Freddie Mercury was afraid that their Live Aid performance might be seen as a political statement. Bob Geldof eventually convinced him and the band that there was nothing political about the charity concert.
The first of the two Montreal concerts filmed, on 24 November 1981, happened to be 10 years to the night before Freddie Mercury's death.
Freddie Mercury was skeptical regarding the process of filming the concerts and concerned about how the large 35mm cameras and lights would impact the band's live performance In Montreal. Director Saul Swimmer convinced him the results would be worth the trouble by taking Mercury to see a film on the National Air and Space Museum's IMAX screen in Washington, D.C., one of the earliest permanent IMAX theaters in America.
