Moving, hard to watch and terrible in its beauty
dhauka-122 January 2009
"Down Here" is important. An unflinching look at cruelly damaged people who still hold onto their humanity and dignity in an impossibly cruel street society of drugs, homelessness and prostitution. Filmed in Vancouver, Canada - one of "the best cities to live in on Earth" - the film is a straight to camera accusation of our social order. Its subjects don't blame anyone but themselves for their situation. And yet their lot and the hell they live in is our collective responsibility. Charles Wilkinson directed, shot, edited and composed the music for this thirty minute tour de force which leaves its audiences moved, saddened and filled with resolve to effect change. "Down Here" is a must see that calls the viewer to action for all the right reasons.
