Where's the water going'?
robrosenberger3 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Mysteriously-disappearing water reserves cause crew tension, and require a dangerous away mission on an ice planet. On the ship, a coalescing alien particle cloud that seems friendly, becomes deadly when aggravated. What is setting this series apart from virtually all sci fi that's come before is ambiguous dissonance. Most TV sci fi characters fit neatly into the ol' "good" and "bad" files, but here...one moment, you're rooting for Eli as a youthful voice of idealism and humility, the next you're angry at him for losing his composure. One minute you're thinking Dr. Rush is an egomaniacal sociopath, the next you're lauding his brilliant, clear thinking. A more honest portrayal of life, i daresay. Another effort that pushes up against four-star greatness...so close.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was just ok. I have some petty gripes. If the ancients are so smart why do they design a ship that stores all of its water in just one large tank instead of a few smaller ones? They would have to know that in space the ship could be damaged and if that damage ruptures the tank then they would lose all their water. So The Destiny has a major design flaw. There's also the issue of the alien. Why does it take people so long to put two and two together? They're suddenly losing a lot of water and there's a mysterious sand creature roaming the ship. It's a little lame that this creature, that is made of almost nothing, is somehow able to consume so much water and there's no explanation of how this is possible. And if the creature can be contained then how easy should it be to block access to the opening of the water storage tank?

LEARN BASIC PHYSICS!
wildernessbarbie5 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So a character gets wedged down a crevasse and is going to die.

First- Went to ice planet with no ice ax type tool of any kind-??? OK, maybe they didn't have/couldn't make one in time.

Second- Decide not to use plasma torch because he MIGHT cut a hole in his suit... but is going to be left behind because time is running out and he ALREADY has a hole in his suit! What has he got to lose, except his life at this point of course.

Third- Character top side struggles to pull him up by just pulling straight on thin rope, no knots, loops, or leverage. So limited greatly by his hand strength and traction on ice. Seriously?!!? Guess he hasn't done THAT a dozen times before.

For a show in the sci-fi genre, ignoring some basic fundamentals of physics is really annoying and makes smart characters look dumb.

Oh, and the typical American Cowboy/Colonizer approach of attempting to kill everything strange, especially when EXPLICITLY ordered NOT to (but it was by a female CO so apparently that doesn't count) is a trope we need to see a lot less of.
