The Transformers universe’s about to crank things up—again. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts 2 is in the pipeline, with Paramount eyeing a trilogy that promises to bring even more Beast Wars action. Before you transform and roll out, another movie is thrown into the mix, one that’s not even part of this storyline. We’re talking about Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto’s upcoming Transformers film, which has fans scratching their heads and asking, “Wait, how many Transformers movies are we getting?!”
Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura recently gave a cryptic update on Soto’s untitled project. Spoiler alert: the script is still cooking. Meanwhile, we’ve got the animated prequel Transformers One dropping next year, telling the backstory of how Cybertron fell to the Decepticons. But, back to the sequel at hand—Rise of the Beasts 2. One of the year’s top Oscar contenders enjoyed the year’s top limited-release opening over the weekend.
Neon debuted Sean Baker‘s “Anora” in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, earning more than $540,000 over the three-day frame — good for a per-screen average of more than $90,000 per venue. That’s the largest per-screen average of the year and the best platform debut in 16 months.
“We’re incredibly excited about this weekend’s record-breaking results and the fantastic critical and audience response to Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film ‘Anora.’ Baker is a singular director who truly understands the power of the theatrical experience and how important it is for films to be seen in the theater,” Neon said in a statement. “With Mikey Madison in her unparalleled performance as Anora, and the film’s strong awards potential, there’s no doubt it will continue to...

It wasn’t an exciting weekend overall at the box office, but Sean Baker and his new film “Anora” sparked a fire in limited release with the best platform opening in over a year. Read on for the weekend box office report.
The big release this weekend was Paramount Pictures’ horror sequel “Smile 2,” opening in 3,619 theaters after building up strong reviews with 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. The original “Smile” (2022) was right behind it in terms of reviews, and it opened with $22.6 million, going on to $105.9 million domestic and even more overseas. Because of that huge success, “Smile 2” was expected to do better, but it just barely surpassed the opening of the original.
First, “Smile 2” racked up $2.5 million in Thursday previews, leading to a $9.5 million on Friday, including those previews. It ended up making an estimated $23 million over the three-day weekend, which is only slightly higher than the opening for the first movie.

For theaters still in shock over the historic collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), there’s optimism with the “Smile 2” opening of $23 million and Sean Baker’s strong award contender “Anora” (Neon) becoming the year’s best platform debut. (Baker’s also joining IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit November 2.)
In its third weekend, Todd Phillips’ film grossed under $2.2 million to drop another 69 percent and place sixth. With $56.4 million in, its domestic gross will fall short of $65 million. Bad for the studio and worse for the theaters that counted on another $135 million or so in box office revenue (and accompanying concessions).
With “Smile 2,” Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror success inched slightly ahead of the original’s opening weekend, which went on to gross $90 million. “Smile 2” will have a hard time replicating that, particularly with “Venom: The Last Dance” (Sony) debuting this Friday.

Great indie numbers this weekend as Anora turned out highest per-screen-average of 2024 at $90k on six screens for a $540k gross. We Live In Time, the best platform expansion of the year, grossed $4.2 million on 956 screens in week 2 for a $4.5 million cume. Newcomers Union and The Line fared well on one screen each, as did Goodrich on about 1,000.

“Smile 2” has carved out a decent $23 million in its opening weekend, easily topping the otherwise sleepy North American box office charts.
The R-rated sequel to Paramount creepy psychological thriller “Smile” debuted on par with expectations and even with the original film, which opened to $22.6 million in 2022. That movie, which was commissioned for streaming before pivoting to a theatrical release, became a sleeper hit with $105 million domestically and $217 million globally. The follow-up film also opened overseas with $23 million for a global start of $46 million.
Parker Finn returned to direct “Smile 2,” which cost $28 million. Naomi Scott stars as a pop singer who begins to experience a series of disturbing events as she embarks on tour. It has been well-received by audiences, earning a “B” grade on CinemaScore and improving from the first film’s “B-” mark.

Paramount and Temple Hill are grinning widely.
Their new movie, Smile 2, is winning the domestic box office race with an estimated $23 million after earning $9.4 million on Friday, including more than $2 million in previews. That would put the film’s debut just ahead of the first Smile, a sleeper hit that opened to $22.6 million in late September 2022 on its way to grossing more than $217 million worldwide against a $17 million budget.
Once again written and directed by Parker Finn, the film follows a malevolent spirit that jumps hosts via a diabolical grin, this time infecting a troubled pop star (Naomi Scott) with a ton of trauma to feed on, according to The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of the film. Scott stars opposite Lukas Gage, Rosemarie DeWitt and Miles Gutierrez-Riley. This time the budget was $28 million, which is a modest sum for a major studio.

Well, 2024 just got its new adorable mascot thanks to “The Legend of Ochi.”
The upcoming A24 indie fantasy adventure film teased a creature that looks eerily similar to Grogu Aka Baby Yoda-slash-“Gremlins” character Gizmo as a central figure in the coming-of-age tale.
Writer/director Isaiah Saxon makes his feature debut with “The Legend of Ochi” after helming music videos for Björk, Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, and Kanye West. Saxon is also the co-founder of the animation studio Encyclopedia Pictura.
“The Legend of Ochi” is based on Saxon’s own characters and screenplay. The film tells the story of a young girl (Helena Zengel) who runs away from home and learns to communicate with an elusive animal species known as Ochi, hence the title.
Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and A24 staple star Willem Dafoe round out the cast.

As “Reykjavik,” a look at a critical summit between the U.S. and the Soviet Union that helped determine the fate of the two superpowers, begins shooting in Iceland this week, the drama has brought on Hope Davis, Branka Katic and Aya Cash. They join the Sk Global feature, which has already lined up an impressive ensemble that includes Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan, Jared Harris as Mikhail Gorbachev and J.K. Simmons as Secretary of State George Shultz.
Davis, who appeared on Broadway opposite Daniels in “God of Carnage,” will star as Nancy Reagan. Katic is set to play Raisa Gorbachev, wife of the Soviet leader, and Cash has been tapped to portray a young journalist covering the Reykjavik Summit. Production officially commenced Tuesday on location in Reykjavik, where the cast and crew started filming in and around Höfði House, the actual site of a 1986 meeting that happened as the...

Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” isn’t just a movie, it’s a lot of movie. It’s one of the most enormous cinematic experiences in recent memory. It’s a World War II epic with a stunning sense of scale. It’s an intimate family drama about meaningful relationships in crisis. It’s an intelligent recontextualization of a historical era that’s too often viewed through a single lens. It’s a Dickensian melodrama with outsized yet believable characters. It’s an Irwin Allen-esque disaster film with impeccable visual effects. It’s got great musical numbers. It’s funny. It’ll make you cry. I’ve been to whole film festivals with less cinema than Steve McQueen packs into just two hours.
“Blitz,” which had its world premiere at the London Film Festival, tells a story about a family trying to survive the Nazi bombing raids in the United Kingdom,...

Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer for an intriguing new sci-fi horror love story(?) titled Companion, which stars Jack Quaid (The Boys) and Sophie Thatcher as a not-so happy couple.
The teaser cleverly puts us at ease with the usual romcom set-up, even noting that the movie comes from the studio that brought us The Notebook. We then see a chef preparing a meal for Quaid and Thatcher's characters, who initially seem to be enjoying each other's company.
Things quickly take a dark turn when it's revealed that Thatcher is handcuffed to her chair, and we're then told that "the unhinged creators of Barbarian" were also involved with bringing the film to the screen.
From here, we get some glimpses of sinister goings-on involving the leads (it definitely looks like they're doing their best to kill each other for some reason), but it's still not clear exactly what's happening.

The sci-fi thriller Companion is coming our way from writer/director Drew Hancock and the team behind the 2022 horror hit Barbarian, but even though over a year has passed since the project assembled its cast and went into production, we still know very little about it. It has managed to stay shrouded in secrecy all this time. Which is a good thing, since it won’t be reaching theatres (including IMAX screens) until January 10, 2025… but now, the shroud is starting to be lifted, starting with the release of a teaser trailer. You can watch it in the embed above. The release date gives Companion a one week head-start on Blumhouse Productions and director Leigh Whannell’s reboot of the classic Universal Monsters property Wolf Man.
In addition to the teaser trailer, there’s an official synopsis that doesn’t give away anything about the characters or what they’re up...

The commission’s report is the first of its kind in Spain and was produced by the UK-based consultancy firm Olsberg Spi in collaboration with the Spanish producers union Profilm.

It's strange to think that quite a few networks turned down "Breaking Bad" before it became the gargantuan hit series it did. The show largely defined what is meant by the term "the golden age of TV," providing pre-streaming audiences with a slickly-made premium drama that represents exactly the kind of high-quality entertainment that's often lacking in today's oversaturated media landscape.
What's more, "Breaking Bad" launched or catapulted the careers of several of its actors, most notably Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White/Heisenberg — a chemistry teacher who goes on a meth-dealing odyssey to become a drug kingpin. Cranston has become nothing short of a megastar in the wake of his seminal series, but it wasn't just the former "Malcolm in the Middle" star that received a post-"Breaking Bad" boost. Many of the actors involved with the series have seen their careers take off since the show went off...

James Bond. Benoit Blanc. Joe Bang. These characters have become synonymous with Daniel Craig’s career. Now, Craig adds William Lee, a drug-addicted gay American expat, to that list in Luca Guadagnino’s sexually charged and fantastical love story, “Queer.” The film made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, where Guadagnino and co-star Drew Starkey participated in a post-screening Q&a.
Craig’s sensitive and transformative portrayal of a emotionally fractured man could be his greatest performance yet. It might even land him at the center of the Oscar race for best actor — if the more conservative Academy voters aren’t squeamish about the film’s sexually graphic scenes or put off by its non-traditional narrative.

Scarlett Johansson took on the role of an alien who preys on men in Jonathan Glazer’s 2013 film, Under the Skin. After starring in seductive and superhero roles, Johansson wanted to take a break and act in indie films. While she read several scripts during this time, she sought out Glazer’s script for its high-end concept. Johansson barely had any dialogues in the experimental sci-fi film.

Scarlett Johansson seems to be jumping from one franchise to another these past few years. After leaving her iconic role as the Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she moved on to star in the upcoming Transformers film, and recently, it was announced that the actress would also be starring in a reboot, a fresh story from the Jurassic World series.
The iconic dinosaur franchise has become a classic for many reasons, one of the biggest being its cast and director. With Steven Spielberg heading the series and actors like Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, Chris Pratt, and Sam Neill starring in it, it is not surprising that another A-list star like Johansson would join the ship.

Margot Robbie created a phenomenon last year with her billion-dollar-earning movie Barbie. Today, the actress turned a year older. To commemorate the occasion, we are here with a throwback picture of Margot in an exquisite black ensemble.
With Barbie’s unparalleled success in 2023, despite clashing with Christopher Nolan, Margot became one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's latest high-concept thriller, Trap, which stars Josh Hartnett as a serial killer cornered by the cops while attending a concert with his daughter.
All the brief synopsis tells us is that "a father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event," but thanks to the first teaser, we already know there's a lot more to the premise.
Noticing a large police presence in and around the venue, Hartnett's Cooper persuades a vendor to tell him what's going on, and finds out that the cops have been tipped off that a notorious serial killer known as The Butcher will be attending the concert.
Cooper then goes to the bathroom to check his home security system, and we see that he has a man tied up in a chair screaming for help.

Is it any surprise that Margot Robbie is the talk of Tinseltown? She has become a cinematic chameleon since illuminating screens with an ethereal blend of talent and charm in 2008’s TV series Neighbours. Even in the quirkiness of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, her presence, albeit brief, left an indelible mark.
Last year, she stepped into the iconic plastic shoes of Barbie under Greta Gerwig’s thoughtful direction, playfully showing range and commitment that defied expectations. Robbie—who is gearing up for Kogonada’s forthcoming drama flick, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey— appears to be making significant strides in her career to become more recognized for her talent rather than just being a pretty face.

She’s played a sexually harassed Fox News anchor, a feisty, determined and ill-fated figure skater, a comic book misfit, an aspiring con artist, a wildly ambitious 1920s sexpot, a hardcore Wall Street wife, Queen Elizabeth I – and actress Sharon Tate. Whatever the role calls for, Margot Robbie has risen to the challenge, stealing scenes and hearts and growing into a bonafide movie star while working alongside, and for, some of Hollywood’s finest actors and filmmakers. Born July 2, 1990 in Dalby, Queensland, Australia, Robbie has steadily built her resume’ over the course of 15 years, rising from TV series guest spots to feature starring roles that put her alongside the likes of Christian Bale and Brad Pitt in two movies released in 2022, “Amsterdam” and “Babylon,” respectively. And “Barbie” became one of the biggest movies of 2023.

Scarlett Johansson’s impressive filmography showcases a talent that goes beyond her stunning good looks and toned physique. While the star has been praised for the kind of roles she has chosen, there is no denying the fact that her s*x appeal has played a significant part in her massive popularity.

While these high expectations in Hollywood can naturally put pressure on any actor to maintain their appearance, Johansson faced it pretty intensely when she signed on to be Black Widow in the MCU. Getting into a form-fitting costume to play a swashbuckling superhero was a daunting task that saw the celebrity almost having a meltdown about getting into perfect shape for the role.

Tom Hanks and Robin Wright experience pivotal moments at one very important place in the trailer for Here.
Sony’s TriStar Pictures is set to release director Robert Zemeckis’ drama feature in theaters on Nov. 15. Here tells the story of multiple families over the course of generations, with the entire film taking place in a single location, which becomes the home where Hanks’ and Wright’s characters reside. The trailer shows an early exchange between the characters, along with glimpses at their future ups and downs.
“Time sure does fly, doesn’t it?” Hanks tells Wright in the trailer, leading her to reply, “It sure does.”
Later in the footage, Hanks invites Wright to stay over at his home: “You know, if you like, you could spend the rest of the night here.” She responds, “I could spend the rest of my life here.”
Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly and Michelle Dockery round out the cast.

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have emerged as quite the duo in recent years. The director and actress managed to turn both "The Favourite" and "Poor Things" into rare, original box office hits that also went on to garner some major awards season love. Now, they're back together again with another dark comedy in the form of "Kinds of Kindness," which is rolling out in select theaters next weekend before expanding nationwide in the coming weeks. The question is, can Lanthimos and Stone pull off a hat trick and go three for three?
Disney's Searchlight Pictures is making a couple of wise decisions regarding "Kinds of Kindness." For one, it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to build some buzz, with Jesse Plemons winning Best Actor for his work in the film. That has teed up the ball for a limited release next weekend, with Lanthimos' latest work playing in...

“Nothing lasts forever.” There’s something deeply ironic about that line of dialogue being dropped by Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in only the second Avengers movie from almost 10 years ago. While Johansson’s tenure in the superhero genre is apparently over, with the Oscar-nominated star more recently focusing on films like Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, the MCU is still going strong with the latest whispers about Avengers 5 getting the rumor mills spinning again. Hence one of the reasons Steve Carell and Illumination Entertainment’s new marketing for Despicable Me 4 is so biting.
Carell—who, by the by, was also in Asteroid City—took time to promote not only Despicable Me 4 in a new viral marketing video, but an entire supposed “Mega Minions” shared universe that will outlive us all and see the 22nd century.
“Despicable Me 4 is just the beginning,” Carell promises (warns?) with...
