Crowe plays an irascible army veteran opposite Liam Hemsworth’s rippling rookie field agent – but stunts overshadow suspense
We’re in the “try anything once” phase of Russell Crowe’s career, and he’s wearing it well. There’s a looseness to his latterday choice of role, with none of the stage-managed strategy of a hungry star with Oscars in their immediate eyeline; he’s done all that. He is in his improvisational free jazz phase, and it has given us Big Russ as a deranged road-rage maniac (Unhinged), the pope’s personal exorcist (The Pope’s Exorcist), and an appearance at WrestleMania 39 in character as said pope’s exorcist – to say nothing of the gigs and music videos. Actor Liam Hemsworth seems to be enjoying Crowe’s current energy too – having worked with him on Poker Face in 2022, he’s now re-teamed with him for Land of Bad, a...

For the second straight summer, the NBCUniversal service will increase its subscription prices.
Since its launch on July 15, 2020, NBCUniversal’s Peacock has slowly, but steadily built itself into a solid streaming service, in part, by keeping its prices low. Over the course of its nearly four years, it has only increased its subscription price once, when it raised its monthly rates $1 and $2 respectively in honor of its third anniversary last July. Now, it appears that NBCU is making something of an annual tradition of the practice as on Monday, the company announced that it would again be raising prices in July.
Key Details: For the second straight July, Peacock is set to increase its prices on both subscription tiers. Over the course of one year, the price for the service’s ad-supported tier will increase from $4.99 to $7.99 and its ad-free option from $9.99 to $13.99. NBCUniversal is looking to wring more money out of Peacock subscribers, with the streamer set to raise prices this summer — one year after its last fee hike — going into effect for new customers ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
Beginning in mid-July, the price for Peacock Premium (with ads) will increase by $2 to $7.99 per month and Peacock Premium Plus (mostly ad-free) is also going up by $2 to $13.99 per month. Peacock Premium’s annual price will increase from $59.99 to $79.99, while Premium Plus is going from $119.99 to $139.99 per year.
The new prices will be effective starting July 18 for new Peacock customers and for existing subscribers with their next billing date on or after Aug. 17.
The Peacock Premium Plus tier provides ad-free content, the ability to download episodes and live local NBC channels. Due to streaming rights, per NBCU, a “small amount of programming” still contains ads on some Peacock channels, events, and a few shows and movies.

He has been circling the role for months with talks currently heating up, we hear. However, no deal has been signed. Production is said to be targeting the start of production for later this year.

The newest ‘Law & Order’ spin-off has seen consistently better ratings on Peacock than on linear NBC to this point.
Eliot Stabler is coming back for at least one more ride. The popular character portrayed for 25 years by actor Christopher Meloni is the star of “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” the latest member of the franchise originated by Dick Wolf. “Organized Crime” was stuck in limbo while waiting to find out if it would be renewed for a fifth season or not, but it appears that NBCUniversal has finally made a decision. A new report from Deadline indicates that “Law & Order: Organized Crime” will move to Peacock for an abbreviated Season 5, and if it’s successful, could return for more episodes.
Key Facts: Season 5 of “Law & Order: Organized Crime” will consist of 10 episodes. The show has consistently performed better on Peacock than it has on linear NBC. Peacock...

The Peabody Board of Jurors released the rest of the 2024 Peabody Awards nominees today and the results were somewhat surprising. Comprising the Arts, Children’s/Youth, Entertainment, Interactive, and Immersive categories, the list of honorees included anticipated programs such as “The Last of Us,” “The Bear” and “Bluey.” What was something of a shock was a snub of the critically acclaimed and awards favorite, “Beef.”
Read More: “20 Days in Mariupol” and “The Eternal Memory” among early 2024 Peabody Awards nominees
Beyond “Last of Us” and “The Bear,” other Entertainment category nominees include “Poker Face,” “Lupin,” “Blue Eyed Samurai,” “Somebody Somewhere,” “Dead Ringers,” “Reservation Dogs,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Israel-Hamas War,” “Reality,” and “Jury Duty.” Surprising nominees included “Fellow Travelers” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
On the Children/Youth front, “Bluey” was joined by fellow Disney+ series “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,” and “Summer Camp Island.

The NBCUniversal streamer continues to make small, but steady climbs in its quest for streaming survival.
Comcast’s flagship streaming service Peacock has been on a slow but steady climb since launching in 2020. While still amongst the smaller platforms from major media companies, it is no longer an easily ignored also-ran, seemingly fighting for scraps as the streaming world threatened to leave it behind. During the same period in 2023, the streamer reported having 22 million paying customers, now that total sits at 34 million.

The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

Just when you thought it was safe, they suck you back in. Yes, on April 14, 2024, the final guild award ceremony was held for programs, films, and content released in 2023. Delayed because of the WGA and SAG strikes, the 2024 WGA Awards were held in concurrent ceremonies in both Los Angeles and New York. And while writers for “The Last of Us,” “Beef,” and “American Fiction” were rewarded as expected, we’re happy to report there were a few upsets.

The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.
Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.
The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.
Later, the Documentary prize went to Errol Morris...

Peacock may be slightly behind some competitors in terms of profitability, but it has a solid plan to get there that stands apart from other streamers.
Content-wise, the past year has been a monumental one for NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock. The platform became the first on-demand streamer to host an exclusive NFL playoff game in January, and original content like the “Five Nights at Freddy's” movie and shows such as “Poker Face” helped make 2023 an important year for the streamer. Financially speaking, Peacock may be a bit behind the competition when it comes to showing a profit, but its plan to achieve that goal is much different than that of industry rivals like Disney+, Max, and Netflix.
Peacock is climbing toward profitability after hitting peak losses in 2023. The streamer launched in 2020 with two ad-supported options, an important driver of average revenue per user. NBCU is determined to build the streamer,...

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series is undergoing a change in leadership.
Variety has learned that Albert Kim, who developed the series and served as showrunner on Season 1, is stepping down. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers going forward. Netflix has already announced the show has been renewed for two more seasons, concluding with Season 3.
Boylan served as co-executive producer on Season 1 of “Last Airbender,” while Raisani was an executive producer, director, and a VFX supervisor. Kim will remain onboard as an executive producer for Seasons 2 and 3. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Kim wanted to explore new opportunities following the multi-year development process on “Last Airbender” and has signed a deal with Disney to work as an executive producer on the “Percy Jackson” series while also developing new projects for that company.

Kim shepherded the show for nearly two and a half years and will remain on the show as an executive producer. He has just signed a deal with Disney to join Percy Jackson and the Olympians as an exec producer after it was renewed for a second season.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is heading into its second season with its third showrunner at the helm.
Showrunner Albert Kim, who replaced creators Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, is also exiting the Netflix live-action series. Co-executive producer Christine Boylan and exec producer Jabbar Raisani — both of whom were hired by Kim — will take over as the drama’s third showrunners for the previously announced second and third seasons.
Sources say Kim’s intention was to lay the foundation for season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender after stepping in for the beloved franchise’s creators. Given the long turnaround time in crafting the series — Netflix ordered it in 2018, the creators left in late 2020 and the show didn’t debut until February 2024 — sources say Kim was ready to move on to new opportunities.
Kim, whose résumé include Sleepy Hollow and Leverage, will remain credited as an exec producer on Avatar: The Last Airbender...

Columbo wouldn’t know what to make of the technicolored outfits sported by amateur snoop Elsbeth Tascioni (played to quirky perfection by Emmy winner Carrie Preston). Yet the iconic TV detective, immortalized by the late Peter Falk and known for his shabby trench coat, would likely recognize a kindred spirit cut from the same metaphorical cloth. Elsbeth, a delightful spinoff built around a memorably offbeat character first introduced as a foil on Robert and Michelle King‘s The Good Wife and The Good Fight, is in good company. Peacock‘s terrific Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, an irreverent drifter with a gift for spotting murderous liars, follows a similar Columbo-like “how-catch-’em” light mystery format. We see the crime and the criminal—typically a well-known actor—before our hero even shows their face. Elsbeth’s madcap wardrobe and sunny sensibility, much like Columbo’s shambling demeanor and Charlie’s scrappy underdog persona,...

Peacock wants to get nostalgic with some of Bravo’s most famous past titles, including ‘The Rachel Zoe Project,’ ‘Million Dollar Listing’ and more.
The 2023 strikes from Hollywood’s biggest actors and writers’ unions were eminently avoidable, but studios chose to play hardball with union reps and force work stoppages. TV networks and streaming services are just now getting their scripted titles back on screens, but Peacock is pulling a move that might make audiences think the strikes are still going! Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen are headed to Peacock.
The duo will star in The Miniature Wife, a romantic dramedy that the NBCUniversal-owned streamer has ordered straight to series.
From creators, showrunners and exec producers Jennifer Ames and Steve Turner (Boardwalk Empire), the series is based on the short story written by Manuel Gonzalez. Miniature Wife is described as “a high-concept marital dramedy examining the power (im)balances between spouses, Lindy (Banks) and Les (Macfadyen), who battle each other for supremacy after a technological accident induces the ultimate relationship crisis.”
Banks (Pitch Perfect) and Macfadyen (Succession) also exec produce alongside Media Res’ Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer.
The series was taken out to streamers earlier this year and ignited a bidding war before landing at Peacock with the sizable straight to series pickup.

Exclusive: Apples Never Fall is off to a strong start on Peacock.
The series debuted on March 14 and, in its first weekend on the platform, it racked up 400M minutes watched, according to Nielsen data.
That’ll place it at No. 5 among streaming originals on the upcoming Nielsen streaming charts. The series is also the No. 3 streaming original drama series in the U.S.
The Nielsen charts won’t be publicly available for another month, so it’ll be quite a while before there’s more details on how it stacked up against competitors’ streaming originals.
Since only four days of viewing were captured in this measurement interval, it’s possible that the series will maintain this spot or even move higher in its first full week of availability. It’s worth noting that all seven episodes were released at once, which usually means a series will fall off the...

"All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town." -- Leo Tolstoy
Two of today's hottest shows -- Tracker and Reacher -- are keeping the tradition of the "traveling stranger" alive and well by providing comfort viewing with a kick.
There has always been room on television for the archetype of the helpful loner traveling from town to town.
In the 1960s, James Garner's Maverick featured a wisecracking cowboy poker player with a heart of gold.
That show's campy cousin, The Wild, Wild West, had two Secret Service agents in tight trousers solving cross-country crimes from a swanky steam engine (the original Airstream?).
In the 1970s, The Incredible Hulk put a contemporary spin on the traveling stranger theme, complete with that decade's anxiety over nuclear power.
The show's hero, Dr. David Banner (Bill Bixby), was not out on...
