3 pieces of a puzzle
bbboesgaard7 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This is a somewhat disturbing film. I disagree with the discription - there is no humour in it, it is more like a raw fragmented portrait of the 3 men, well 2 men and a boy.. The boy Harald is being raised by an aggressive sociopatic mother and becomes more an more excluded.. The young man Emil feels he is being excluded by society and treated very unfair - he is unable to see things from others perspective and strongly believes that the moral values of society are falling, without seing his own lack of moral, hustling his mother - attempting blackmail - apparently attempting a rape without a plan.

The older man Petter fails to realize how aggressive he is, again without the ability to see things from other than his perspective. He believed in old masculine values and Norwegian historical greatness. He sees women as a threat he is unable to match or even understand - he is a dinosaur without any strength left.

My understanding of this movie is that it portraits 3 pieces of the tragic monster Breivik - without even mentioning him. Except for the indirect "Him" the title. To me, it does this subtle and makes its point well. The film owes a lot to great actors - they all perform very well!

But my conclusion is that the theme - an investigation of a monster is TOO subtle. Am I the only one who sees it this way? Still I give it 6 stars, under the selfconfident assumption that I "get it" and if so it is a well done and played unsentimental investigation of "him".

A look at the male role in modern society
OJT7 January 2024
In "Him" we follow three angry misunderstood males in contemporary Norway, and we follow them in their life, one day in Oslo. The 11-year-old Harald is a boy who constantly falls outside every group. He's an outsider, not fitting in anywhere. The 30-year-old Emil is unemployed and therefore angry man, looking down on all around him. The third is 60-year-old Petter who is trying to make a making a film about the mal national hero Fridtjof Nansen, facing competition from other female directors. On this day he crashes into a car in the parking lot and makes a hit-and-run. But he is observed and gets a phone call, buy the angry Emil.

They are all in problems with modern-day Norway, where men have lost their dominance as a gender, and losing their reality grip, being bossed around by women.

This is Guro Bruusgaard's feature debut after some short films, as well as working on several other movies and she has gathered a solid bunch of Norwegian actors in this drama, which also has a lot of humor. The movie catches your interest right away and keeps it all the way.

The movie gives no answer, but tells a lot.
