The First half of this movie was great especially "Kathir's" Glimpse few minutes before the Intermission and the second half was overall great Because of "Kathir's" Flashback, the way it was shown was beautiful to me and The "Veera Soora" scene will literal goosebumps, He killed each and every moment of it, Prabhu may have been bland but As Kathir he shines......Everything in this movie is great Dhanush's Acting, Yuvan's Music, Selva's Directing, Om Prakash's Cinematography everything was on spot, Except for the climax, I mean It's better but could've been a little bit better, The movie would have been interesting without comedic side and without Prabhu (Dhanush) character.... An overall good film You Can Watch Twice But Not Thrice!.

It's a movie where it describes about that how a person changes a lot due to the incidents that happens into his life.
Selvaraghavan and dhanush with their team members had nailed it with their narration and some clues left out on there at everywhere to make a signature move of Selvaraghavan sir.
It's a kind of ghost movie but hits totally different with the film, the dual actors of dhanush also makes it different in the screen.
The intermission makes it to feel some goosebumps right there with the Yuvan's BGM.
Second half was not more specific to pick the particular scenes but they did a great job by completing a good looking film in the whole screenplay.
The rating of 7 is the reason for being pretty slow in the first half but we know as that's how director selvaraghavan and so it's acceptable for us to go through with this........

Take Away actor Dhanush and Yuvan Shankar Raja, you are left with nothing in this film. I agree that this is rather poor for an attempted 'COMEBACKS', director Selvaraghavan is only person to blame in this project. There are couple of problems with this movie, main thing is that it fails to convince on psychological metamorphoses that turn twins into enemies nor makes up its mind what it's trying to convey as most of the interesting things in the film are in the first half. Whilst I knew from the beginning that it was going to be a predictable fare and it did. Right from the opening i knew where this Selvaraghavan was taking the film, i just hang in there because to see more of villain Dhanush. It gets draggy and crumpled in the second half, not what I came for, but does right by it for the current (actor>director) Selva's standard and the ending feels like a rushed cap off to a film such as this. But the film boils down to a simple parable about good and evil, actions of the past and generic revenge angle.
I am not gonna say this is horrid, the paranormal and psychological angle is riveting which is explored well in the first half. They had me in the first half . Core plot is nothing but similar to Muni franchise story , they tried to give different treatment to it . First half was intresting , the way they build story and tension was impressive , it was really confusing at first whether it's paranormal or psychological thriller . Interval block was total Bang . Second half was totally contrast to the first half , a complete let down and climax was terrible to the core . I expected more from "Kathir" character . Dhanush once again gave a terrific performance . Yuvan's background score was mind blowing . Cinematography was good . Overall watch at your own risk .

Selvaraghavan and his brother came together after a decade. I thought it would be a psychological thriller, but this time he went paranormal. They went out of their limits and stepped into a wrong territory.
The movie commenced well, but the moment the audience it's paranormal plot, the expectations dilute like solid ice in a hot iron pan!! These kind of movies should leave the audience into believing that the paranormal things may mostly exist. But in this case you will realise that you are getting into a illogical paranormal stuff.
The score from Yuvan Shankar Raja is very good and that holds the movie to some extent.
Dhanush delivers well, especially as the mischievous twin. I could see that there was some yester year style statements in it. It's a decent performance on a weak plot.
When the plot is weak, what ever you do will be like applying lipstick to a grannie!!
If you have time to kill you can watch this. If you are keen on a good movie, avoid.

Decent story...expected more from Selva and dhanush combo. Started off as horror then moves onto thriller. Dhanush as usual acting was superb. Story was very thin. Both dhanush as in why they are the way they are was not explained leading to some weak screenplay. Music was absolutely garbage yuvan has lost it. Can watch one time. The kids acting was great. Overall would say it can be watched once. Disappointing as expecting much more with selva dhanush yuvan combo. Lead actress did decent with what ever limited role she had. Yogi babu comedy was a relief in the very serious movie. 6/10 average.

The first part of the film was captivating until the revelation of the 2nd character's introduction & rather its wrongdoings.
2nd half started with a backstory followed by a vengeance seemed so usual and felt a bit dramatic.
There are a few good things in the film especially the father-daughter relationship if you're in that zone, you might probably like this film to the core.
I realised lately that the story was written by Dhanush and not Selva, that's when all the dots were connected for why this Selvaraghavan's make was lacking that tingling touch of the maker, looks like Selva got carried away & trapped by his brother's charm of story-telling and thus agreed to put his legendary tag to the film.
And I hated the idea of bringing in the kids to this kinda vengeance plot as it has the potential to exploit & corrupt the smaller minds.
And I don't think, U1 scored music for this film since it is just way below average, nothing mentionable.
And Dhanush's acting was something that keeps us engaged & holds us together till the very end.

The teaser literally showed that it's a story about a good brother and a bad brother. Why do y'all expect something bigger than that? Me watching the teaser itself I knew the plot would be small, why in the world do people expect so much of crap in a small film?
I understand that it's a Selvaraghavan film so you guys can't stop yourselves from expecting special from Selva-Dhanush combo but look at Selva's previous films, NGK and Nenjam Marapathilai was so much worse than Naane Varuven:

A father played by danush finds out that his daughter sathya played by hiya may have a psychological issue. The events that transpires after this is the basic plot of the movie.
I really loved dhanushs performance, he appears in a double role. He handles both the characters amazingly, as prabhu he shows his love towards his daughter, his fear, his helplessness in a few moments beautifully through his performance. As kathir we can see the anger, the demon in him through his performance. Indhuja ravichandran was good in her role. Hiya davey does a amazing job as the daughter. Cinematography by om prakash was really good. The scenes in the jungle and in prabhus flat was really nice. Yuvans music was really good i especially loved the song veera soora. All other technical aspects in the movie was good.
The issue i had in the movie is the writing in the second half. A lot of things felt underwritten. Especially i felt kathirs character should have been explored more. The revenge aspect really falls flat. The movie fails to create a lasting impact due to the poorly written second half.

Weakest Selvaraghavan - Dhanush film.

The magical director - actor duo who can single handedly raise the stakes for any film have come up with a movie which shows promise but never fully delivers. This Aalavandhan lite meets any Hollywood film on possession minus the exorcism, has a decent premise, even starts off well but the intriguing characters are never fully explored. The trained hunter vs a weak unskilled man premise could've been a different beast altogether.
The first half is more like a typical horror thriller which was a surprise yet it doesn't give anything unique. Selvaraghavan succeeds in maintaining the intrigue till the interval and a severely downplaying Dhanush as Prabhu scores all the point. The "high" created by the interval doesn't transform into a rocking second half instead we get a predictable tale of twins - one pure evil and the other obviously innocent. Story is very simple and watchable mainly for the menacing persona of Dhanush's kathir character. First half travels as a supernatural touches slowly alters as a psycho thriller in the backstory ( 2nd half). Special mention to the psycho path role of dhanush offers a threathening feel to the audiences. Female leads are seen in less scope which is a small loophole in the film, also yogibabu and prabhu had weightage. This naane varuvean is a sure treat for thriller genre fans and also for the psycho horror thriller fans. The eerie scenes in the 1st half is so intense and doesn't follow the routine creepy touches. This film is mostly inspired from hollywood flicks like insidiuos and conjuring, Overall - this outing a definitely a decent movie with good thrills and emotions!

First 30 minutes or so into it, my expectations for the rest of the movie considerably went down, and it still ended up being way more disappointing . Neither the story nor the characters were compelling or believable.😏 some performances felt theatrical and over the top. It felt like each character was acting in his/her bubble and was completely disconnected from other characters and the story on the whole. Songs were forgettable. There were a couple of "mass" moments but even they couldn't manage to keep the movie afloat. It didn't satisfactorily deliver on any fronts- thriller, horror or drama. The only saving grace was the kids' performances. Enjoyed a few of Yogi baba's too.

I do not know why there are so many bad reviews for this movie....... It is definitely worth a watch. Dhanush's duo performance was very good.... And the little girl who acts as Sathya has done a marvelous job...

Good movie with average story and few suspenses
Yuvan music is key to the elevation of some scenes.. interval block of the movie is one of the best in recent times.. director done a good work.. cinematography also good
Coming to acting of dhanush..it is difficult to act two opposite role in a single movie.but dhanush done both character smoothly which is the main and make this movie watcheble..his role as kathir is one of the best..
All songs are good credit to all singers and yuvan Shankar..the climax of the movie which end with open hole to interpretation is exiting and good to see sequel of this movie.

Dhanush efforts in playing a sociopath character is extraordinary . The character of Kathir is dark and scary, a little over dosage in performance would have made it extremely dark and unfit for family audience.
After narration of flash back in second half , story becomes predictable.
Dhanush performance in second half speaks about his matured acting skills. Yuvan s bgm worked well in second half , compared to first half. Also second half quickly moved towards end, after just revealing the reason behind possession of Prabhu s (Dhanush) daughter.
Good attempt by Selva. Expecting More from him.

Poor script, idiotic acting.. bgm not inline with the scenes... Phycological twist and turns doesnt match the storyline.....Skill set of Selvaragavan and Danush mashup didnt match here.. something is quite wrong.. Danush solo performance is ok but not worked with others. Kid did a great effort but not with inline of storyline... poor kid. Hope to see better movies from this duo in future.... really disappointment and need more editing and backoffice work before releasing.. Felt like there was some hurry in releasing the movie and everything was done on a hustle to go live to this holiday. Danush should be more selective.

Dhanush acting is really external performance and others actors like their childrens actress and also Selva raghavan. BGM is mass yuvan Shankar Raja is really super work. And this is my honest review so only I give 10 out of 10 to this movie. Watch the movie and support really superb and supernatural movie for all type audience. Don't miss this movie and this is a magical combo of Tamil cinema . The sea motography is really super and also the location is also match to this movie. Songs are really good the one man show is Dhanush really her character is extremely playing in this movie dual role does not similar to either of characters.thanks.

This movie had a great potential..The trailer was so promising..First of all I didn't think this movie had anything to do with supernatural, but i had to go with the flow...i was expecting a complete psychological thriller...If it wasn't about supernatural,it would've been great..Dhanush's kathir was awesome, but his acts were not that demonic..i was rooting for both dhanush's...There were some cringy scenes from supporting actors...its worth watching...the making and camera angles are all good..music is awesome.. lighting is good...nothing bad about the making crew ...the only problem was with the second half..eventhough i didn't like the supernatural involvement,i was intrigued on seeing the intermission
.but later on ,it felt weak..

Let me start with a spoiler because I think that is the only good thing about the film and that might help you bear it. So, Nannu Varuvean has Dhanush in a double role. In one role, he is a simple working guy, and in the other one, he is completely dashing and violent. Well, that's the only reason why you should watch this film. And if you want to skip it, then I have 10 reasons for that. Naane Varuvean is a terribly outdated story of twin brothers with dusted storytelling. There are hardly any thrills, any exciting drama, or technically brilliant scenes. What does a horror thriller mean without these factors? Nothing. That's what Naane Varuvean is. Prabhu is an average suburban man for whom his family (a wife and a daughter) is everything. His life is turned upside down when his daughter Sathya is possessed by the ghost of a little boy. The story goes to a flashback where you see the other avatar of Dhanush, and you'll love it, if not the story. Now, what's it got to do with Sathya and Prabhu? Let that remain a secret here. I can't give away the entire film in spoilers. Dhanush as Prabhu and Kathir are fine. Prabhu may look a little outdated, but Kathir provides him with a good change from his recent roles. I have to admire Dhanush's versatility and his conviction for the characters he plays. In Asuran and Karnan, he looks like an older man, as per the character's demand, and here he looks young, just what his character needs. Elli AvrRam plays a mute woman. That's good, you see. I would have hated to see her deliver dialogue with her foreign accent like she always does in Hindi movies. Dhanush excels in acting the both characters. The girl who plays Dhanush's daughter was good. Selva just came in for just 10mins but he makes you shiver. I liked both the twin's story(Dhanush with the possessed daughter and Dhanush the psycho character). The bgm of the negative Dhanush is sssoooo gooodddd. Yuvan's music for Dhanush is always different. 1st half where Dhanush struggled with his possessed daughter amd second half where the negative Dhanush who has an ambition of hunting humans both was perfectly done by Dhanush. Storyline is good, very fast and edgy but climax could have been better. All in all its a good thriller.

A compact revenge thriller, the compactness of which works for and against the film. While the length ensures that there is no boredom, this also robs the film of any depth and drama. And without this depth, the final punch feels weak. This is a welcome genre film featuring a star hero and the first half is a pleasant surprise. The sparseness of the moodily lit frames, the handful of supporting characters and Yuvan Shankar Raja's eerie score, ensure that there is a constant sense of dread. And when things start getting serious, the filmmaking reaches a crescendo, and by the time we get to the interval, the director brings us to the edge of our seats.
But just when we expect the second half to deliver us such moments, especially with the promised return of Kathir, the film begins to lose intensity.
On the whole, Selvaraghavan delivers a fine thriller with Naane Varuvean which throws enough surprises in the first half but has a predictable second that lacks depth.

It was rather obvious from the promotions and trailers that this movie didn't have a lot going for it other than the lead actor and it's clash with Ponniyin Selvan. The writing in this movie is very feeble, some moments come out of nowhere and are downright jarring, in a bad way obviously. The first half was alright but the movie takes nosedive into the Mariana trench as we enter the 2nd half. Even dhanush cannot save this movies with his acting chops. Don't waste your time on it, watch it if you are a dhanush fan or if you are fond of movies with poor screenplay. I am surprised by the number of 10 stars it has, don't fall for it.
Overall Underwhelming

Started decent, was engaging during the paranormal investigation portion and peaked at the interval portion. But a sub par 2nd half and disappointing climax made it underwhelming though technically brilliant with decent music from Yuvan. Dhanush as usual steals the show with the Prabhu character as innocent dad and Kathir as the crowd pleasing Hunter. The interval portion definitely will be a Goose bumps moment and the Veera soora song is a different vibe. As for the 2 female leads, they are just for the sake of it. Special appreciation to the girl playing Dhanush's daughter who was simply brilliant during the possession scenes. The twin actors playing Young dhanush and as Kathir's sons also did their part well. Overall ,a downer from Nenjam marapathillai albeit a terrific idea. Hope Selva delivers Soon.
Logic mistakes spoiled an otherwise Good Story

First half is great, keeps us guessing what's really going on. Acting, music and screenplay are also good. Great variation in portraying the two characters by Dhanush. Antagonist's character is well developed.
Now coming to the negatives of the movie. Protagonist seems to be too weak to handle himself. Making is okayish. Apart from these, a couple of silly logic mistakes in the story: one in the flashback and the other in the climax totally ruined the movie for me. The fact that they could've been easily avoided by slight modification is what irritating me.
Could've been a solid movie if not for the two blunders.
