a moving portrait of the human condition
slowboatmo10 October 2021
Contrary to a lot of slow-paced arthouse films that squarely focus on the task of art for art's sake, Three Sisters is an accessible, humane film whose story feels like one of our own. Each of the three female protagonists follows a divergent path in life, yet find themselves in the same daily struggles against the heavy burden of living in the world, from dysfunctional families to spiritual crisis and personal illness. The genuineness of the portrait of their lives is what gives the film its strength and artistic quality, because it is often the most intimate and ordinary details of human life that resonate with us and move us deeply. And it is in those small vignettes of the downtrodden life of ordinary individuals, as one of the sisters, afflicted with the pain of cancer and poverty, quietly endures the suffering of life and tries to live with dignity, that we encounter the essence of our human condition. Arguably, that is the also the essence of an art movie.

The effect of alcoholism and abuse on a family
phd_travel20 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Three sisters and a brother are damaged goods because the father was an abusive alcoholic pastor. Each sister shows the effects in a different way, low self esteem, denial and religious fanaticism, alcoholic out of control behavior and finally mental breakdown. The actresses all do a fine job and the realism of their problems and the effect on their marriages and families is quite clearly portrayed. Things feel a little overwrought towards the end. CLOY fans will recognize one of the sisters who gives a good performance.

Hurt people hurt people

Very deep research about PTSD and how it shapes people's different personalities.

A little bit dramatic but very relevant characters.

The eldest, Extremely passive one who she thinks she shouldn't be exist on earth because of her birth history that no one welcomed her home.

The second, Passive aggressive one who she hates conflicts actually because of her inner conflicts that she thinks she's never enough Aggressive one who can't stand sugarcoating anymore and want to be authentic but the world is too tough for her for her insecurities.

A realistic message which is hurt people hurt people.
