'Sally in the Alley' is a departure from the typical "Southland" in that it's all detectives and no patrolmen. This doesn't happen often (ever again?) and for that I'm actually relieved. The balance between uniform and plain-clothes is part of what sets this show apart. For one thing, the absence of Cooper and Sherman is striking, but it also means we're left with the cookie-cutter cop show material (waiting on lab results, pivotal plot points coming in via last-minute phone call, you get the idea).
That said, the writers keep these clichés to a minimum and succeed in showing that the investigative side of things can be just as grueling.
7/10
