Souls is beautifully shot and overall a great episode, with Rachel Roth and Donna Troy making their anticipated return
"Souls" follows the aftermath of the previous episode with Jason Todd turning against Crane and him shooting Tim Drake whom deduced Dick's secret identity and wanted to become the next Robin. But this episode marks the first appearance in season 3 of Teagan Croft as Rachel Roth. Episode 3.09 focuses on Rachel's efforts to resurrect Donna whilst Tim awakens in the afterlife, where he encounters Donna and Hank. It also continues Bruce Wayne's character arc in a small yet big way. There's lots of things happening in this episode and a lot of things to love, the reintroduction of Rachel Roth is something I've looked forward to since the beginning of the season and we're now almost at the end, yet it's the perfect time in bringing her back and having Donna and Hank make an appearance in the afterlife. Though I would have liked to see more of Gotham and what the Titans is up too, having an episode focused entirely on Rachel and the characters in the afterlife was needed, for character development sake and of course to move the plot forward in the resurrection of both Donna and Tim who died from a bullet wound. Richard Hatem penned the script for this episode and I didn't see any flaws with it, overall great writing and natural dialogue. Regarding the pacing, it was great and was nicely edited with good transitions.
Boris Mojsovski returns to direct another episode, fantastic work done by him. There were also some truly amazing cinematography. The whole episode looked fantastic as the show usually does. The visual effects were also great and I got a feeling of a bigger budget regarding Rachel's powers, the production and art design were top notch, though we didn't see much of Themyscira but the amount we saw was incredible and simply perfect. There's so much to love about this episode, the story it's telling and the characters who are in the episode and of course the acting performances. The chemistry Alan Ritchson has with everyone is just so entertaining to watch, Hank Hall was one of my favorites as his presence on the screen lit up the room. There weren't any mind blowing performances in this episode, most were great. It's mostly the feeling of Rachel Roth and Donna Troy being back, and the actors who play the iconic characters. The musicals score was impressive and so was the cinematography.
Having now established the afterlife in Titans and it looks great by the way, I just feel that the writers and producers could have done more with it, I did feel that the direction Boris took with it was great but more explanation would have been better. I'm excited to see what the show has to offer with Conor Leslie and Teagan Croft back as Donna Troy and Rachel Roth back in the third season, there's many possibilities and still Jonathan Crane and Red Hood but also Blackfire that's supposed to be the second antagonist but have been more as an supporting character trying to redeem herself. I still believe that Lex Luthor is behind her imprisonment and the mastermind. But back to the episode. "Souls" was overall a great episode that brought us answers, characters returning and just a beautifully shot episode. It met my expectations.
