Director Li Liming and action co-ordinator Sun Fe tell the story of a younger Ip Man (Zhao Wenhao). Just arriving in Hong Kong for college, he and all of his classmates are held for ransom by a gang leader named Ma Long (Mu Feng-bin) who just so happens to be his old mentor. Now, Ip Man finds himself in the middle of a dangerous conspiracy that involves local authorities and the last person he would ever expect to be evil.
This is not based in any history, unlike the Donnie Yen and Wilson Yip films. Instead, it's just an action movie cashing in on the Ip Man name. Then again, martial arts movies have been doing that for years. What it's all about is just how good the fights are.
Ma only became a villain because of the corruption of British colonial rule. They didn't give him the justice he sought, so he has turned his grief into ruining the lives of those in power, even if he has to go through their children to do it. Ip Man learned the difference between right and wrong from Ma, but now, all Ma believes in is being the strongest.
As you can imagine, Ip Man is going to have to defeat every one of Ma's men and then battle the man he once bowed to.
