Principal photography has commenced on Netflix original drama-comedy film “Kathal” (Jackfruit) from Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms and Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment.
The woman-led film starring Sanya Malhotra and Anant Joshi (“Cobalt Blue”) is set in a small town and revolves around a local politician whose prized jackfruits go missing and a young police officer who is adamant to solve this bizarre case to prove herself. “Kathal” marks the directorial debut of Yashowardhan Mishra, who previously directed several shorts and Amazon Prime Video comedy special “Pata Nahi Par Bolna Hai.”
Mishra co-wrote the script with revered writer Ashok Mishra, who won India’s National Film Award for best screenplay for Shyam Benegal’s “Samar,” and whose credits also include Benegal’s “Bharat Ek Khoj,” “Welcome to Sajjanpur” and “Well Done Abba!,” Saeed Akhtar Mirza’s “Naseem” and Jagmohan Mundhra’s “Bawandar.”

Thanks to their unconventional content, three movies from completely different genres have got audiences and critics talking despite this being a dull season at the box office due to the Indian Premier League (Ipl) and board exams.'Love Sex Aur Dhokha' (LSD), 'Well Done Abba' and 'Tum Milo Toh Sahi' have managed to stand out.'People are talking about these movies. Box office is a different thing. Commercially, only LSD has done well, but the content of all the three movies has been talked about,' trade analyst Taran Adarsh told Ians.'The makers of all these movies had the courage to be different and say a different story. At the end of the day everything boils down to content and a good story at the box office,' he added.During this dull period with no big budget outings, a slew of gap-fillers were released and among them these three movies garnered positive reactions.

Minissha Lamba may have seen good appreciation coming her way for Well Done Abba and also carried a nice pay check back home. However, it's the loss of Rs. 500 that she regrets most while working on the film. Reason being that this amount had a certain prestige attached to it and for Minissha, it was an opportunity of the life time to be bestowed with this honour. So what transpired actually? "Well, Shyam (Benegal) Sir has a standing rule in every film of his that whoever...

Last Friday saw the release of Shyam Benegal's much awaited Well Done Abba in India and as we had already predicted in one of our columns (Well Done Abba: Boman's 'double' triumph after 3 Idiots), it was a Boman Irani show all the way. Just like 3 Idiots, the audience as well the critics are elated with Boman's award worthy performance in this Shyam Benegal directed film. Some have even gone to the extent of proposing the highest honour for Boman, a National Award for his excel...

Drawn from the innermost recesses of its extraordinarily versatile, profound and prolific creator's mind, somewhat like the water that emerges from Boman Irani's well at the end of this delicately-drawn satire on babu-giri and redtapism, Well Done Abba is a little sparkling gem of a film.
Its humour, warmth and tenderness are not as easily obtainable as in Benegal's last comedy Welcome To Sajjanpur, which was far more readily and immediately engaging.
Well Done Abba takes longer to settle and sink into our satiated sensibilities. Long parts of the film describing the Hyderabadi protagonist Armaan Ali's (Boman Irani) close encounters with babu-giri and the bewildering maze of the bureaucracy (somewhat like Pankaj Kapoor in the serial Office Office) are done with a sense of insouciant indulgence that takes the bite away from the cruelty of watching a man run from one musty office to another, trying to get a...

Minissha Lamba looked and felt like a princess promenading for designer Ranna Gll on the final day of Wills Lifestyle International Fashion Show. “Those 40 seconds on the ramp made me feel like a princess,” she said. Minissha looked supremely confident in a showstopping brown chiffon gown but this hid the way she felt inside. "Every time I'm here, I just pray that I can walk on the ramp in a straight line,” she explained, “I tell myself don't look left or right, walk slowly, maintain a pace, your clothes might get caught in your shoes, you might flip. It's nerve wracking and I give kudos to the models who do it and for the way they do it."

Whatever the kind of reviews his latest film is drawing, this filmmaker is a true magician! Owing to his articulate and charismatic personality, time spent with Shyam Benegal can be quite an insight on cinema itself. As he sits in his office browsing through the reviews of his film, he looks a bit concerned. He asks me if there was enough audience in the theatre where I caught Well Done Abba and then almost speaks to himself- “I have been getting good reviews, but it should show on the box office too.”
When asked about where he derived the story idea from, he begins- “It is very simply a story about a stolen well. The idea that a well can be stolen appeared very fascinating to me. I came to it via Jayant Kriplani’s screenplay ‘Stillwaters’ and discovered that it was originally a story ‘Narsaiyaan Ki Bawdi’ penned by...

Well Done Abba
Well Done Abba has turned out to be a sort of a tragedy. Yes, it’s a satirical take on our system, more particularly how government schemes actually become cash cows for corrupt officials while the targeted beneficiaries – the common man – remain as poorly off as ever. It even raises occasional laughs, if not guffaws, through its ironic representation of all the loopholes in the system that are exploited to the hilt by those who are part of it. The victim being, the common man, in this case Armaan Ali of Chikkatpally near Hyderabad, who ekes out a living by driving the luxurious car of a well-off businessman in Mumbai and has a perky daughter back home to look after. With a gamut of characters that reflect the rot in the system in the backdrop of the growing lack of access to water across the nation, Well Done Abba,...

The sensitive manner in which the relationship between a father Boman Irani and a daughter Minissha Lamba has been portrayed in Well Done Abba is one of the few instances of projecting the relationship on the silver screen. Incidentally, while Hindi cinema has been rather benevolent to etch this relationship between a young daughter and a father, it has rather been conservative to portray this relationship at the adult level. Whenever it has been done in the adult stage, as it used to be the case in old films, it was the case of an old indulgent father impervious to the concerns of a mother and turning blind eye to daughter's prank. A brand ambassador of this role was Nasir Hussain....
