"With Great Power Comes Zero Responsibility"
Here's a new superhero movie with a different kind of flavor than you're used to tasting. It's a dark comedy called American Hero, and it stars Stephen Dorff (Blade) as a guy who has telekinetic abilities. Of course, he doesn't use them for anything worthwhile. He's basically just a major screw-up, but after hitting rock bottom, he is looking to change his life and start fighting crime. This actually looks like it could be a fun flick! Here's the synopsis:
Melvin (Stephen Dorff), a reluctant hero who is far from super, has been suppressing his telekinetic powers for years with booze, drugs, and women. In the process, he has failed at practically everything, most of all as a parent to his son. After a brush with death, Melvin decides to use his powers for good and clean up the streets of New Orleans with...

Remake of 70s TV classic gives director Nick Love his first £1m opening, with ParaNorman in hot pursuit; and Anna Karenina settles in for the long haul
The winner
Six years in development and the subject of a radical downsizing from an initial £8m production budget, Nick Love's The Sweeney has finally come up smelling of roses. Eventually made for just £3m – £1m of which was sucked up in development and financing costs – the update on the 1970s TV classic has landed at the top of the UK box office, with a healthy £1.55m, including £433,000 earned on Wednesday and Thursday. Even discounting those preview takings, that's more than Dredd earned from its debut the previous weekend (£1.05m). UK distribution rights alone for Dredd are rumoured to have cost significantly more than The Sweeney's entire production budget.
Even with the preview takings stripped out, The Sweeney has taken nearly...

Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (a.k.a. Plan B) take the lead in the upcoming remake of The Sweeney, and following a new trailer for the action/crime drama last month, we’ve got a new clip to share, featuring a classic one-liner deliverance from Winstone (and also a four-letter word, so you’re advised not to watch this at work).
Nick Love (The Football Factory) is behind the camera, with Hayley Atwell (Captain America) and Damian Lewis (Homeland) completing the support very nicely.

"We're the Sweeney, motherfucker," announces hardened detective Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) to a helpless goon in the opening moments of "The Sweeney," director Nick Love's slickly hollow feature-length take on the '70s ITV series. Jack's confidence overpowers both the villains and the movie itself, which in spite of its competent direction and grave tone mainly functions as an overly typical run-and-gun action vehicle. Winstone manages to invade the trite proceedings with plenty of feisty energy to spare, but even this badass can't defeat a screenplay's worth of clichés. Nevertheless, Love (whose previous credits include "The Firm" and "Outlaw") delivers an eminently watchable procedural, if only because the material never swells in ambition and hugs the rules that dictate its narrative. From the start, it's clear that the brash tactics enacted by Jack and his underlings at the London Flying Squad --...

It’s time for another entry in our regular feature, the poster round-up, and yet again it is another jam-packed update, with new posters for Stitches, Ted, Prometheus, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Babymakers, Excision, Crawl, Anchorman: The Legend Continues, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Mission Blacklist, The Sweeney and The Secret Vilage.
Stitches
Stitches concerns Richard ‘Stitches’ Grindle, a jaded workaday kids’ birthday clown, whose one-liners are witty in a way that’s just not for kids. Stitches falls victim to a fatal party mishap at the hands of a group of particularly nasty children. Years later, the group of now teenagers attend a party at which Stitches is the uninvited guest of honor. Naturally, things take a downward, bloody turn… And yes, the Ross Noble named on the poster Is the British comedian!

Nick Love, well known for writing and directing the likes of The Football Factory and The Firm, is back behind the camera with The Sweeney, based on the original UK ’70s TV programme of the same name.
Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (a.k.a. Plan B) take the lead, with the ever-rising talents of Hayley Atwell and Damian Lewis supporting.
The first trailer made its way online early last month, and now the film’s official Facebook has debuted the first official poster (succeeding the white/blue promo poster that surfaced a while back), and it gets the image of the film across nicely.
I also enjoy that the official website (which currently redirects to Facebook) is www.yourenicked.com. Classic.

Headed to theaters in the UK on May 4, 2012 and DVD on May 21, 2012 from Metrodome Distribution is Kieron Hawkes’s Piggy. From the looks of the trailer the killer wears a pig nose mask. Ah, the smell of burning rubber on a spring afternoon. That'll be the new trailer for crime caper The Sweeney, screaming onto a webpage near you (ie this one) with shouty coppers Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) and George Carter (Ben Drew) to the fore. The big-screen adaptation of the ITV cop show has shifted from the grimy '70s to a more contemporary context, but the coppers' hardball methods look pretty similar. Nick Love is the man behind it and The Firm director looks like he's playing it pretty straight on this evidence. The old Thaw / Waterman double act still looks to have the market cornered for twinkly charm and battered Ford Cortinas, but Drew and Winstone pack plenty of punch too. Expect John 'Trainspotting' Hodges's script to give them regular opportunities to show it. brightcove.createExperiences();The hardbitten London 'tec is ripe for a send up - hunt down...

Following the recent conveyor belt of gritty and dramatic urban films, Anuvahood is a comedic coming of age story that adds a refreshing air of levity to the urban genre. With British cop thriller Blitz out in cinemas today, we caught up with Aidan Gillen to talk about the film, and fighting Jason Statham...
An actor who’s often specialised in bringing flawed, unusual characters to the screen, including mayor Thomas Carcetti in The Wire and Stuart in Queer As Folk, Aidan Gillen may have found his most strange and unsettling role yet in the form of Blitz’s crazed murderer, Barry Weiss. A swaggering outsider with an affection for bright green shades and outlandish violence, Weiss is quite possibly the most memorable antagonist to appear on the big screen this year.
With Blitz out in UK cinemas today, we just had to find out how Gillen prepared for the role, what it was like to fight Jason Statham, and where he got that extraordinary pair of shades.
Did you base the character on anyone in particular? Weiss reminded me of Sid Vicious.

The hip-hop musician says being cast as George Carter alongside Ray Winstone as Jack Regan is a dream come true
The rapper Plan B is the new Dennis Waterman. And he's delighted. The Brit award-winning pop star said his casting in the role of George Carter for the film version of The Sweeney was a "dream come true".
Plan B, real name Ben Drew, will star opposite Ray Winstone, who takes on the role of Jack Regan, the character played by the late John Thaw in the original TV series.
Director Nick Love, known for The Football Factory and The Firm, plans to start shooting the film in the autumn.
The television series The Sweeney, written by Ian Kennedy-Martin, ran from 1975 to 1978 on ITV. It retains a cult following, with the hard-boiled masculinity and political incorrectness of Waterman and Thaw's rule-bending Flying Squad police officers inspiring affection among fans.

First Ben Stiller's Starsky & Hutch, now The Sweeney. Yes, shouty '70s coppers may be long gone but they're definitely not forgotten in movieland. Another telly-to-cinema adaptation of London's crime-fighting finest is winging to the big screen. This time it's got a more honest-to-blinding Blighty feel to it, and judging by this first look at its two stars, a comedy Snoop Dogg cameo is seriously unlikely. The new tough-cop/even-tougher-cop combo is Ray Winstone as Jack Regan and Ben Drew - better known as Brit-winner Plan B - as George Carter. Anyone old enough to remember the old TV series, and its spin-off movie, will remember John Thaw and Dennis Waterman clobbering many a villain as the pair of unorthodox Flying Squad* men. These men didn't take prisoners or do things by the book. Just when red tape thought it was safe to re-emerge, here they come again. Overseeing...

Ben Drew has been cast in Vertigo Films' upcoming remake of The Sweeney. The project, to be directed by Nick Love (The Firm), will see Drew (Plan B) play George Carter alongside Winstone's Jack Reagan. Based on the popular '70s ITV show starring John Thaw and Dennis Waterman, The Sweeney centres on detectives in the London Flying Squad. Love and Trainspotting writer John Hodge's script brings the action into the present day. Love said of Drew's casting: "I'm very excited about Ben playing Carter - he brings an intelligence and sensitivity that is crucial for The Sweeney. Ben is also one of the most promising and multi-talented young performers around. For me, Ray and Ben are the ultimate casting for a character driven action thriller set in London today." (more)...

Arrivederci Millwall, a largely forgotten British t.v. drama from 1990, has been repackaged and released alongside lads mag classic The Football Factory by Vertigo Films. It is cut from the same cloth, mostly, as Alan Clark’s The Firm but focuses its attention on a group of football fans leading up to – and during – the World Cup of 1982. There are political and sociological themes and sub-plots at play for added weight.
Is there a dewy-eyed nostalgia present in re-releasing these sorts of films? Awaydays and The Firm are recent films looking back with blood-tinted glasses. Sure, there’s more than a whiff of the 1980s these days, and not just in terms of music and fashion. Are we present in a “commodius vicus of recirculation”, to quote James Joyce.

For those not in the know, The Sweeney was a British police drama from the 1970′s, replacing the sometimes slightly twee and parochial style of earlier British police series such as Z-Cars and Dixon of Dock Green with something a good deal more gritty.
The original series dealt with the work of the Flying Squad branch of the Metropolitan Police (Sweeney Todd / Flying Squad – it’s a cockney rhyming slang thing) and featured Detective Inspector Regan and his assistant Detective Sergeant Carter. It was, for its time, a faced paced series with much more in the way of on-screen violence than the British television viewing public were accustomed to.
Although the original TV series did spawn a couple of theatrically released feature films (Sweeney! in 1977 and Sweeney 2 a year later), there have been rumours for a while of a fresh film version in the works. The Hollywood Reporter posted...

After several false starts it looks like Nick Love's adaptation of the 70's cop show The Sweeney is finally going to make it all the way to the big screen.
Ray Winstone is still attached to play Jack Regan, who along with his partner George Carter try to keep the streets of London clean of thugs by dishing out their own form of tough justice. John Thaw and Dennis Waterman originally played the two cops in the 70's show, which aired on ITV for three years.
The role of Carter hasn't been cast yet, but a whole host of big names have shown interest over the course of development, including Ewan McGregor, Tom Hardy, Orlando Bloom and, most recently, Daniel Craig.
Love (The Business, The Firm, The Football Factory) is penning a fresh draft of the script and is said to be concentrating on "making a gritty, slick British cops and robbers movie.

London -- Writer-director Nick Love is gearing up for his long-gestating big-screen adaptation of hard-hitting cult 1970s cop show "The Sweeney," with Ray Winstone attached to star as no-nonsense policeman Jack Regan.
The U.K.'s Vertigo Films has retained the remake rights after the production label's longtime development partners, DNA Films partners Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, opted not to renew.
Love is penning a fresh draft of the movie. Vertigo producer James Richardson told THR that the filmmaker plans to concentrate on making a gritty, slick British cops and robbers movie.
The original series, which aired on ITV for three years in the 1970s, is credited with revolutionizing the TV cop show genre, portraying the detectives as tough roustabouts who liked a drink and some fisticuffs as much as the criminals they were chasing.

Our roving reporter, Adam Farina has been off interviewing again and this time it’s director of The Firm, Nick Love. Love has previously brought us movies like The Football Factory and The Business, both of which did very well with DVD sales. The Firm is a remake of the Alan Clarke TV movie of the same name which starred Gary Oldman back in 1988. This version is directed by Nick Love who has previously brought us movies such as ‘The Football Factory’. Both versions of ‘The Firm’ are based around the original screenplay which was written by Al Ashton.
In the interview, Adam asks Nick about the casting of Paul Anderson and Calum McNab plus looks a little deeper into the genre that Love seems to have a lot of focus on. Love also talks bout the possibility of a sequel to The Business which a lot of people would love to see.

Police Apologise Over Soccer Film Mix-up
Filmmakers behind soccer movie The Firm have been handed an official apology from London police - after cops mistook the shoot for scenes of real violence.
Officers investigating clashes between rival fans in east London in August used a TV report by Sky News to capture the faces of hooligans believed to be involved in fighting ahead of West Ham's crucial game against Millwall.
But officers failed to realise the TV channel was actually broadcasting footage from the movie and they sent out pictures of the actors alongside real suspects wanted in connection with the violence.
Scotland Yard bosses have now withdrawn six mugshots they published, over fears they could be sued by the film's stars.
A spokesman for the police force says, "We wish to apologise unreservedly to those affected."
A representative for the production company behind the movie, Vertigo Films, adds, "We have received an apology from the Metropolitan Police which has been accepted."
The film stars British actors Daniel Mays, Paul Anderson and Calum McNab.

The Firm Extra Lost Finger In Fight Scene

The film depicts gritty soccer violence in the 1980s and several scenes show mob fights with cops on the streets of southern England.

There are six words in the English Language that when assembled in the correct order yield extraordinary power. They can, depending on your age, which hemisphere of the brain you use, your temperament, your sex and your sexual orientation, either send you into a frenzy of joy, as though your brain were made of water and someone had dropped in two enormous fizzy tablets, or if you’re one of the unfortunate few, the six would tip the fragile balance of your mind, converting healthy, passive individuals into deranged sociopaths. Steady yourself. Here they come…

Nick Love isn't known for heart. The film which earned him his "From the director of..." title card, The Football Factory, is nothing if not violent, loud and not particularly critically well-loved. His follow-up, The Business, recasts Danny Dyer and sets itself in the Costa Del Crime world of 80s Spain and had a similarly rocky reception with scribes. And yet he's one of Britain's better-known directors, suggesting he talks to an active audience of cinemagoers. With The Firm, Love revisits themes present in both films -- the 80s and football-fan violence -- but has more in common with his...
