Canada’s Sphere Media has completed its C$24.6M ($18.2M) of UK-based distributor Abacus Media Rights. Going forwards, Abacus will be known as Sphere Abacus and act as Sphere’s sales wing.
Abacus founder and Managing Director Jonathan Ford will take up the same role at Sphere Abacus, reporting directly to Sphere CEO Bruno Dubé.
Sphere had struck the deal to buy Abacus — which shops the likes of Leaving Neverland, Travels With Agatha, Scrublands and Sphere’s Sort Of — back in June after a search for a distribution partner. Abacus has carved out a reputation as a key mid-sized distributor after launching in early 2020, just as the Covid-19 pandemic hit Europe.
The plan for Sphere Abacus going forwards is for it to work with Sphere’s production business and continue to invest in, pre-sell and sell scripted and unscripted productions from indie producers. The company will remain in London and structurally little will change.

Last April, Sphere Media took the Canadian Screen Awards by storm with 22 awards for its scripted content, including a record 12 wins for the historical Black drama “The Porter” and seven for queer comedy “Sort Of.” It was a big night for Canada’s third-largest independent producer, and in particular for Jennifer Kawaja, Sphere’s president of scripted and feature films for English Canada.
Previously, Kawaja spent decades heading up Sienna Films with her business partner, Julia Sereny, helming several award-winning projects like “Cardinal,” “Trickster” and “One Dead Indian.” The duo sold the company to Kew Media Group in 2017 and in 2020, Montreal-based Datsit Sphere snatched it up when Kew was placed into receivership. Last year, Sphere restructured and rebranded under a single banner with the intention of streamlining content creation, production and distribution.

The very first email Toronto filmmaker Clement Virgo received on Wednesday morning was from Scarborough author Catherine Hernandez.
“It said, ‘Congratulations. Well deserved’,” Virgo tells Et Canada. “At first I wasn’t sure what she was talking about.”
Then he checked the news and saw that his movie “Brother”, a coming-of-age story set in Scarborough that he wrote and directed, received 14 Canadian Screen Awards nominations, topping all nods in the film category.

Just as Hernandez’s book was turned into an acclaimed film (2021’s “Scarborough”), “Brother” is an adaptation of a 2017 novel by David Chariandy. It follows two sons of Caribbean immigrants as they grow into young men while traversing Toronto’s ’90s hip hop scene. Among the CSA nods it received were Best Motion Picture and Achievement in Direction.
“It feels heartening and overwhelming.

The Canadian Screen Awards has unveiled nominations for the national film and TV prize-giving, and the CBC civil rights drama The Porter leads the film and TV field with 19 mentions in all, including for best small-screen drama.
The first Canadian drama series from an all-Black creative team, which also streams on BET+, centers on the lives of Black train porters and their families as they launch North America’s first Black labor union in the 1920s.
The TV categories, voted on by around 3,000 Canadian industry insiders, also sees the CBC series Detention Adventure and Sort Of – a Peabody award-winning show about a gender fluid young Muslim in Toronto played by Bilal Baig — nab 15 nominations each in an awards show shaping up to be a major showcase for people of color.
That follows Canadian film, and TV industry efforts to ensure diversity and inclusivity in the country’s indie production sector and prize-giving process.

As Toronto director Clement Virgo and the cast of “Brother” took the stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre on the night of Sept. 9 to soak in the hometown standing ovation after film’s world premiere, a delegation of Black producers from across Canada was settling in for a week of networking ops curated by the Black Screen Office (Bso).

We talk a lot about history-making Emmy nominations and wins, and it’s always fun to talk about “firsts” — such as “Squid Game” becoming the first non-English-language show to land a series nomination. But one breakthrough that struck me was BET’s significant showing via its streaming service, BET+.
That includes a nod in the directing for a comedy series category, for the freshman series “The Ms. Pat Show,” and choreography for scripted programming via the period drama “The Porter.” It’s the first time BET has received any major scripted series nominations; the company’s previous three nods were for music direction, actress in a short-form series and exceptional merit in nonfiction filmmaking. BET’s only Emmy to date came from the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which honored it for the public service campaign “Rap-It-Up.”

There’s no official announcement just yet, but the Canadian and U.S. TV platforms are set to renew the civil rights drama about 1920s Black train employees and their families in Montreal and Chicago for a second season.
Showrunner Annmarie Morais and director Charles Officer talked to The Hollywood Reporter as scripts are being readied to continue portraying Black train porters’ efforts to launch North America’s first Black labor union.

TV academy voters are faced with a daunting task when they fill out their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballot in that they have to consider 171 shows for Best Drama Series. This is up by 38 from last year. As has been the case since 2017, members do not have to winnow their choices down to a set amount and are instead being told to “vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Last year’s champ, “The Crown,” will not return to seek another victory, as no new episodes of the Netflix series have aired since its fourth season finale in November 2020. Of its seven 2021 rivals, three – “The Boys,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “The Mandalorian” – also did not return in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022. Another two – “Lovecraft Country” and “Pose” – ended their runs in October 2020 and June 2021, respectively.

Catherine Tait is unusually open and candid for the head of a major public broadcaster. She’s also not afraid of whimsy — at one point in an exclusive chat with Deadline stopping mid-sentence to exclaim the beauty of a hummingbird that’s flown onto windowsill of her LA hotel room.
The exec is President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada — meaning she oversees by the far the biggest and most influential broadcaster in Canada, a territory tied to the U.S. entertainment business like no other.
To differentiate from the giant to the south, Canada has successfully created its own broadcasting and production market using various tax incentives and production treaties that have attracted overseas investment. However, the arrival of Netflix, Amazon and the studio-owned global streamers has created a major challenge — producers now have more options for their wares and many are securing premium deals, meaning fewer projects are available.

It’s difficult not to root for The Porter‘s Junior, especially because most of his schemes laid the tracks for a happy ending of sorts in the BET+ drama’s finale.
He got rid of the conductor and Sticks, and then he put a down payment on a building so that Marlene could open a clinic for poor Black Canadians. That said, if the series is picked up for a sophomore season — and it sure positioned itself to be — Junior will have to deal with possible retaliation from Sticks. The train company owner, Mr. Edwards, could possibly start poking...

Pullman porters were an intricate part of the Black experience in America and Canada for the better part of 100 years, and BET+’s new drama The Porter is out to spotlight and celebrate the men who did so much with so little.
Based on true events and real people, The Porter premiered this Thursday and is set in 1921 Montreal. It’s a period of time that allows the limited series to ambitiously tackle the Jazz Age, flappers, bootlegging, unionization, racism, colorism and civil rights.

BET+ is venturing into the historical/period pieces with this intriguing mini-series inspired by real events!
The Porter dives into the height of the North American railway system, mainly for Black workers who made their bread and butter in the transportation business as porters, a job that was one of the most common for Black men at the time.
And through what promises to be an enthralling series, The Porter draws from the formation of the first Black Union.
Through The Porter, we follow two train porters who were as close as ever, Junior Massey and Zeke Garrett.
One tragedy strikes on the job, leaving the community reeling; the two set on completely different paths that will inevitably conflict with one another in their dogged pursuit of a better life and all that it entails as Black men during the early 1920s.
Junior takes an "if you can't beat them,...
