Poignant storytelling, apt casting, acting and great editing!
ssvikas4 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Romance and relationships has been the preferred theme for world cinema for years. While most mainstream commercial Bollywood flicks succumb to a song and dance routine, the alternate and regional cinema that has still been holding the fort for good stories. Antaheen from the East, the National Award Winner of last year is one of those.

Rahul Bose plays Abhik, a dutiful IPS officer and a fitness freak who seeks an emotional escapade in cyberspace as he chats with journalist Brinda (Radhika Apte), both using pseudonyms. Following an arms haul, Brinda seeks an interview with Abhik who denies it while blaming the media on sensationalizing issues. The cyber lovers don't hit off well in real life initially but go on to discover each other's better side.

Cyber lovers and acrimonious real life selves are not new to filmdom. The Tom Hanks – Meg Ryan starrer 'You've Got Mail' immortalized more than a decade ago, when people actually preferred pseudonyms vis-à-vis today's relatively realistic interactions over Facebook or Skype. While the trend-setter had a romantic ending, the lesser known film makers of 'Antaheen' preferred to turn this tragic, and stayed true to its title.

Complementing the protagonists, the tale of endless search is told through its peripheral characters too. Sharmila Tagore plays a single woman who lives in her own world and has brought up her orphaned nephew Abhik. Kalyan Ray, Abhik's wise and middle aged cousin and Aparna Sen play an estranged couple who still manage to keep their love alive. Meeta Vasisht plays the scorned wife of the rich antagonist Mehra.

One couldn't have asked more from its cast chosen well and have played it to perfection. Be it the brainy and honest cop, a feisty but sweet Journo, a lone caretaker aunt, the sophisticated builder with a hint of an evil streak, the estranged urban middle aged couple whose love seems to grow when apart or the wife who hasn't forgiven her husband for the accidental death of her daughter years ago!

A possible irritant though are rampant product placements. There is nothing subtle about advertisers yelling from the rooftops selling include a cellular network, wireless broadband, internet trading, portfolio management service, a soft drink and a shampoo! Can't help but pity the small budgets that force filmmakers into such compromises.

Editing takes the centerpiece here. You can hardly find a scene that can be argued out of its place. The use of voice-over is clean and simply pulled out of conversations than spoken thoughts. Sound could have definitely been improved with sync-sound adding a realistic touch. Camera work though is keeps the locales mundane and has repeated shots of indoors and cityscapes. Blame it all on smaller budgets arty flicks.

To top it all, the climax has the desired effect of a sense of void; most recent parallel seen in 'Bridge to Terabithia'. If you are in a mood for appreciating a well made movie, be sure to check this one out. With subtitled versions easily available, appreciating regional cinema just became easier! So, go ahead and pick up the DVD!

Beautiful. For me, the movie was like an evening sky, slowly changing its colours and finally getting dark. A well scripted and directed movie with an amazing cast.

lyrical ode to unfulfilled relationships..
mysonamartya28 December 2015
Antaheen is based on a story of the director Aniruddha Roy Choudhury. It shows urban life in a metro like Kolkata where relationships develop online, love and bonding exist even though couples live separately, and where longing, greed, journalistic scoop, parties and tragedies coalesce into an integrated whole. The film has a lyrical quality about it, and veterans like Aparna Sen and Sharmila Tagore are at their ravishing best.

In the film Aparna and Kalyan Ray play a couple who live separately. Aparna is an editor in a publishing house, while Kalyan is immersed in his own cushy life in Mumbai devouring books and downing fine wine. Radhika Apte plays a TV journalist on the lookout for sensational stories. She meets the cop (Rahul Bose) in a party and a relationship develops between them. There is an online angle to their relationship as well. The character of the cop (Rahul Bose) appears a bit too poetic for a cop.

The title of the film can be attributed to the 'endless wait' of some of the principal characters for their desires and longings to come to fruition. Like the character of Pishima (Sharmila Tagore) of the cop who waits for the unknown phone caller with whom she started a conversational relationship with an inkling of it having the potential of becoming a full blown one. Even the relationship of Aparna and Kalyan, quite affectionate at times, doesn't head towards reconciliation. As Rahul Bose's character says in the film "Possibly his brother Kalyan & sister-in-law Aparna aren't too sure of what they want from the relationship." Moreover, towards the end with the tragedy that transpired, would Rahul now wait endlessly for a reunion in after-life with his paramour?

The supporting cast includes Mita Vashisht, Arindam Sil and others.

A very well weaved movie!
chandrachur-das18 October 2009
Its a classic. Top notch direction. Honestly I never knew this director. But as I watched this movie I wanted to know more about him. There are a very few directors whose second movie shows so much maturity. The movie circles around the upper middle class section of Kolkata. Some scenes amazingly depicts reality. The characters oh my God! are awesomely casted. Aparna Sen as usual brilliant, Rahul Bose with his Bengali accent has done an excellent job, Radhika Apte superb, Kalyan has really touched my heart with his amazing screen presence and as if the character he played is only made for him, Sharlmila Tagore awesome. Well I tell you the beauty of Kolkata is with its people and very practically you will meet some of them in this movie.

Slumdog de glorified
sundeepmukherjee200030 January 2009
Just back from Antaheen.

A two hour neat poetry on celluloid, with sweetness emphasized by Rahul, Radhika, Aparna-Kalyan duo, Sharmila and the rest of the crew.

If you like poetry then its the movie for you.

Nice direction and just being opposite to Slumdog, it glorified the beauty of Kolkata.

The music is gorgeously good and among the best (if not the best of all times) in recent times Bengali movies.

Shreya's voice is really becoming haunting with every passing day. A 10/10 overall.

A movie that will move you. A 10/10 In all respects. FLAWLESS.

Feeble and Unrealistic Plot
salehinrafi5 March 2022
The movie is not up to the mark as an art film. The storyline is very feeble. The message behind the so called "urban" love in the movie is so unrealistic and absurd. An art film should be a mirror of human life not a mirage of 'distant' love.
