War Horse
Directed by: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis
Running Time: 2 hrs 26 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: December 25, 2011
Plot: A young man (Irvine) and his horse serve separately during World War I. As the battle takes over the land, the horse encounters many different leaders.
Who’S It For?: Even though it depicts Wwi, War Horse offers a heavily family-friendly presentation of such events. Those who try to keep up with Oscar predictions would be smart to at least consider catching War Horse, a movie bound to pick up some nominations in the next few weeks.
Overall
Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is a movie that shines, in both positive and negative ways. If the movie were to be made into a concrete thing, it would be a fancy new memorial dedicated to all soldiers of the world, represented by a...

Variety critic Leslie Felperin responded to her son's diagnosis by watching every movie about autism she could find
Some parents go into understandable denial when confronted with the evidence that their child is on the autism spectrum, and some become consumed with a zealous need to seek a cure or ameliorate the symptoms with therapies. Given my profession, my way of dealing with our three-year-old son's diagnosis of an autistic spectrum condition (Asc) has been to try and understand the condition as best I could through reading books and watching movies about people with autism. So for the last two years, my husband Tom and I have been working our way – frequently in tears, sometimes laughing with recognition – through as many features and documentaries about people with the condition as we could source. It seems to me from where I'm sitting (on the sofa and in the cinemas) that there are far more,...

Rating (out of 5): **
It's difficult to avoid comparisons between A Mother's Courage (originally titled The Sunshine Boy) with The Horse Boy (originally titled Over the Hills and Far Away) another recent autobiographical documentary on the stress put on families dealing with Autism. With Horse Boy, Rupert Isaacson documented his family's trip from their cozy Texas suburb to the far-flung provinces of Mongolia to seek shamanic treatments from reindeer herders. Fridrik Thor Fridriksson's Courage centers on Margret Dagmar Ericsdottirs, an Icelandic women from a similarly privileged family who travels to the States to visit different schools and individual specialists in the field of Autism. Their 8 year old son Kaley has gone through many experimental treatments with little results and has now aged past the point of most effective interventions.

On Tuesday, May 11, The Horse Boy airs nationally 10pm Edt on the PBS series Independent Lens. The Horse Boy is a film about a dad (Rupert Isaacson) and a mom (Kristin Neff ) who are trying to do what hundreds of thousands of families in America do every day - search for a way to reach their child with autism. Only, we don't look so good doing it and we usually stay pretty close to home. Rupert is a past professional horse trainer, writer and journalist as well as a human rights advocate for tribal peoples. Rupert's wife and Rowan's mother, Kristin, is a tenured professor of psychology, and has been a practicing Buddhist for more than 10 years. She is well known for her researches into the Buddhist concept of self-compassion and its correlation with positive...

Inspirational, feel-good, pro-active, holistic goodness simply fires out of The Horse Boy (Zeitgeist Films) like jets of super-soaker tear-water, as it is a documentary made by an autistic boy's parents about their strenuous, globetrotting attempt at find a mystical "cure." Who could be cynical? The patience and fortitude at work in the lives of Brit journalist Rupert Isaacson and psych prof Kristin Neff as they handle their gorgeous but seriously impaired son Rowan is redoubtable, and once Rowan communes with a horse and Isaacson indulges in fond memories of shamanistic cures he witnessed in Africa, one can hardly blame the family for packing the kid up and taking him to the one spot on the globe where horses and shamanism traditionally entwine: Mongolia.

Crazy Heart: Perhaps it's the tool of the truly lazy critic to merely point to another movie as basis for describing the movie he's currently reviewing, but it's damn near impossible not to draw parallels between Scott Cooper's Crazy Heart and Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler. The comparison isn't just apt thematically, but reflective of the awards season: it'll get a best actor nomination for the lead and a deserving best song nomination. It's a tried and true song we've all heard before: an old salt rumbling on the road, clinging to a life of desperation and destructive behavior because it's the only one he knows, finding new loves and trying to reclaim old lives, que sera serve me a beer back. And I don't offer that up as a negative; truth be told, there's a reason why it's a popular seed from which to sprout a story.

Wichita — The board of directors for the Wichita Association for Motion Picture Arts (Wampa) has officially changed the organization’s name to the Tallgrass Film Association.
The Tallgrass Film Association was founded as Wampa in 2003 by the late Timothy Gruver as the parent organization of the Tallgrass Film Festival. It is a non-profit 501(c)3 arts organization dedicated to entertaining and enlightening audiences from America’s Heartland. Through the festival, Third Thursday Film Series, Cinema Al Fresco Series, the Tallgrass Filmmaker Academy, and Special Screenings, the Tallgrass Film Association spotlights the city’s venues, cultural attractions and artistic communities.
The name was changed for several reasons.
First, the Wichita Association for Motion Picture Arts is a mouthful and always has to be followed with “the organization that puts on the Tallgrass Film Festival” for it to have any meaning with the general public.
Second, this will be a springboard for a...

Texas Independence Day is March 2, and local PBS station Klru will commemorate the day with "Texas Independents' Day," an event involving several local filmmakers whose work has reached a national audience. For the first time, three Austin-based projects have been selected for this season of the PBS Emmy-award winning series Independent Lens: The Eyes of Me (my review), Sunshine (pictured above) and The Horse Boy (my review). All three films premiered in the Lone Star States category at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival. PBS estimates that 2 million viewers will tune in to Independent Lens this year.

The Horse Boy
Directed by: Michel O. Scott

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: Unrated
Release Date: December 11, 2009
Plot: A professional filmmaker and his wife travel to Mongolia in the hopes of healing their autistic son.
Who’S It For? You don’t have to be a hippie or mystic to enjoy this film, really anyone with a heart will enjoy it.
Expectations: I’m a realist, or maybe a cynic. I don’t believe that magic can cure disease. But I am interested in autism and I love documentaries so I was hoping for something good.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Rupert Isaacson as himself: Isaacson does double duty as both the narrator of the film and one of its subjects. He’s the father of Rowan, the child who’s at the center of the film. He speaks in a fancy British accent and...

Roughly one out of every ninety children are born with autism. Approximately one percent of children in the United States, between the ages of 3 and 17, have an autism spectrum disorder. Between 1-1.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder. These are staggering statistics, especially considering such a prevalent disorder receives less that 5% of private research funding of other less common disorders and diseases.
My intention for sharing these statistics is not to condemn anyone, but merely to point out the vastness of the population living with some form of autism. This is a disorder that is still relatively unknown to us in terms of it’s cause and ultimately it’s place within our society and humanity. Many cling to the idea that autism is strictly a bad thing, a disease, but many others remain open to the possibility that autism isn’t a disease so much as a...

We have the trailer in from Zeitgeist Films' "The Horse Boy" documentary. The Michel Orion Scott film opens in limited areas on September 11th. This marks Scott's first film after serving in the art department for 2007's "Kabluey" and as a production assistant on 2006's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning." How far would you travel to heal someone you love? An intensely personal yet epic spiritual journey, The Horse Boy follows one Texas couple and their autistic son as they trek on horseback through Outer Mongolia in a desperate attempt to treat his condition with shamanic healing. When two-year-old Rowan was diagnosed with autism, Rupert Isaacson and his wife Kristin Neff..

- I imagine that harnessing a wild animal and letting special needs children ride them falls in the less obvious area of animal exploitation, I also imagine that trekking to the other end of the world to treat your child is perhaps a more heroic act than accepting the same fate reserved for many children that become isolated by autism. With a tagline that reads "a father's quest to heal his son" Zeitgeist have secured the North American rights to what I imagine is a hopeful, feel-good documentary about facing of adversity. The doc preemed at the recent Sundance film festival. Re-baptized with a new title matching the one from the book which will receive a paperback release Fall at the same time as the doc, The Horse Boy (a.k.a Over the Hills and Far Away), this chronicles Rowan and his family’s journey across this vast, wild landscape.
