyn 99, no Office, you can't laugh your bum off and quote "Loot" to your friends and children for years to come. But so what, all of those exist already, don't they?

And this here is a heartfelt funny show to give your eyes and you soul some relaxed time.

Simple Nope
MaskedMinty23 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like I'm a masochist because I knew that I should have stopped as soon as I was in the middle of the first episode. But, I decided to continue to see where this mess was going. Boy what a shallow, uninspired series. I was waiting for it to become better and give some of the promising characters some sort of depth but it just never did it. The actress who plays Sofia is basically just playing her character (Blanca) from Posé. There is the funny black male friend trope, sassy toxic black female partner, the sarcastic gay assistant, the dorky middle aged white accountant and the sexy french guy who ends up being a weirdo. The whole thing is out of touch and tries to make a social commentary and break out of the obvious tropes and clichés but fails to do so and the result at the end of the finale episode leaves a super bad taste in your mouth. Save your time and watch something else, Apple really dropped the ball on this one.

Bezos satire with potential
soprano-1552924 June 2022
I just finished the third episode. I can't understand how people watch TV and ignore both blatant satire and nuance (see other reviews). This show is clearly a wink to Jeff Bezos and his now ex-wife with a comedy spin on it. MacKenzie Scott but as an out of touch semi-moron? Love it. It's light and fun and we all could use that in our life.

I trust Maya, Adam Scott (who always plays such a great a-hole), and Alan Yang will help this show reach its potential. They just need to find their footing with some of the characters.

Apple tries to make another Ted Lasso
I guess Apple is saying if you liked Ted Lasso, then we'll try and make another one. It's tone and form is inspired from Ted Lasso, I guess.

It's about somebody coming from success but suffering an emotional loss (divorce) which pushes them to go do something completely new and something they know nothing about but with the help of one trusty sidekick. A combination of Ted Lasso's team owner and grumpy Veteran footballer form Loot's grumpy manager of Molly's charity foundation. The cast is rounded out with some quirky odd balls with hearts of gold.

It's corny, lite, and enjoyably to watch. A show that makes fun of wealthy you might see on a reality show. Maya's style on comedy makes it all the more fun.

Warning: Spoilers
If you were to sit down and write a script ticking off each stereotype you would get LOOT. A self centred billionaire, his spoiled wife, the young girl he has an affair with, the gay best friend, the boring office guy, the sass talking black man, the uptight manager. And it totally lost me when the cousin called Arthur the boring white cubicle mate, who then apologised for his white supremacy. I don't want an agenda I want a good show. This isn't the one.

Smart, funny and fresh. Builds up.
nicorjrj29 July 2022
Great cast, with huge comedians such as Rudolph, Faxon and Funches. The support cast is also very talented, and looks promising for season 2 (Adam Scott makes some appearances and is hilarious). The storyline allows for very original scenes with a light script and deep subtext, it develops in the background, promising stronger arguments on the main topic of the series for season 2. The lighting and music are perfect. Some Apple TV references could be improved (References to other series from the streaming service).

The Pitfalls of "Loot": A Case Against Watching
sirdubs30 August 2023
In the ever-expanding landscape of television shows, there are gems that captivate audiences with their compelling narratives, well-crafted characters, and thought-provoking themes. Unfortunately, not every show lives up to these standards, and one such example is "Loot." While the allure of a new series might be tempting, a closer examination of "Loot" reveals a range of shortcomings that render it far from worth watching.

1. Lackluster Plot Development: At the core of any successful show is a strong plot that engages viewers from the outset and keeps them invested throughout. "Loot," however, falls short in this crucial aspect. The show's plot is riddled with inconsistencies, pacing issues, and a lack of clear direction. Characters make decisions that seem arbitrary and inexplicable, making it difficult for audiences to connect with their motivations. The narrative lacks the necessary twists and turns that generate anticipation, leaving viewers feeling disinterested and detached.

2. Shallow Characterization: Compelling characters are the heart and soul of any great show. Unfortunately, "Loot" fails to deliver in this department as well. The characters in the show are one-dimensional and lack depth, making it challenging for viewers to form any emotional attachment. Their actions and dialogue often feel forced or contrived, making it difficult to empathize with their experiences. Without relatable or well-developed characters, the show loses a critical element that allows audiences to invest in the story.

3. Poor Dialogue and Writing: Engaging dialogue and strong writing are essential for conveying the essence of characters, advancing the plot, and fostering emotional connections. "Loot" struggles in this regard, presenting viewers with uninspiring dialogue that feels unnatural and unconvincing. Meaningful exchanges between characters, which should serve as moments of emotional resonance, often fall flat due to awkward phrasing and lack of authenticity. As a result, the show fails to create the kind of memorable lines or interactions that are often the hallmark of successful series.

4. Incoherent Tone and Themes: A well-defined tone and thematic framework help guide viewers through the narrative and provide a sense of cohesion. "Loot," unfortunately, suffers from an incoherent tone and muddled themes. It struggles to establish a consistent atmosphere, often veering between genres without a clear sense of purpose. This lack of tonal clarity can leave audiences perplexed, unsure of how they are meant to engage with the story. Additionally, the show introduces various themes but fails to explore them in depth, leaving viewers with a sense of unfulfilled potential.

5. Predictable Plot Twists: A successful show often thrives on its ability to surprise and challenge viewers' expectations. Regrettably, "Loot" falls into the trap of predictable plot twists that undermine its ability to captivate audiences. As the story unfolds, the twists become increasingly foreseeable, robbing the show of the element of suspense that keeps viewers engaged. Without the element of surprise, "Loot" struggles to maintain its hold on its audience.

6. Production Value Shortcomings: While a show's production value doesn't solely determine its quality, it does play a role in shaping the overall viewing experience. "Loot" suffers from noticeable production value shortcomings, from lackluster cinematography to subpar visual effects. These deficiencies can be distracting and make it difficult for viewers to immerse themselves fully in the story. In a competitive television landscape, where audiences are accustomed to high-quality visuals, such production shortcomings can be a significant drawback.

In conclusion, "Loot" presents a disappointing viewing experience that is marred by its lackluster plot development, shallow characterization, poor dialogue and writing, incoherent tone and themes, predictable plot twists, and production value shortcomings. While every show deserves a fair chance, the combination of these factors ultimately renders "Loot" not worth watching. In a world where there are numerous exceptional television options available, viewers are better off investing their time in shows that offer more engaging narratives, well-crafted characters, and a higher level of overall quality.

I think it's FUNNY!!!
simwilde16 July 2022
I'm glad I stumbled upon this. It's made me a bigger fan of Maya Rudolf. It's a feel good comedy. Not ROCKET SCIENCE. If any one with the low reviews doesn't get it, I'm pretty sure it's mocking the BEZOS divorce. Mackenzie is notorious for being EXTREMELY PHILANTHROPIC AFTER HER BILLION DOLLAR DIVORCE FROM JEFF. GET WITH IT!!!!!

Super cute, very watchable
amandaugaste25 March 2023
I'm looking forward to any future seasons. But it's not going to like stick with me forever, and I probably won't go back and rewatch the season at a later point which is why my rating. But I did enjoy it!!

I think each of the characters ends up being pretty likeable. Especially maya rudolphs character - I know it's not supposed to be a super serious drama or anything, but even as a comedy I was hoping she wouldn't be TOOOOO over the top the whole way through, nor be too "down to earth" super fast again. I thought they played it well, and it worked.

The only thing through all the comedy was how angry I was thinking about how people actually HAVE that money and live that way. Which I think is their point too.

High quality production, no doubt. But the story is subterranean. It's a fairytale in a world where rich people are just brainless stupid people. Might be an interesting entertainment for folks, who love to complain about everything in life.

Bad writing, direction, and editing gives talented cast absolutely nothing entertaining or engaging to work with. This show is just the latest in a long string of Apple TV losers that prove that the first season of Ted Lasso was a fluke.

Comedy of the absurd, it's growing on me
ILuvMovieehs19 April 2024
Like several others i really detested this show when I first watched it. The comedy premise - a clueless billionaire divorcée trying to help people thru her vanity charity project was just too close and certainly one of many things wrong with the philanthropy business. Take it from me I work in this field! But then I read over some of the reviews and checked my professional hat at the door, and gave this show another chance. After all it is Maya Rudolph. And though it"s not great comedy, the show is a bit smarter and fun than I initially gave it credit. I am caught up now through season 2 and just appreciate the show for its all of its wonderful quirks like the implausible story, the fantastic cast ensemble, and of course Maya unleashing her amazing comedic talent in the character Molly as the show grows into its own.. Call it a guilty pleasure but I love to watch this show at the end of a particularly tough work day. It makes me laugh! The show entertains precisely because of its over the top characters and outlandish formula for comedy. And for that I am grateful. After all it is only a TV show, not reality. I hope it keeps going!
