Scream (2022) and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera may have been fired from Scream 7, but she is in Universal Pictures’ upcoming “Dracula’s Daughter” film Abigail, which was directed by her Scream directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and is set to reach theatres on April 19th. Even beyond that film, Barrera told The Hollywood Reporter that she has no intention of leaving the horror genre behind.
Barrera, who has also starred in a horror movie called Bed Rest, said, “I don’t think I’ll be able to get away from horror, and I also don’t want to. I love the genre so much. It’s so much fun to make. Also, I think a genre that people show up to the theaters for no matter what. No stars have to be in the movie for people to show up. Melissa Barrera is firmly establishing herself as a modern scream queen. Not only has she played Samantha Carpenter in both Scream (2022) and Scream VI, but she has also starred in the supernatural horror movie Bed Rest and the survival thriller Keep Breathing, and coming up she has the “erotic nightmare” The One and the Radio Silence project formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter. She also recently finished working on a project called Your Monster, which she describes as a “horror rom-com musical”.
The feature directorial debut of Caroline Lindy, who wrote the film based on her 2019 short of the same name, Your Monster centers on an aspiring actress Laura Franco, whose life falls apart after a cancer diagnosis and devastating breakup. HanWay Films has boarded The One, an erotic thriller starring Melissa Barrera and Nicholas Hoult and will launch sales at the Cannes Film Festival.
The project comes from writer-director team Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley and is billed as “a nightmarish horror about the romantic and psychological warfare waged by our beloved popular entertainment — and also begs the question… are we, the viewers, complicit?”
Barrera, who’s coming off box office horror hit Scream VI, leads the cast opposite the Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated Hoult. Barrera plays Taylor, whose last-ditch effort to find love by becoming a contestant on a reality dating show begins to feel terrifyingly real as she becomes a finalist. Amidst an opulent beachfront setting, fairy-tale dates and champagne, “pursuit turns into obsession and rivalry turns into treachery as reality itself blurs.”
HanWay Films is handling worldwide sales, with WME Independent and UTA co-repping the film for North America.

Content warning: The following story contains text descriptions of pregnancy loss.
We live in a world that doesn't believe women when we say we're experiencing pain - whether it's chronic physical pain or psychological distress. The patriarchal powers that be have always dismissed us, so much so that it has seeped into our healthcare systems. The issue goes way beyond not being believed: the pain gap has deadly consequences, and America is contending with a maternal healthcare crisis worse than in any other developed country.
And while our culture is finally acknowledging this reality, the stigma around these issues is still very real - perhaps most glaringly when it comes to pregnancy loss. Our culture still does not openly discuss the grief and severe psychological impacts miscarriages and stillbirths can have on women. In writer and director Lori Evans Taylor's new supernatural thriller, "Bed Rest," released on Tubi on Dec.

The survival adventure, Keep Breathing, on Netflix brings out mixed reactions. It weaves too many ideas, some breathtakingly polished while others are visibly undeveloped, leaving the viewers split up over its quality. The 6-part limited series features Mellissa Barrera as Liv, ostensibly fleeing from personal issues to Inuvik. While it has its strengths, it draws criticism for casting Barrera in rather basic ways. It’s not the first time Netflix has been on the receiving end for being too simplistic and shallow in some of its production. Barrera has achieved significant milestones in the last decade, rising through reality TV ranks

San Francisco, Oct 24 (Ians) British filmmaker Emmeline Hartley has slammed Chinese short-form video app TikTok for allowing abusive comments in a video.
The comment section of the video about sexual consent was filled with allegations from men accusing women of assault.
According to a report by BBC, the two-minute video was uploaded from an account with about 1,700 followers, that has been viewed more than 1.2 million times.
The filmmaker said that “she believes TikTok’s algorithms are driving more hate towards the film.”
Meanwhile, TikTok said, “misogyny was prohibited on the platform”.
“Our community guidelines specifically call it out as a hateful ideology and we are crystal clear that we do not want that content on our platform,” a spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report.
The company said it had removed more than 100 comments from Hartley’s video, which was a small proportion of the number that had been left.

Netflix has taken peak TV to a new peak.
In a data point sure to fuel more quantity-versus-quality debate, Netflix broke its own record for number of original episodes released in a single quarter — with 1,026 in the third quarter of 2022, according to a tally by Wall Street firm MoffettNathanson.
That’s more than five times any other streaming rival: Amazon Prime Video and Hulu released 223 and 194 episodes, respectively, and Disney+ debuted 140 original episodes, per the report. The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman got off to a solid start on Netflix.

With five titles surpassing 1 billion minutes of streaming, the week of August 1-7 found a familiar champion on the Nielsen streaming chart: Stranger Things.
The Netflix mainstay declined 22 from the prior week but still racked up 1.42 billion minutes of streaming, enabling it to hold off the competition. It is the eighth weekly win of 2022 for the series.
Pixar’s Toy Story prequel Lightyear gathered up 1.3 billion minutes in its first week on Disney+, good for third place. About 36 of the audience for the film, which has mustered only 226 million at the worldwide box office, ages of 2-11, and 23 were 18-34. At 27, Lightyear’s audience had the third-highest concentration of Hispanic homes on the this week’s chart, behind Netflix’s Cocomelon and HBO Max’s Friends.
Netflix romantic drama series Virgin River, which fell 42 from the previous frame, ended its two-week stay at No. 1 but its 1.38 billion streaming minutes secured it a No.

Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” broke into Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings during the week of July 25- July 31, landing in the No. 10 spot among streaming originals.
“Only Murders” entered the original streaming programs chart during the week that its sixth episode of Season 2, “Performance Review,” dropped.
The comedy, which at that time consisted of 16 available episodes in total across its first and second seasons, was viewed for 391 million minutes between July 25 and July 31. That gave “Only Murders in the Bulding” the No. 10 spot among streaming originals , which it took by knocking Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys.”

Virgin River logged a second week as the most-streamed title in the U.S., according to Nielsen, and Stranger Things and The Gray Man also repeated in second and third place, respectively.
The entire Top 10 for July 25-31 was comprised of Netflix films and series, which used to be a weekly pattern but has become more rare. Because of the delay built into Nielsen’s reporting process, streaming numbers for House of the Dragon on HBO Max will not be out for another three weeks, but that title is one of a few in August likely to disrupt the all-Netflix nature of the chart.
Viewership for Virgin River, which just added a fourth season, fell just 9 from the prior week to come just shy of 2.4 billion minutes of streaming. Stranger Things, most of whose fourth season premiered in May, slipped 19, while Russo Bros. spy action movie The Gray Man declined...

Extraordinary Attorney Woo did not take the world by storm the way Squid Game did last year. The latest hit from Korea instead took the scenic route toward success by gradually building its popularity via word of mouth. Extraordinary Attorney Woo — a legal take on The Good Doctor (which also originated in Korea) with a female lead — has been growing every week, from 24M hours viewed in Week 1 to a new high mark of 67M hours viewed in its sixth week (8/8-8/14). This may be the first Netflix series to increase viewing in each of its first six weeks.

“The Batman” actor Andy Serkis is set to showrun and direct “Madame!,” an epic period series about the life of Marie Tussaud, the visionary French artist known for her wax sculptures and the world-famous museum Madame Tussauds.
Newen Connect, the distribution arm of TF1 Group-owned Newen Studios, has signed a deal with Imaginarium Productions, the company founded by Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish, to co-develop and distribute the series which Serkis created. Cavendish will produce alongside Marie Guillaumond at Felicita Films.
The compelling series will shed light on this ruthless yet pioneering business woman who built her business, starting in 18th century Paris, during the age of enlightenment, the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, before travelling to England.
“This is no straight up period drama, it is a hilariously crazy, no holds barred, anarchic, punk caper conjured from the curiously twisted mind of a fabulously post-truth executioner’s daughter!

Photo: ‘Keep Breathing' ‘Keep Breathing,’ at its core is a drama genre series with dramatic survivalist elements. The main story of the film unfolds through flashbacks which serve as the primary method through which the series develops the protagonist’s character. The show uses the setting of the disaster, a plane crash that leaves the heroine of the series stranded in a remote region of Canada, as a catalyst for telling the story of Liv’s (Melissa Barrera) past. While this series intends to tell the story of Liv’s lone survival in this remote forested area, it uses the problems and difficulties of her past as a method for portraying Liv’s strength. Now that 28 days have passed since the premiere of “Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 2, it’s official: the season did not break the record of “Squid Game” to become Netflix’s most popular season of television ever.
The streamer calculates this statistic based on hours viewed during a title’s first 28 days of availability. In the case of the segmented release of “Stranger Things” Season 4, Volume 1’s viewership in the 28 days after its debut was combined with Volume 2’s viewership viewership after 28 days — meaning that viewership of Volume 1 during Volume 2’s eligible window did not contribute towards the final count.
Ultimately, “Stranger Things” Season 4 ended its run with 1.4 billion hours viewed, compared to “Squid Game’s” 1.7 billion. Important to note is the running time of both seasons: “Squid Game” is approximately 8 hours long in total, while “Stranger Things” Season 4 is approximately 13 hours long, but the 5-hour advantage of the Duffer brothers...

Tel Aviv-based Ananey Studios, part of Paramount Global, has signed a deal with Indian content producer Abundantia Entertainment to develop an Indian remake of the hit Israeli live-action teen drama, “The Hood” (“Schuna”).
The original series, created by Giora Chamizer (Netflix’s “Greenhouse Academy”), is set in The Hood, a dingy cluster of low-income housing, where blue-collar families live, located in the middle of one of the richest districts. Kids in The Hood regularly prank the rich community’s snobbish teens, while the mayor constantly tries to get rid of the The Hood altogether. “The Hood” has had three hit seasons (150 x 22′) on Nickelodeon in Israel and was also sold to Portugal’s free-to-air channel RTP2.
“The Hood” adaptation will be produced under Abundantia’s young-adult focused label Filters, which joins Psych that specializes in horror and paranormal. Also being produced under the Filter label are the Indian adaptation of...

Nervous flier? Please don't watch Melissa Barrera's new Netflix series on a plane, she warns. The actor - who most will recognize from her turn as a Washington Heights resident with Donatella Versace-sized goals in the 2021 movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical "In the Heights" - hasn't been scared away from the skies since filming her survival drama "Keep Breathing," though.
"I wasn't nervous at all even shooting [the show's plane crash scenes]," Barrera, 32, tells Popsugar as the show begins streaming on July 28. "We were on the sound stage, it was greenscreen. We were on a rig that felt like a Disneyland ride, one of those cars that moves and stuff like that. So it was actually very fun for me."
The scenes that followed, Barrera says, were the most physically daunting. See, in "Keep Breathing," the small plane crash that strands Barrera's high-powered lawyer character, Liv,...

Melissa Barrera braves the elements in Keep Breathing, a gripping tale of survival coming to Netflix July 28. The In the Heights star shows herself in a brand new light in the rugged six-episode story, most of which she acted in alone. In Keep Breathing, Barrera plays New York lawyer Liv, a workaholic who doesn’t let anyone in. After her private plane crashes in the remote Canadian frontier, she finds herself as the lone survivor. Liv must battle both an unforgiving wilderness and past personal demons to stay alive in the survival thriller. Barrera had her work cut out for her in this show. As if plunging into freezing cold water and exerting her body to the point of exhaustion weren’t daunting enough, she had to deliver a compelling emotional performance to boot. Here, Barrera breaks down the work put into Keep Breathing and why ...

For TV critics, this week’s theme is less-buzzy new versions of some of the buzziest shows of the past year. It will be a fun game to see how many reviews discuss Peacock’s The Resort without mentioning HBO’s The White Lotus in the first paragraph (when the more apt comparison is actually Apple TV+’s Acapulco) or Amazon’s Paper Girls without mentioning Netflix’s Stranger Things (when the more apt comparison is actually Netflix’s The Baby-Sitters Club).
The answer may be close to “zero.” (I won’t even try when it comes to Paper Girls.)
I have at least successfully avoided mentioning Showtime’s Yellowjackets until several sentences into my review of Netflix’s Keep Breathing, a so-called limited series that is unquestionably most easily described as a one-woman version of Yellowjackets without any of the sensationalistic — or “fun,...

There's no doubt that consumers of entertainment have a thing about plane crashes.
The idea that one minute, you're on a journey of a lifetime to the next, scrambling to survive, makes for excellent drama and character introspection.
Keep Breathing hopes to combine a survival drama with the introspection that comes when your life almost passes you by in the blink of an eye.
In the vein of Tom Hanks' Castaway comes Keep Breathing, the story of Liv (Melissa Barrera), a woman who pursues her career at the expense of everything else in her life.
Liv's fateful day arrives as she's leading one of the most important projects of her life.
She rallies her team with a determined bark. Nobody will stop until they've got what they need.
She puts her words into action when her infirmed father falls ill and is hospitalized. Although she's urged to take the time to visit him,...
