Inconsistent
oalpertopcu11 April 2021
Story telling is ok. Unfortunately, main character has some of the worst make up I've ever seen since 1990s. It's hard to understand why they didn't cast someone else for the old version of her. It looks cheap and takes the quality of entire movie down.

Entire film feels like a cheap version of 'forrest gump'

Rest of the movie is ok.

Unfortunately Disappointing
gokselll12 April 2021
The movie is based on the original text of a muchly appreciated theatre play staged in 1999, written by Yilmaz Erdogan, a succesfull name of cinema and theatre world in Turkey.

Despite basing on a text succeded in the past, the movie unfortunately fails articulating a cinematic langue by adapting the theatrical scenario. Hence, the audience faces to a theatre play on the screen trying but failing to be a movie.

The half-written story
AJ_McAninch24 April 2021
The Ecem Erkek is excellent, but her character swings between charming and annoying. The cast is a mixed bag of competent and terrible acting. I almost stopped watching, but I stayed with it and was rewarded with the beautiful "half-written story that lasts a lifetime." Even though it was predictable, for I have lived that story as well, it was handled gently and lovingly. That line alone will resonate with me personally. I also loved the ending, sweet and lovely. I have seen fireflies, especially in my childhood, but I am told they still magically appear in secret places they have slipped away to in order to escape the carelessness of humans.

I did not expect that,
berk_ozenc12 April 2021
I watched the movie with zero expectations, and I was happy. Despite terrible CGI and make-up, it was a great movie. It entertained and made me sad at the same time. The first thirty minutes of the film seem very useless to plot, and nothing really goes on. It had a comedy vibe, but nothing was funny. Except for Ecem Erkek, she was funny. I really liked her performance.

The movie opens like a flower while you watch it and becomes much more meaningful. However, character development is weak. Much thing goes on around Gülseren, and only in the last scenes, we see a change in her character. I think the film could have been much better, but it is still a good movie to watch.

Warning: Spoilers
It is not enjoyable to watch the new version after watching the play. You already know all the details of the story. They just adapted some places to the present day. For example, a religious uncle became a politician in the first version, he is experiencing enlightenment here and withdraws from worldly affairs. Then, in the first version, they were making fun of the cinci teacher and the closed women. In this version, they don't talk about closed women at all, they still say I am a hafiz or something. I think the AKP effect. :)

Not impressed
Fingolfin2314 April 2021
Don't waste your time. I was expecting a nice movie but it's just the main character's acting show. Other than that there is nothing you enjoy in the movie.

Movie without content
recask20 April 2021
The actors, scenes, atmosphere are magnificently. But the movie itself and the content is realy empty. There is no story and the movie is very Boring. There is not a single 'comic' scene. I don't understand why this movie is categorized as a comedy.

A cliché movie of yilmaz erdogan with his, so to speak, comunist scenes. It is becoming very boring.

Blah! Just blah!
ijeomas18 April 2021
I kept watching waiting for the main character to grow up and do something with her life. Needless to say she never does. She is a sporadic, spoiled, disorganized mess of a person with no focus and no goals in life. I wish the movie had focused on the other characters or maybe the turmoil during that time. Her uncles for example were on opposite sides of the political fence, would have been a lot better if they were more than supporting roles. The entire story focuses on Gülseren who is just lost and out of order with no potential at all. She thinks everything is a joke or tries to make serious situations a joke with her poor idea of comedy. My guess is the writer wanted to present a person with mental health issues that were never identified nor treated.

Actings are horrible:))) I can't believe those talented humorous theater players are playing so artificial ! Unrealistic characters unrealistic decorations and outfits. Waste of time to watch!

"Life is more difficult for those who are intelligent."
RosanaBotafogo15 April 2021
Have You Seen Fireflies? Yes, they are beautiful and threatened with extinction, as cute and charming as the film, but beware, strong triggers, loneliness, resilience, exaggerated machismo of a strongly patriarchal society, it hurts deep inside the soul, a beautiful and intensely sad film... The context history and evolution from 1960 to the present day and every revolution, excellent film cloth ... "Life is more difficult for those who are intelligent."

A well-known story for Turkish theater lovers. The scenario was processed successfully. Congratulations to the whole team. A performance that deserves an award from Ecem Erkek.

Watch and form your own opinion
fulyacankaya12 April 2021
There are and will be many negative reviews. This is mainly because the film is based on a play, which was very successful in its time (with different actors). However, the film neither intends to be better than the play nor to replace it. It is simply a play in its own right, which should be considered on its own merits and not compared to the original play. Therefore, I recommend everyone to watch the film and form their own opinion.

A masterpiece *
sleepinglibrary6 June 2021
One of the best movies I've seen in a while. Wished that there was more development on the political history of turkey as the movie never immersed on the historical events of turkey. Character development on some of the protagonists in the movie would have helped, like the main protagonists uncle for example, would have helped. But other than that - Quite a moving story, One that I would watch again.

Theater play as a movie
ardacetinkaya-588686 August 2021
People watching this as a typical movie might be upset because the technique is still the original play style which I loved the change of watching sth different. Great acting with great history overlay and overall a nice movie. Would recommend.

Enchanting!
gailmcwt27 April 2021
Wonderfully written, the combination of comedy, sadness, youth and older generation was enchanting. It was fascinating to see the memoirs of the main character; the simplicity of it was perfect.

Actors, setting and the photography is amazing.

Safety Pin
faer_kr9 April 2021
A turkish drama It is about a Muslim woman ahead of the time of her who sees fireflies and narrates her entire life story through each and every one of her stages.

Quality.

Entertaining With emotional moments, light happy and warm moments.

Some effects are not the best and at times the makeup does not help but the story makes up for it.

It has two or three moments that will make you shed a tear.

The performances are in place.

Talk about the family and its traditions. On the education of those who are different and a marvelously shaped outdated system, on the social struggles of a time and space in Turkey, on religious and ideological fanaticism, on freedom, on the value of women in such a macho culture.

It makes you feel empathized with the main character and the way she sees life.

Safety pin.

Good film
ascakmak-4888418 April 2021
Beautiful characters, great acting. The most pleasant period film as the film made with turkey.

The turkey's political era, the film shows that how people's lives change. I guess the reason it is so successful is that it is a part of everyone's life.
