I cackled out loud during a lot of this episode. Great dynamic between the three of them. The scene with the cat had me gasping! And "you're being recorded". Oof! Classic steve martin. Love him.

So excited about seeing a good quality show right now!!

We're learning more and more at a slow and methodical pace. There are both positives and negatives associated with it, but so far I am enjoying the show. This seems like the perfect role for Martin Short too.

Martin Short's backstory episode
markbunster3 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This ep follows up on S1E2 where we learned more about Selena Gomez's character Mabel. This time it's Oliver Putnam, impresario who is trying to get one last payday from his biggest sponsor (played by the incredible Nathan Lane).

It's not as good as Gomez' ep from a plot standpoint, where we suddenly learn the death of Tim Kono is much more personal than just a building suicide. But if you like Martin Short then you'll appreciate this episode. He attempts to find direction for the team's investigation by relying on his old gig and "finding his lead actor," the suspect. And the scenes with Lane are gold.

Two characters now have extensive skin in the game of finding whodunit (or if who turns out to be Tim); I expect we will learn in E4 what motivates Steve Martin's character and made him the antisocial curmudgeon we see today.

I was not so impressed with S1E1 and gave the show a short leash but E2 was super. E3 is not quite as good but is well more than enough to keep going in the series.

Excellent Backstories

Things get serious but they are also hilarious. The visit to the guy with the cat is beyond belief. The Nathan Lane encounter where they look at the awful advice Oliver has given him. "Don't invest in Les Mis. It's about a loaf of bread." Sting on the elevator. It ends on a very serious note, however.

Can't wait for the next episode! Edge of my seat! Also so great to see Amy Ryan in this! She was so great as Holly Flax in 'The Office'.

Only Murders in the Building is a cyclone of fresh air! I'm onto episode 3 and just want to watch one episode after another.... Steve Martin and Martin Short are always a great team but throw in Selina Gomez and it's pure magic....

How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?

Warning: Spoilers
A new unlikely suspect crops up. None other than Sting!

The singer not the wrestler.

Don't stand so close to him in the lift with your dog as Oliver finds out.

As Oliver, Charles and Mabel continue with their podcast. Narrowing down the suspects.

They home in one potential murderer only for Charles to find a frozen furball in the freezer. Meow.

I did laugh at Charles wrestling with a frozen cat. I also laughed at a forlorn Nathan Lane playing Teddy Dimas a theatre producer recounting all the hit shows he turned down courtesy of taking Oliver's expert advice. Les Miserable, Mama Mia, Hamilton. Instead Teddy ended up being waterlogged in Splash the musical.

I Can't Stop Laughing

Flashback: 2005. Oliver pitches Splash! The Musical to Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane), an investor who lives at the Arconia. Oliver tells the story of how he met his wife, Roberta. After some convincing, Teddy agrees to fund Oliver's show. Charles and Oliver work on the next episode of the podcast, arguing as usual. Ursula arrives with more Gut Milk, more information about Tim Kono, and final notice from Bunny for Oliver, telling him he has 24 hours to pay up or his power and water will be turned off. Charles has taken selfies with all the neighbors who have made complaints against Tim Kono. They need to find the man in the tie-dyed hoodie, and "Tim's fiancee," since he believes the ring in the package was for a proposal. Oliver has a "dream sequence" searching for Tim's murderer in the form of A Chorus Line-style audition. Howard becomes their lead suspect when it is revealed that Tim had threatened to kill Evelyn, Howard's cat. Oliver insists that Mabel and Charles interview Howard, giving them wire microphones to record for the podcast. All the neighbours including our three we are following are hiding their own secrets. It was nice to get to spend some time with Oliver and learning more about why he has family issues. While it was fun and hilarious to spend some more time with Howard. So far, each episode of Only Murders In The Building has been getting better and better and the comedy has been improving too. In this third episode, we see some of Oliver's failures but also the relationship with his now ex-wife. After learning about the connection between Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Tim (Julian Cihi), this episode now focuses on the other residences in The Arconia. A part of me thinks the hooded figure isn't a neighbour but someone who is either connected to the murder of one of our trio. It would be interesting if the hooded figure was someone to do with Charles as he is the one who saw them. My favourite scene of this episode is the scene where Charles and Mabel try to interrogate Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton). In this episode of Only Murders In The Building, Howard is seen as the main suspect because his cat died the same night as Tim. Howard even reveals that Tim was always upset about something and his temper had gotten worse in recent weeks.

Immediately I think all of this has to do with Oscar getting out of jail and he is upset with how things were left with Mabel. Tim also had lost his job. I found it funny that Howard thought that Tim poisoned Evelyn.

"Winnie, don't stand so close to Sting" !!

Excellent line, ruined only by Sting singing it at the end of the episode. Would have been better to have let it be enjoyed by those of us who remember The Police hit from 1980.

When speaking of the broadway shows Martin Short's character steered Nathan Lane's producer character away from

Lane: "Hamilton!" Short: "They picked the one founding father with no pizzazz!"

But he did produce "SPLASH! The Musical" which is exactly what it sounds like ;-)

Is it just me or does Short's character remind you of the one Dustin Hoffman played in Wag the Dog?
