Actress Blythe Gilio first caught the attention of director Simon Pennekamp, and landed the role of Megan because she had the loudest voice in the audition room.
Production Designer Mariah Mills built a massive VCR model out of several smaller VCRs, in order to place the camera "inside the VCR."
Because the film was shot in April, in Chicago, the ground was too cold for actor Tyler Porter to dig a hole in. Instead, construction coordinator Emily F. Adams built an entire raised set of the interior of the shed (with a pre-dug hole in the floor) that the character Doug could uncover.
The original screenplay by Michael Johnson had Doug throwing the VCR into the river. For locations purposes, the idea of the shed was conceived.
All the interiors were actually a built set, assembled by round-the-clock construction crews. The only time the camera went on location was for the exteriors (i.e. when Luke gets ice cream.)
