Bill Withers was my first true idol. His debut album, Just As I Am, came out in May 1971, four months after I was born. When I first heard his songs, either on the radio or on my dad’s records, I knew that I was hearing something different. His music and his vocals were as down-to-earth as the earth itself. Too often, black artists get classified as otherworldly talents (Michael Jackson, Prince) or gritty, up-from-the-streets hustlers who are barely overcoming animal instincts (too many to name). Withers was something else: a black everyman,...

If you are a fan of documentary film then Damani Baker’s name should be immediately familiar to you as one-half of the directing team on “Still Bill,” the 2009 feature length doc on legendary soul music singer Bill Withers and easily one of the best music-based documentaries of the last decade. On a whole his career spans documentaries, music videos, museum installations and advertisements and he is also an alum of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces in Independent Film” But despite his focus on the work of others, as often occurs, it’s the most personal projects that take on the greatest significance. Reflecting and retracing his family’s exploits in early 1980’s revolutionary...

In today's helping of TV snacks, ABC is staffing up its primetime medical dramas, RuPaul's ratings are no drag and Showtime celebrates Black History Month.
Movie actress Nancy Travis is returning to ABC, but not on "Desperate Housewives" again. She'll be checking into "Grey's Anatomy" as a patient in Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) Alzheimer's clinical trials, but it's her parenting skills that will be examined. [TV Guide]
He played Miranda's (Cynthia Nixon) husband, Steve, in the "Sex and the City" franchise and now David Eigenberg is going to make an unusual request on ABC's "Private Practice" when he guests as the husband of one of Addison's (Kate Walsh) patients. [TV Guide]
The ratings for Monday's (Jan. 24) Season 3 premiere of "RuPaul's Drag Race" was everything but a drag for Logo with 302,000 people tuning in. It showed a 33% increase over Season 2's premiere and it was the highest rated show for the network since Season 2's "Rpdr" finale episode.

Many of you may already have heard from Tambay about a new film festival in Brooklyn, NY that both he and I are curators for – ActNow: New Voices in Black Cinema festival (February 4-9).
Now some argue: Who needs another film festival? And to a degree that’s true. But this festival is an extension of our existing quarterly screening series of the same name at BAMcinématek in which we’ve shown Idris Elba’s Legacy, for the first time in the USA outside of the festival circuit, the Bill Withers documentary Still Bill, well before it gained more prominence at bigger venues like IFC Cinemas, and most recently the wonderful Clark Johnson starring indie Nurse.Fighter.Boy

The Alamo Guide
for March 4th, 2010
Ah March… the sun is shining, the trees are greening and people from all over the world are about to invade our fair city for SXSW and give us their money. You gotta love the few weeks of spring we get in Texas. Pretty soon it’s going to be hot as balls. Sure, it’ll drop down to 35 probably at some point, but worry not, it’ll be 80 the next day.If you haven’t been into the theater since last week, we put our new Spring Menu Specials up! They are crazy tasty, and come highly recommended from everyone at Alamo HQ. Some of those specials are for the big opener this weekend, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland In 3D! I’ve loved Tim Burton for years, and I love Alamo feasts, so you can find me at the Alice Five-course Feast next Wednesday.

Over 85 films will be filing through arthouses and multiplexes between now and the end of April, but nearly triple that number will be accessible from the comfort of home, whether it's on demand, online or on DVD. Here's what will be hitting televisions, computer screens, Netflix queues and store shelves this spring.

Once you get through the masterful six-hour "Red Riding Trilogy" currently available on demand through May, IFC Films and their Sundance Selects label have quite the collection of festival favorites available to beam directly onto your TV in the next few months. If you live in New York, and, like me, you’re not at all interested in seeing the latest studio releases – notably Mel Gibson’s return, channeling Charles Bronson in Edge Of Darkness, and the vanilla romcom, When In Rome – then instead head over to IFC theatres in the Village, and check out these 2 films if you haven’t already (both have been previously featured on this site, by the way):
Still Bill – a critically acclaimed documentary look at the life, relationships, and of course the music of the legend that is Bill Withers – the highly regarded, yet extremely reclusive singer and writer of such classics as Lean On Me, Just The Two Of Us and Ain’t No Sunshine.
Off And Running – a fascinating story of an adopted African-American teen raised by lesbian Jewish parents in Brooklyn.
Below are trailers for both feature films; first, Still Bill,...

Hope For Haiti Now album

While earthquake relief in Haiti was the reason for and inspiration behind "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief," there's no question that it featured some amazing, one-of-a-kind musical performances.
The songs chosen by most of the artists had a thematic connection to the occasion, and the soaring lyrics delivered by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Mary J. Blige and Justin Timberlake underlined the hope for the country that's coming from around the world. The songs' unplugged, often gentle renditions underscored the seriousness of the situation.
George Clooney helped organize the event, and his hope is that the songs carry the event beyond the evening and into the following weeks, months and years.

Country and rock and roll collided Friday (January 22) when Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban and Kid Rock joined forces to perform the hit song "Lean on Me" during MTV's "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief."
Written by Bill Withers and released in 1972 on his second album Still Bill, "Lean on Me" was inspired by Withers' small-town upbringing in the mining community of Slab Fork, West Virginia — a close-knit atmosphere Withers pined for after moving to L.A. The song hit #1 on July 8, 1972, and remained on the charts for 19 weeks. In 2004, the song was ranked #205 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.

Is it me, or has this year seen a relative barrage of music documentaries featuring legendary black music makers from the 60s/70s? Am I Black Enough For You? (Billy Paul), Still Bill (Bill Withers), Soul Power (Various artists including James Brown)… Well, now here come two more, both set for release early next year and both about P-Funk maestro, Sly Stone of Everyday People and Family Affair fame.
And, if that isn’t enough, you can get even higher with Sly with the announcement today that he’s signed a deal with Cleopatra Records to release a new album early next year too! Not bad for a sexagenarian with a very sex, drugs and rock n roll history!
Back to the documentary films, in alphabetical order, we have Coming Back For More and Higher: The Story of Sly Stone.
Coming Back For More seems to be the second Sly Stone...

"Paranormal Activity" has now made more than $85 million thanks to moviegoers literally demanding to see the low-budget horror flick in their city. And while grassroots promotional campaigns are nothing new in the film industry, this recent success is sure to spur more elaborate strategies from the studios. Well MTV isn't going to wait for them, especially with so many fine films out there that are simply overlooked beneath the crush of remakes and sequels. So every week I'll be spotlighting a few titles opening in limited release that are worthy of your time.

The South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival on Thursday announced the short-film lineup for this year's fest, which runs March 13-21 in Austin, Texas.
A total of 127 shorts, selected from 2,071 submissions, will screen at the festival in eight categories. Music videos and high school shorts will screen as well.
"We're always very proud of our shorts programs," film conference and festival producer Janet Pierson said. "Not only are they carefully curated with an eye towards a cohesive and entertaining 90-minute program, but we feel shorts provide an extremely fertile ground to discover new filmmaking talent."
Several features were added to the full lineup released last week, including Alex Vlack's Bill Withers documentary "Still Bill," Barbara Kopple's Woodstock work "My Generation," Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn's rockumentary "Iron Maiden: Flight 666" and Marc Webb's fictional feature "500 Days of Summer," starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
