New feature film The Guarantee, produced by John Kelleher Media in association with TV3, the Irish Film Board and the Bai is currently shooting in Dublin this week. Wildcard Distribution will bring the feature to Irish cinemas this autumn with a broadcast on TV3 scheduled for November. Directed by Ian Power (The Runway), the feature film recreates the drama surrounding the most significant political decision in modern Irish history when the Irish government decided to guarantee the entire domestic banking system. It’s the first time the story has been told on the big screen and charts the origins of that pivotal decision (four years before that fateful night), and follows developments through the peak of the boom to the beginning of the bust. As much as we’d like it too, it probably won’t feature a bunch of politicians and bankers being fed to a pride of starving lions.

For Demian Bichir, the deserved Oscar nomination he received for his moving turn in "A Better Life," was validation for a career that has been building steadily. This year the actor is beginning to see the payoff with more substantial roles in bigger films like Oliver Stone's "Savages" (where he was one of the highlights) and Robert Rodriguez's "Machete Kills" which is now shooting. But this week a film arrives that is likely to serve as a reminder of how he came to the attention of Hollywood in the first place. Bichir stars in "The Runway," the sophomore feature film from writer/director Ian Power. Inspired by true events, the comedy tells the story of Ernesto (Bichir), a Colombian pilot whose plane has crashed in a small Irish village. Not able to speak a word of English, he befriends a precocious 9-year-old boy named Paco (Jamie Kierans), the...

Searching for the perfect summer family movie? Look no further than The Runway. This charming Irish comedy from first-time director Ian Power is based on the true story of a South American pilot who crash-landed in a small town in Ireland in the 1980s. Demian Bichir stars as Ernesto, the unlucky pilot who finds himself stranded in West Cork with precious cargo in hand. Unable to speak any English, Ernesto is at the mercy of Paco (Tff 2012 Whole Lotta Sole's Jamie Kierans), a precious nine-year-old boy whose overactive imagination and minimal knowledge of Spanish allow him to view Ernesto as a hero. Eager to help the marooned pilot after hearing Paco's inflated account of the mystery man, the eccentric townspeople come together to help Ernesto rebuild his plane. When Ernesto's story receives worldwide attention and accusers from his checkered past descend on West Cork, Paco and the villagers must defend...

Demian Bichir was a surprise Oscar nominee last year for his work in A Better Life, and a lot of moviegoers were introduced for the first time to the Mexican actor, who's also appeared on Showtime's Weeds, in Steven Soderbergh's Che, and most recently in the new Oliver Stone film Savages. But in the new comedy The Runway, which opens VOD on July 18 and in select theaters on July 20, audiences get to see a lighter side of Bichir, playing a Colombian pilot who, unable to speak a word of English, accidentally crash lands in a small Irish village. In this exclusive clip we're premiering below, Bichir's character Ernesto is introduced to the village by Paco, the young boy who is the only person in town who speaks Spanish and becomes Ernesto's translator. After decades of plugging away with a variety of film and television productions, Mexico-born actor Demián Bichir broke through last winter with A Better Life. Most of the indie drama's success can be attributed solely to Bichir's subtle yet exquisite performance as a hardworking Mexican gardener trying to build opportunities for his son in East L.A., while avoiding the notice of immigration agents who could deport him. The resounding praise for his portrayal culminated in his first Oscar nomination, pitting him against such A-listers as Brad Pitt (Moneyball), George Clooney (The Descendants) and Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). Though he didn't win that night, Bichir has since won the notice of Hollywood, and with that kind of attention comes the re-emergence of older films that can now get traction thanks to the star's involvement. Lucky for Bichir, in his case this feature is only The Runway, a ...

A new contemporary Irish screening series comes to Nyu’s Cantor Film Center on Sept. 30, 2011. HBO is adapting the documentary into a new drama series. Irish Film New York (Ifny) includes the Galway Film Festival-winning feature Parked, a story of friendship, hope, and perseverance between two ‘neighbors’ living in their cars starring Colm Meaney. Irish cinema is completely saturated with woeful war stories about the loss of love, innocence, family and country. Too many times has the blood soaked story of the Easter Rising been told on our screens. With each new widely released Irish production comes more dreary tales of days gone by. There are many common themes and styles that reverberate through the annals of Irish film, but have we ever had a really great Irish comedy? Better yet, has there ever been a heartwarming, uplifting tale of love, friendship and adventure? Well, now there is. The Runway tells the 'kind of' true story of Paco (Jamie Kierans), a young boy who encounters a crashed pilot one faithful night in Mallow in 1983. The mysterious pilot, Ernesto (Demian Bichir), is taken in by Paco and his mother where they awkwardly try to communicate as to where he's come from. When it all becomes clear,...

English-born, American actor Wentworth Miller has just signed on to star in the indie drama Analog.
Based on a script written by Mike Million that appeared on the 2005 Black List, the story is about an introverted genius who struggles to find love in this growing digital world.
Producer Brendan McDonald, whose other productions include the Luke Wilson comedy Tenure and the Irish indie The Runway, was able to scrape together 3 million dollars so far for the project and expects to film in Michigan this summer.
Princeton educated Miller may be joining the Black List ranks with Millions. It seems the former Prison Break star has been moonlighting as a screenwriter and using the pseudonym Ted Foulke. His drama Stoker has attracted Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and director Chan-wook Park.
Looks like that ivy league education is paying off!

The new trend for Irish films to focus on family dynamics (which are often dysfunctional) rather than on political struggles is front and center in "The Runway", a brand new feel-good film inspired by a true story. Focusing on the daily lives of two Irish children in the 1980s, "The Runway" is remarkable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is its focus on kids instead of freedom fighters. Could it be that we’re finally stepping out from the shadow of history? The plot of "The Runway" is as simple and charming as the film it inspired. Based on real life events, the film opens in 1983 when a South American pilot crash lands his plane in a tiny Co. Cork field. Soon, against all the odds, the local’s villagers are building a runway to get him back into the air and safely home. That’s...
