Easily the most mellow of the films of Sam Peckinpah, this relatively gentle western fable sees Jason Robards discovering water where it ain’t, and establishing his private little way station paradise, complete with lover Stella Stevens and eccentric preacher David Warner. Some of the slapstick is sticky but the sexist bawdy humor is too cute to offend . . . and Peckinpah-phobes will be surprised to learn that the movie is in part a musical.

Veteran’s Day is November 11. While we all try to escape from the most exasperating Presidential Campaign in our history let me pay tribute to the Men and Women who have served in the military to insure we keep our electoral process and our freedoms.
Having served in the Navy four years (there he goes again!) I have a keen interest in any movie about the military, especially the sea service. I did serve during peace time so had no experience with combat but still spent most of my tour of duty at sea on an aircraft carrier, the USS Amerca CV66. Among other jobs I ran the ship’s television station for almost two years. Movies have always been important to me and so providing a few hours of entertainment every day when we were at sea was just about the best job I could have had.

The ability to stand still every so often works wonders for a thriller. Quiet moments don’t just offer a slip road away from the roaring influx of revelation, they allow tension to build and realisations to gradually dawn. Characters are given a chance to breathe uninterrupted by the noise of plot.

Among all the explosions and chases, the Transformers franchise is one of the weirdest in Hollywood. Ryan takes a closer look...

See related Doctor Who series 10: Utopia and Class director comes aboard Doctor Who Christmas special: brief snippets appear in BBC Christmas advert Doctor Who: looking back at Chris Chibnall's episodes
The rumours sounded crazy, but it now seems they were true. You may have read the stories from earlier this year - the forthcoming Transformers: The Last Knight will take in elements of Arthurian legend, including Excalibur, horses, dragons and wizards in pointy hats. That’s pretty outlandish stuff, even for a franchise which is about alien robots from space who specialise in punching each other and disguising themselves as vehicles and household objects.

You may have recently heard: How to Get Away With Murder – the third prong in ABC’s new “#Tgit” triple play from the Shondaland production house — was not created by Shonda Rhimes.
Rather, Murder is the brainchild of Shondaland vet Pete Nowalk, a non-angry white man who has penned scripts and produced for both Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. As such, the freshman drama — premiering Thursday at 10/9c, after the Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal season openers — marks the shingle’s first non-Shonda creation to score a time slot since Jenna Bans’ Off the Map.

In cinemas now, Cheap Thrills and The Sacrament find horror in unusual topics. Ryan compares and contrasts two daring genre films...

Nb: The following contains mild spoilers for The Sacrament and Cheap Thrills.
Horror films are like a mischievous child with a wooden stick: they prod and probe at our subconscious, searching for the sensitive spots that make us jump or recoil in fear and disgust. Yet while the horror genre's main purpose is to reflect our phobias and anxieties, it can also, on occasion, say something wider about society or human nature.
By a strange cosmic coincidence, the 6th June saw the release of two wildly different horror films which both attempt to do something more than chill our bones: El Katz's blackly comic Cheap Thrills, and Ti West's faux documentary The Sacrament. The first delves into such themes as class, poverty and reality TV, while the second touches on belief,...

The anticipation leading up to Supernatural: Bloodlines was undeniable. With the mothership show heading into its tenth season next year, the idea that a new era could be on the horizon was an exciting prospect for fans of the fleshed-out world of Supernatural.
So how’d this backdoor pilot fare? If I’m being honest, the episode was very much not a normal episode of the show we watch every week together. (SPNBFFs4EVER…or something less awkward.)
