Everyone's Got To Learn Sometime

Just when you think the show has stood on its own two feet then things come back from Life On Mars to remind you it is a spin off series but a very good one at that. A great storyline, humour and music again. It would make a great cop series without need for the sci-fi element. Is Gene changing his ways?

The little patter of tiny feet and Rowland the rat
Sleepin_Dragon9 August 2015
A journalist turns up who Gene had an encounter with previously, she comes with his coat and seemingly his baby. It seems like Gene is being moved on to Plymouth. Alex gets a bizarre message from the unknown man, the voice is particularly familiar. The instant dislike between the Journalist and Alex is good fun, both are vying for Gene's attention. Corruption is abundant, and Roger Allam appears to be the Spider at the centre of the web. The episode seems to be building up to taking down Allam. There is humour in this episode, but there's more menace in this episode, there's a darker undertone. We had Morph last week, this week we get another 80s legend, Rowand the Rat, Molly's there as a Ratfan. This is an outstanding episode, best so far of Series 2.

Gene Hunt = Daddy?

Warning: Spoilers
'Ashes' has really come into its won in its second series, and the police corruption plot that has been threaded through each episode has been well played.

The show is also confident enough now standing on its own that it can include little references to Sam Tyler and 'Life on Mars', from which this was spun off.

It's another strong episode, with lots of gripping twists and turns, with the mysteries around why Alex is in 1982 still not being solved.

I'm sure the RSPCA were not happy about Gene shooting the dog though, that did seem a bit unneeded.

On the whole though, another strong episode.
