Focusing on the main story

Warning: Spoilers
Eternal is a very good comeback by the writers.

Where did Davis come from? What has he been doing since his arrival to Earth? Why is he in social service? He knows his destiny. When will he realize what he needs to do? How long can he hide his darker side from Chloe and Clark?

Some of these questions were answered in Eternal. Redefining Tess' role the series from just a Lex-replacement to the one who brings Clark and Davis together make her more important to the show. Most of all, re-focusing on the macro story of Clark's and Davis' destiny while bringing them closer was a great move.

I would give a rating of nothing less than 10.

A trip to memory lane thanks to great flashbacks, massive revelations both on the meteor showers as on the future, another take on the myth and drawings in the cave, well build up story with never a dull moment, good performances....all in one episode! LOVE IT!

What was Chloe planning to do after she locked that door?

Warning: Spoilers
I understand what this episode was trying to accomplish. The idea of basing Doomsday's background, and the revelation that the Kent's could have easily found Davis instead of Clark was cute.

***CONTAINS SPOILERS***

At first I wondered if they were playing the right episode from the time Lionel, Martha and Johnathon took the stage (It was nice viewing old faces again though) I actually kept a look out for Lex (luckily I didn't hold my breath). Then there was the liquid that formed into a boy, then I knew that was something new.

What had me cracking up was little Alexander (Lex) Luthor (Oh that explains his baldness).

On a simple note this episode was just average and the only problem it faced was executing the story.

I really missed Erica Durance (Lois) here, she always adds a sense of humor to each episode and it felt like something was missing.

I admire Cassidy Freeman's (Tess Mercer) on screen presence. She always portrays a captivating villainess, but her performance lacked the decent uproar needed. Her opening scene where she just 'happened' to tumble upon Lionel's 'fairytale' diary and crack the furtive enigma hidden inside, lacked the basic challenge. It felt to sudden that Tess discovered Davis' true identity, Clark's true abilities, their fates and destinies all in one episode. The story defeated it's development purpose, that everything seemed out of control.

It didn't surprise me that Davis hung around Chloe so much, after all she is the reason he remains in his human physique. It is also understandable that Chloe would seek the companionship of the guy that had her in his pursuit for weeks; another way to get over Jimmy. Though when she found out his true colors and was pushed to take his life to save Clark's, I kept thinking that 'this is too easy' and 'that isn't the way Clark's prophesied enemy was going to die'. I actually laughed when Chloe placed her hands on the glass to match Davis' and wondered 'does Chloe love Davis that much, how much does she really love Jimmy?' Then I got thinking 'Kryptonite is the one thing that could kill Clark, what better a weapon to kill him than a Kryptonite villain'. As the episode rambled on and Davis was a no-show and Tess taunted Clark about his powers, his destiny to become a 'superhero' and so on, I kept wondering why was Tess suddenly getting up in Clark's face, following him to the barn, being a complete nag.

Is she trying to become Clark's all-time enemy? Seriously when Clark said "Are you threatening me", I really didn't hear a threat in Tess' tone.

The flashbacks to Davis' past playing with Lex was interesting, especially when the inner beast in him came out after Lionel abandoned him.

It was just the continuous 'prophecy' talk which made the episode seem a bit 'phony'.

Finally when Davis made his final appearance I was disappointed. Just stumbling upon Chloe prophesying his immortality (there goes that word again), telling her that he loves her and the only way he wouldn't seize upon Clark would be if she stayed with him (how romantic-I guess). As Chloe began to walk away, I was in the dark about what would be her next move. Was she actually walking away? Would Davis spiral out of control and turn into an ultimate killer? Would he then go into a rage and fight Clark?... but just then she walked up the stairs and closed the door...

What was she going to do after she latched that door? Was she really staying with him so Clark wouldn't die? Okay I like Smallville, but even that could have been done much better.

Get your facts straight

It's always annoying to me whenever a show tries to go back and change or add to previous story lines to fit current ones.

If there had been another boy in that meteor shower I could almost guarantee you that we would have heard of it from the Luthors by now. First Lionel, then Lex (not to mention plenty others), were both obsessed with everything concerning that day so I have no doubt that both would have unturned every stone to get to the truth. To say that, not only did Lex share some quality playtime with the boy, but that Lionel had him in his grasp and let him go just because he wasn't The Traveler is a little far-fetched.

One could only imagine what Lex would have done concerning the second child while on one of his obsessive tirades. Lex is smart, it's hard to believe that someone of his caliber would overlook something so huge. That's why it's difficult for me to swallow this new story line they decided to spin. I love the character of Doomsday but I think they could have taken a little different approach to it. Not sure why they chose to deviate from the comics as to his origins on earth.

We also have Tess swooping in, acting like she owns the place trying to let Clark in on secrets about his destiny. According to her the two headed creature in the Kuwatche caves are in fact Clark and Doomsday rather than Lex Luthor as previously believed. Again, this is something that just doesn't sit right with me since it seems writers are just trying to twist things to fit whatever story line they have at the moment.

The legend of the Kuwatche states that Sageeth is a friend of Naman who is said to be like a brother. The prophecy tells of Sageeth one day turning against Naman and becoming the "bearer of darkness". The two will represent the balance between good and evil. Granted since Doomsday originated in Krypton I suppose you could say that he's a type of "brother" to Clark and it's no doubt that he's as evil as Clark is good. I tend to believe though that the battle between good and evil is more of the evil in humanity rather than someone like Doomsday. That's not even including the fact that if the Kuwatche legends are assumed to be an accurate account of the life and destiny of Superman the legend also states that if Sageeth ever touched the StarBlade, it would disintegrate. We know this happened previously with Lex and Lionel which would make it impossible for Doomsday to be Sageeth. So either Tess proves she has absolutely no idea what she talking about or someone should have hired better fact checkers for their writers.

Lois was noticeably absent in this episode, yet again. It seems they bring her in only on the filler episodes and she gets the boot for the ones containing any major story arc. Such a shame.

Most memorable line: "There's something about being around you that seems to calm the murderer inside me."
