Unique premise but the ending was not it
Movi3DO1 July 2021
I finished this anime in the Winter, but had to wait until now to review because the ending episode just got released.

One of the weirdest anime titles, so it got me interested. At first I thought it was just a normal slice of life based on the poster. The characters looked quite cute. But I got straightened out in the first couple minutes of the first episode.

Similar to Vivy, this is a pretty bloody anime disguised from its beautiful animation. The characters looked very adorable and the fight animation was incredible. Most of the blood from the creatures was in pink color. Definitely one of the best animation I have seen.

The premise was also fascinating. These young middle school girls had to deal with their own trauma and also others'. Because of this, the show became serious and even personal to some people.

The twist was definitely unexpected. While being dark, it became more sci-fi focused, but still an interesting one indeed. So naturally I'm excited to see how they would deal with the final boss. Overall, for the series, it's a solid one. 8/10

And then the social edition came. The first half was a recap of the series, and the second half was the long-awaited conclusion. I was definitely disappointed with that ending. It felt so anticlimactic. The revelation about a character, tho, was quite surprising but good, since it made sense considering her personality. Still, a lot of hype was set up, and the way ended was not satisfying. I honestly wished that there would be another episode to make the conclusion better and more dramatic, as it should. Overall, still love the animation, but not the ending that I wanted. 3.5/10.

Beautiful start but sadly a really bad ending
Halalhabibi694 September 2022
I really liked Wonder Egg Priority. The animation is clean, the premise is unique in a very good way and the characters were likeable while having some awesome designs. Unfortunately in the last 2 or 3 episodes way too many new elements get introduced that kinda neglect what the show actually was about. Then there's the last episode which is an absolute disaster to put it nicely. It isn't just bad it also leaves you very unsatisfied with no real conclusion. I'd still recommend it since most of it is pretty good just be warned that in the end you probably won't be satisfied at all.

Thank you for reading.

Disturbing Yet Hidden Gem
katrinamstone17 January 2021
This psychological horror/drama/fantasy is an unexpected masterful work of art. To plot, animation and execution, this anime delivers. Definitely not for the faint of heart, it touches upon dark themes such as bullying and suicide in a way I haven't seen up until now. First episode and I'm hooked. I recommend it 100%

Very symbolic
shathaalzayyat9 February 2021
This is one of the best new Gen psychological anime. Truly a hidden gem. In an effort to bring back someone they lost, the characters fight to protect victims of suicide due to previous trauma that they (as well as other youth) have experienced including rape, self harm, abuse, and sexual harassment.

The final episode ruined the entire show.
michaeltello2 July 2021
It's still an amazing series that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys watching anime. The animation is just.. breathe taking. I love how they chose a darker color pallet compared to most animes being made nowadays. It really gave the show a very moody, sureal vibe to it, almost as if you're in the same room with all all the characters vs it looking all pastel and washed out. The music is good, voice acting is good too. That last episode just really sucked... however, it's still really worth watching. Apparently the behind the scenes production for the show was a nightmare, which is very unfortunate.. because this anime had SOOOO much potential. And who knows maybe you might like the final episode, it just felt like a completely different show to me and I felt it ignored a lot of super cool interesting things it brought up during episode 11.. anyway, highly recommend, visually stunning, compelling plot, lame ending. 7/10.

Promising start, terrible results

Warning: Spoilers
Wonder Egg Priority is a disappointing grab bag of "woke" sentiment without the smallest shred of understanding. WEP Project wields victims and marginalized groups as a sledgehammer to appeal to anyone willing to watch, just so long as you don't peer beneath the surface. As a result, what starts off as an interesting and evocative exploration of grief, mental illness, and suicide quickly becomes a mansplained fantasy where all girls are just a little crazy and really want to sleep with older men. Especially if those older men are obvious writer stand ins. Then the 14year olds REALLY want to sleep with them. But if you're a 14year old girl who wants to sleep with a 30yr man you probably brought it upon yourself if you got abused and/or killed yourself. Its absolute drivel. However, apologists will scream "look over here" and point at an admittedly well handled plot involving transgender teens. And really, thats the shame of it, for each of the woke tropes WEP Project haphazardly included theres one handled extremely beautifully for every three mansplained away. WEP Project also botched production resulting in delays they tried to hide with an unplanned recap episode in the form of episode 8, which caused other issues including an ultimate delay of the as of yet unreleased final episode, episode 13, which they have since renamed Special Edition for no other reason but to continue to act as if this was planned. A sad end for an otherwise interesting endeavor.

An intensely weird psycho-drama for mature audiences
bill_allison18 February 2022
An intensely weird psychological-drama for mature audiences. Well done but not for everyone. Has very good acting and animation. While asleep, 4 chosen girls can buy an egg containing the soul of a girl who committed suicide. In this dream world, these champions fight the "demons" who drove the girls to kill themselves. When the demon is killed, the dead girl's soul is freed to move on. These young champions are risking their lives, because the injuries in their dreams remain when they awaken. Whenever the story begins to clarify, a new plot twist changes everything.

A must watch for anime fans
hazmipatria2 May 2021
The animation is out of this world. It's very detailed, fluid and colorful 10/10 for animation. The story itself is unique, but i feel like something is missing. I don't know how to describe it but its missing something to get overall 10/10 score.

An anime that touches several delicate subjects. The plot has strong and interesting premises, but by the end the script becomes sloppy and inconclusive.
fciocca16 December 2023
The plot of "Wonder Egg Priority" is completely original, as it is not based on a manga, so it relies completely on the creativity of the screenwriters. This coming-of-age series depicts a group of young teenagers discovering themselves: their personality and their sexual identity, passing through some big changes. However the anime focuses more on traumas, abuses and bullying that the main characters needed to endure. The anime treats these topics in a fairly interesting way: the girls need to face their issues by fighting some monsters which are the visual representation of the aforementioned traumas. During these sequences the story of these girls is unveiled piece by piece, through dialogues or well timed flashbacks, showing some key moments that will give to the audience a cohesive narration. The creators balanced dramatic moments with some funny scenes that dampen the tension a bit. While the show had a really interesting start, towards the end it had a drop in terms of storytelling. I think that the last episode is very inconclusive and it does not give a proper closure to the audience. I personally did not understand what happened in the very last 10 minutes, as the show introduces the concept of multiverse. It was definitely too late to put this element in the plot to elaborate it properly. The special episode that last 47 minutes cannot give a proper closure to the show either, because half of it is dedicated to make a big recap of the entire season (definitely not needed), while the rest of the episode is composed by a bunch of confusing and inconclusive sequences. These generated more questions than answers. The ending was too abstract for me. The last sequence opens the possibility for a second season, that however was not announced yet and by reading the news online, it will most likely never happen. "Wonder Egg Priority" is a creative anime with strong premises that became sloppy and inconclusive. For this reason, my final mark is 6.

ireneth-2022531 May 2022
What an absolut time waste! I gave this a try since the visuals were so good and it seemed to be promising in the first two episodes but I got to episode 9 and could not bare to watch another 4 episodes to finish it. I cannot understand why people give this 10/10 I mean come on..if this is a 10/10 what rating should other animes that are mastepieces get? Consider that..

A colorful, imaginative feast for the eyes
dellddelll2 March 2021
This show is truly one of the best anime to air this season, with it's great characters who each go through amazing character developement, looking at you Rika.

The animation and the overall style are nothing short of breathtaking, there are some really wonderful action sequences. I hope it gets more recognition as it deserves a lot more attention and praise.

Also this show might seem like it is just a go happy go lucky type deal but, you'd be surprised what this show deals with and protrays through the many emotionally heavy backstories and such, plus a ton of symbolisms all over the place for those who like a thoughtful show.

Definitely give it a go.

Breathtaking
kabrianmacias-0147318 February 2021
I'm enjoying this anime for 2 reasons. Reason #1 it speaks to a group of people who dealt with being alienated and bullied by their peers and saying your not alone. Reason #2 it has this dark melancholic and mysterious tone makes it addicting to watch. Only 2 episodes in. Whatever you do don't pass this one up you'll regret it.

A great find!
jerepepe3 April 2021
A very particular anime. All very delicate subjects in an unusual way but it never stops being forced. It perfectly transcends the way of being of the characters and organically.

I don't give it a 10 because it lacks "that thing" that makes me believe it's perfect. Anyway, it was very nice and nice to wait a whole week for a new episode.

It was going so well...
tieguanyin3 November 2022
This show had so much potential. The writing was very good, the characters were so fleshed out. It was so nice seeing characters interact with one another, how they help and hurt each other, their motivations, their insecurities, all of it was there. I would give most of the show a 10/10

But I cannot do that in good conscience give this show a 10/10. Even if almost all the show was perfect, there are pretty glaring problems with the end.

As mentioned before, what made me interested in the show was the complex characters that you found yourself rooting for even with their at times gray morals. So when I have been seeing that for ¾ of the show, it makes it even more jarring when all that is dropped. Characters do not act how you would expect them to based on their past. The in story logic with the magical world and its relation to the real world dissolves. Suddenly the real world is completely foreign. Its a mess.

Genuinely a disaster. I loved it so much. I love 'dark magical girl' shows and this series seemed to take a fresh new approach to the genre. And then it just. Didnt.

Did not answer any of the questions raised by the show in the first half, answered questions I never thought of, and created more questions. I just want them to continue the show as if those last few episodes never happened. Seeing the jarring disparity in quality shows that these people CAN make a great show, but something stopped them from doing so this time.

GREAT ANIME
audreyjgarciadeleondraus8 February 2021
The story is fantastic, It has 3d effects, is also very clean. It also has a bit of shoujo-ai (yuri). I wasn't very interested when I saw the promotional video. When I saw it was awesome, I perceived it very differently and made other different ideas about what it was about.

An anime with striking visuals that presents a distinctive and alluring picture of accepting oneself.
Mysterygeneration13 January 2024
(Suicide, self-harm, and sexual assault are discussed in this review.)

Wonder Egg Priority is an anime with striking visuals that presents a distinctive and alluring picture of accepting oneself. The protagonist of the tale, Ai, is given an egg and led to an underground arcade by an enigmatic voice. After breaking the egg, she finds herself in a bizarre place where her job is to defend a "Wonder" from a "Wonder Killer," a representation of their traumatic past. Ai befriends people who set out on their own quests to vanquish the Wonder Killers. Every character has a unique past and set of beliefs that shape their behavior and help them cope with adversity. Although the anime has a unique and enigmatic idea reminiscent of Ikuhara that aims to overcome problems, it gets more and more troublesome with each episode before collapsing.

Wonder Egg's use of graphics is one of its primary flaws. Paradoxically, the show's entire attraction and the reason I had such high expectations for it was its visuals. But as time went on, it started to seem repetitious, and I came to understand that this was because Wonder Egg's picture is presented in a limited way.

The trauma experienced by the victim is what makes the wonder killers real. There are abusive educators, abusive educators #2, abusive coaches, and so forth. Not only is this a recurring theme, but I also find it troublesome because trauma doesn't always manifest as a single specific incident or aggressor when we discuss delicate subjects like suicide and self-harm in real life.

One of the episodes that centers on Momoe, a tomboyish girl trying to live with society's conceptions of gender and beauty, shows how this topic affects the plot. In keeping with the theme, Momoe's mission to save a non-conforming girl who identified as a boy in that particular episode 'this is fantastic'. It is a very meaningful plot device that gives Momoe the chance to discover something about herself from her contact with someone who is likewise bound by society's expectations. It seems fitting that the entire dream sequence will center on how they embrace themselves in spite of social pressures, I thought.

Wonder Egg is Wonderful
mcrpghk1 April 2021
This will easily go to vote for "Anime of the Year", I love it when I see animes so unique that they generate me a whirlwind of thoughts but that make it difficult to put them in a critique, when it happens I know that the work is special.

From the first episode to the last we have a deep conversation about numerous social problems, not only of Japanese society but of the whole world.

And there is no better theme to work with these subjects than magical girls.

I had countless thoughts and reflections about each scene that this anime showed, and when going into discussion chats, listening to analysis and podcasts the discussion became richer and deeper, because they are subjects so delicate that each person will have their own perspective of looking at them, and the more the conversation expands the better it gets.

The studio put on a show in absolutely everything, every trace of animation, from the simplest and funniest scenes to the uncontrolled action next to the emotional scenes, every detail matters, from a flower in a sweatshirt to a band tied to one arm, the symbolisms can be interpreted in several different ways and yet they wouldn't be enough to give a definitive explanation for each subliminal message.

This is definitely one of those that any fan of animation and good story should put on your list, I wish we had more details about this universe as a whole and how certain things work, but still it's nothing that takes away the beauty of this anime.

Madly disappointing
arcadialisa1 May 2021
This show purely skates by on a flagrant mishandling of mental health, and sensationalizing of suicide. The only thing keeping the show exciting is the shock value it gets from graphic suicide scenes or children being abused. It tries to balance itself between being too edgy and too modest but fails horribly and you're left with shallow stories cut way too short to care about characters who are tragic victims of suicide,

incredible so far, 10/10 if ending holds up.
kingcha-124379 March 2021
So far this has been my pick for anime of the season.

animation 10/10: its strange to say that attack on titan has the second best animation of the season but this show has been nothing short of breathtaking with some of the most lively and fluid movement I've ever seen.

characters 9/10: this will probably turn into a 10/10 by the end of the show but these character's are amazing with wonderful and thoughtful designs. For this to become 10/10 I want to see some more side characters get fleshed out.

plot 8/10: This has been the weakest part of the show while still being great. The thing holding it back has mostly been the lack of an overarching story (as of episode 9 because it looks like this might change) as WEP's instead chosen to look into one character at a time and flesh them out for around 2 episodes. with the way the story seems to be heading this might become another 10/10

impact 9/10: I have not experienced bullying and hope I never will but from people who have been affected by it they say its a very true representation and its hit them really hard. with a current theory that sprang up on reddit this show might be hinting at having one of the biggest gut punch endings ever and if it happens it will be a very sad 10/10.
