this wasn't that bad
MairegChernet20 April 2009
420 wasn't really bad. Especially compared with other season seven episodes, this wasn't very bad at all.

After a couple of rather lame episodes, 420 revives the season as Brian goes out to legalize marijuana.

One striking feature of this episode is the musical, which hasn't been really used very well since the shipoopi episode.

Another feature of the episode that has improved since the last couple of episodes is the length of the flashbacks and the cutaway gags.

Dialogues are also quick and funny. Although still flawed, this episode is an improvement from the last ones

Song is great, Quagmire's plot line is awful
pledgerock29 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the Bag of Weed song but Peter killing Quagmire's cat was not funny at all and completely unnecessary. Had nothing to do with anything else and then we move right to something totally different. Just violent and unfunny.

The scene with Tom and Diane and Olly was HILARIOUS. "How's the weather Olly?" "Not too bad"

Well, at least the song was nice...

Warning: Spoilers
...unlike everything else. I really can't say what kept me watching after it ended. This time the story revolves around Brian trying to legalize marijuana. The jokes were below average, and there was nothing funny about Peter killing Quagmires cat (the fact that he later took fifty dollars from him and said that he killed it was just a terrible way to end an episode). Maybe it was a little bit funny when Stewie said that he doesn't have to wear clothes when he was asked to give Brian a urine sample (also, there were a few more hints that he is homosexual, but none of them were particularly funny).

Better luck next time, and keep up the good songs.

Animal abuse killed the whole episode for me....
Reckno6424 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As about 15 when I first saw this episode, and the only part that stuck out to me was the "cat murdering scene". I forgot literally the whole rest of the episode because that one scene angered me so much. WHO in their right mind would find ANIMAL ABUSE a good idea for comedy?! The only people that will ever find such horror "funny" are psychopaths and sociopaths. There is nothing funny about that scene, and it has forever traumatized me because I had the misfortune of watching it. I have never seen it since, nor will I ever see it again.

Literally the whole rest of the episode is about legalizing pot, and that's fine I guess, but none of it even mattered. The moment I saw that brutal scene at the beginning I turned off the TV (or almost did. Somehow I got through the whole episode but again, it didn't matter. I was too pissed about that one scene).

Not sure if my review will mean much to anyone since it's more a commentary on one horrible joke that should NEVER EVER HAVE BEEN GREENLIT IN THE FIRST PLACE. But I just had to say it. That one "joke" was so deplorable it not only ruined the whole episode, it pretty much ruined the whole show for me. Never again did I see Family Guy in the funny yet dark sense that I had before. It's just dark shock humor nowadays, and I think this was one of IF NOT the first episode to really delve into that kind of tripe.

Shame on whoever wrote that "joke". 1/10, but I'd give a 0/10 if I could......

It's understandable to use your characters as mouthpieces, but this was seriously preachy!
TOMNEL21 April 2009
When you have writers, they are obviously going to be people with opinions. Most shows, especially those that serve as social commentary (Family Guy, South Park, The Simpsons) are going to express those opinions loud and clear, but, rarely are they as preachy as this, Seth MacFarlane's rationale of why marijuana should be legalized. It's as preachy as one of those old after school specials, but with the morals reversed.

Quagmire gets a new cat, and it changes him. Peter, Cleaveland, Joe and Brian go in to pull a prank on Quagmire's cat, but Peter ends up killing it. On the way back from disposing the cat, Peter is pulled over and Brian is caught with weed. Brian preaches to the man, and with Stewie's help gets pot legalized. Peter and Lois's dad Carter try to make an anti-pot campaign meanwhile. Mediocrity ensues.

Brian in recent years seems to have become, more than any other character, the mouthpiece for the writers. Brian makes some valid points, but every episode where Brian fights for or against something just seems like the writers hiding behind this character. Unlike in South Park, there is no cleverness involved in proving a point. Instead, it's as though someone is just telling us why something should be, and never is the opposite viewpoint given. This show, especially this episode, are becoming like Michael Moore documentaries. They have the passion behind them, but never any opposite views, and this episode just isn't very funny anyway.

"Family Guy" is a one sided show, and this episode shows how one sided it really is. Whether or not you're for the legalization of marijuana, you can still see how preachy this episode is. Maybe Mr. MacFarlane should release a documentary on why this issue is important to him instead of putting fans of his series through episodes like this.

My rating: * 1/2 out of ****. 30 mins. TV14

A Pot-Smoker's Dream, A Normal Person's Mediocre Comedy.
eriktherandom3 August 2009
Can't say I really cared for this episode. Season 7 isn't exactly their best, there is a few episodes, but this one really, like the Atheism one, overboard with political viewpoints. I miss the days when Family Guy wasn't so political based. Brian is just Seth in character, voicing opinions that nobody really cares to hear. Family Guy always has mocked religion and such, but lately it's been a little overboard.

Basically in this episode, Bryan crusades to get pot legalized. An intellectual such as himself should have seen the dangers in having it, but the idea is that behind the character is an idiot who wants his political viewpoints heard.

The ending was a bit crappy, because it's just a way of closing out the deal and having everything return to normal.

The only reason people really cared for this episode, was because the song and most pot users tend to love something that sticks up for something they like though the rest of us look and think it's stupid.

The beginning of Family Guy's descent into drug-level awfulness.
adampkalb15 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Peter and Carter were outright despicable in this episode and they never get in trouble. It really angers me off to see Brian get arrested for something as minor as pot when the same cops let Peter get off scot-free when they knew he was getting rid of a cat he murdered. I looked up some information and it's true that weed is less harmful than marajuana, but I still don't think it should be legalized. Carter wants to make pot illegal again only because he's making less money. The worst part is that he broke his promise to Brian and didn't hold up his end of the deal to sell Brian's novel. And Peter got away with killing Quagmire's cat in the end. This episode also never wants to tell us why pot is bad and should be illegal, because the scene skips to the last line of Brian's song that made pot illegal again.

Trash, and so peachy even for Family Guy, I thought they hated preaching l
OhDearireMeMate20 November 2021
First we get Peter killing quagmires cat.. ok wow what kind of friend is he? Sure he is supposed to be mentallnretarted but honestly this is too far. Season 7 started of decent but went downhill quick no wonder Seth said he wanted to end family guy at this point.

Why aren't Peter and his friends happy for quagmire? They should be happy he isn't sex obsessed anymore, and listing after little kids too coming like Herbert a bit.

He was genuinely happy, but no he doesn't deserve happiness, same thing they did to joe when he got kegs (although he was acting like a jerk).

Anyway here comes Brian trying to get weed legalised, yeah so we can all be red eyed potheads not thinking straight with cancers and brain damage noice.

Pretty sure Seth was smoking pot withh this one.

Animal abuse isn't funny and the quality of the episode does not make up for the fact
laetialawtom26 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The plot for this episode centres around Brian wanting to legalise weed, which in my opinion, is a topic that's been talked to death already. It isn't really interesting unless you're someone who's very passionate about smoking marijuana. Then towards the end of the episode, his issue with weed not being legalised is dropped and suddenly isn't an issue anymore, despite the fact that he spent most of the episode droning on about it. Some positives: the song was good and there were a couple of funny jokes. However, the bit with Peter killing Quagmire's cat was bad enough to bring down the quality of the whole episode. I think if it had been a dog, the reviews on this episode would be a lot less favourable. The problem with Family Guy, is that it tends to teeter on the line between funny or disgusting; and it's usually the latter. It's as if the writers think adding scenes with people committing shocking and/or awful acts automatically equates to comedy. It seems they missed the memo that offensive jokes need to be clever in order to be funny.

I cannot support animal abuse
salihturhanst10 January 2024
Regardless of the content of this episode and other episodes, the cat scene completely changed my perspective on Family Guy and disgusted me.

I now think it's ridiculous and for idiots. I thought this was a smart show but now it's not.

It's really stupid to hurt animals and think it's funny.

In general, it is a very aggressive show. I couldn't say it was a good show.

Imagine what would happen if a little child saw this. Would you let your own children watch it?

Please don't do something like this again. Despite this, I was very surprised that this episode received such a score. You have to be a psychopath to like this.
