In conjuction with the DVD release of John Doe: Vigilante (review) this week, I had a chance to speak with the movie's lead and former Battlestar Galactica star Jamie Bamber.
Over the course of our conversation, we touched on what attracted Bamber to the role, his personal feelings on vigilante justice and we dug pretty deep into one of the scenes late in the film's third act and though it's not much of a spoiler, we get pretty deep into the themes of the movie.
Bamber also shared a few details about his upcoming role in the new supernatural drama "The Messengers" (which premieres tonight) and his new thriller Numb which recently wrapped shooting.

The conundrum of vigilante justice is one that many a movie has dealt with. It's often a staple of superhero tropes but the projects that are particularly affecting which use the themes of vigilante justice are those of real people, rather than superheroes, fighting injustice.
Kelly Dolen's John Doe: Vigilante takes the familiar vigilante tale and throws in a couple of wild cards. While typical vigilante stories feature heroes, or perhaps antiheroes?, who clean up the city in quiet, subdued fashion, the vigilante in Dolen's film seems determined to dole out as much violence as possible, often in public fashion. He's not working under the cover of night. This vigilante wants to send the message that the guilty aren't safe and along the way, this very public figure picks up a handf [Continued ...]...

What do you do when justice isn't being served? In real life, you probably moan and complain and maybe write a letter or go on TV to have your voice heard. In the movies, individuals turn to vigilante justice and in the case of John Doe: Vigilante, that justice takes on a very large and bright spotlight.
Jamie Bamber, best known for his TV work in "Battle Star Galactica" and "Law & Order: UK" stars as the titular John Doe, a guy who decides to take justice into his own hands.
The thriller suffers from a case of bad poster but the movie itself is far better than the terrible artwork suggests and while we'll have more on that later in the week, we wan to give you the chance to see the movie for yourself.

Kriv Stenders. Kill Me Three Times will be released on iTunes and other VoD platforms in the Us on March 26, ahead of the theatrical premiere in around a dozen cities on April 10.
There is no Australian release date yet for the comedy thriller scripted by James McFarland, which stars Simon Pegg as an assassin who encounters a group of increasingly violent locals, together with Alice Braga, Luke Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer and Sullivan Stapleton.
The gap between the Us and Australian release raises the prospect the film will be susceptible to online piracy, which has recently blighted Wyrmwood: Road to the Dead, The Little Death and John Doe: Vigilante.
But producer Tania Chambers tells If, .We are looking forward to as many people as possible seeing our film. We continue to believe that some people understand that piracy doesn't support creative people to get our stories to Aussies and the world.

The December 4 launches of Love is Now, Charlie.s Farm and Turkey Shoot are yet another illustration of the utter futility of releasing Australian films on a handful of screens with minimal marketing support.
That trio adds to the list of the casualties which have resulted in Australian films. share of the national box-office this year falling to 2.07%, well short of 2013.s 3.5% and the 10-year average of 3.8%.
Through last Sunday 37 local features and documentaries released this year, plus around 20 titles that carried over from 2013 or earlier years, had generated $20.4 million.
The nationwide year-to-date gross is $1.008 billion so the 2014 total won't reach last year.s $1.099 billion. The local films. market share will get a late boost from Russell Crowe.s The Water Diviner, which opens on Boxing Day, but is destined to be the lowest since 2004.s 1.3%.

Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman were terrific as a long-married couple who overcame adversity in The Railway Man but Australian audiences aren.t buying their latest on-screen pairing.
Before I Go to Sleep casts Kidman as a 40-year-old woman who wakes up every day with a blank memory. Firth is her husband who tells her they.ve been married for 14 years and Mark Strong is her neuro-psychologist who encourages her to keep a daily video diary so she can help rebuild her life.
The thriller directed by Rowan Joffe, adapted from S. J. Watson.s best-selling novel, may not have sent audiences to sleep but relatively few bothered to turn up as the film fetched $418,000 on a very wide 194 screens.
Nationwide takings dropped by 16% to $9.7 million as none of the other newcomers much enthused cinemagoers, according to Rentrak.s weekend estimates. Distributors say the market is soft and especially shallow below the top three titles.

After platforming at four cinemas in New York and Los Angeles John Curran.s Tracks expanded to 28 screens in the Us last weekend.
The 3-day gross was $US70,951 for a per-screen average of $2,534, bringing the 10-day cume to $103,098.
That.s not a great result for the Weinstein Co., which originally intended to launch the Outback adventure starring Mia Wasikowska as .camel girl. Robyn Davidson in May.

Seven Australian films have been released in Us cinemas this year, of which only The Railway Man is likely to have recouped the Pa& and turned a profit.

At least 17 Australian films look set to be released theatrically in the Us this year following the latest batch of deals announced in Cannes. If that's how it pans out, that will be an all-time record, or the highest in the last few decades. The previous high point was 1997 when 15 features were distributed in the Us, according to Screen Australia, whose records go back to 1985.
The preponderance of VOD-targeted deals with limited theatrical play-off partly explains the upswing this year. Only five Australian features got theatrical exposure in the Us in 2012 and seven in 2011, according to Screen Australia's research.
Main Street Films bought Tim Winton.s The Turning, A24 picked up Julius Avery.s crime thriller Son of a Gun and XLrator Media collared Tony Mahony and Angus Sampson.s dark comedy The Mule. Murali Thuralli.s post-Apocalyptic drama One will also be released in the Us by Main...

The line between delivering justice and committing a criminal act can be a thin one in the eyes on the law, and tenuous bond between the two is the focus of the upcoming crime thriller "John Doe: Vigilante." Starring Jamie Bamber, Lachy Hulme, Gary Abrahams, Sam Parsonson and more, and directed by Kelly Dolen, the film follows the titular John Doe who, tired of a system that is unable to deal with violent crimes, takes matters into his own hands, becomes a media sensation and inspires others to do the same in copycat acts. But the question remains: is he a hero or villain? And this exclusive clip we see John Doe attempting to rationalize his violent acts. "John Doe: Vigilante" opens on Friday, March 21st. Watch below.

Main Street Films’ suspense thriller John Doe: Vigilante opens on March 21, 2014 in select cities. The controversial film addresses the themes of justice, vengeance and a failing legal system and begs the question, “is violence ever justified?” The film stars Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica) as a man who takes the law into his own hands after becoming frustrated with a failing legal system. During test screenings the film received positive reviews with one audience member calling it, “riveting and very compelling.” Additionally, Bamber has spoken out about the film’s controversial subject matter calling it a “social commentary about what’s right and wrong.”
“When 67% of former prisoners are rearrested within three years of their release you know there’s something wrong with the legal system,” said Kelly Dolen, director. “John Doe: Vigilante is intended to create a debate and put a mirror up to society. We aren’t glamorizing violence,...

Set to start shooting in May is John Doe, a new Australian feature film that its Executive Producer, Rob Woodburn, describes as "Seven meets District 9." Influenced by such distinct and powerful films, John Doe documents the actions of an often misunderstood anti-hero as he attempts to rid his community of criminals while striking out at those he knows are about to commit crimes. The idea behind John Doe was conceived by its director, Kelly Dolen (The Gates of Hell), who wrote the first draft of the script 15 years ago. Woodburn says that the story "really came to life" when screenwriter Stephen Coates came on board to help pen the story that Dolen had been carrying with him for so long.
