Continental Reach
bkoganbing24 November 2014
Jeremy Sisto and Anthony Anderson catch a case where the investigated party has a continental reach. A dead Mormon boy from Arizona is found stabbed in Central Park. But it turns out he's not just your average name plate white shirt elder. He's from a breakaway group of Mormons who practice polygamy. At least one of them does. Colm Meaney is the head of the sect and he's got six wives ranging in age from 44 to 17. One of the perks of being a prophet, still he's a piker next to Brigham Young who had at least 27.

There's another death yet and this guy from Arizona has the local law in his hip pocket as runaway wife Jena Malone predicts. He's also a con artist as he's collecting illegal welfare from one of the reddest of red states. Still he's white not like one of those illegal Mexicans everyone is worried about.

I could not for the life of me understand why the idiot judge ruled that we can't talk about polygamy, especially since it is illegal. Got to respect these polygamists, especially ones like Meaney who view it as a Christian harem. Renders the story as beyond comprehension given the context of a murder.

Not one of the better stories from Law And Order.

Underwhelming lost boys
TheLittleSongbird11 November 2022
"Lost Boys" didn't do much for me even when it first aired. Not through any fault of the cast and did find it very intriguing to begin with, but there is in every season at least one episode where the episode starts off well but goes off the boil later on. Even in my late teens, that was the feeling gotten from watching "Lost Boys". As indicated in all my reviews for all the previous episodes, this reviewer considers 'Law and Order' her personal favourite of the franchise due to the earlier seasons being so good.

The show wasn't exempt from disappointments, and almost all the seasons had at least one disappointing episode. "Lost Boys" is one of the few from the surprisingly good Season 19. It sounded good on paper, even though not new premise-wise, and like on first watch it started off very well. It is however a massive step down from the excellent previous two episodes and is let down badly by the not well done at all legal portion.

It is far from a bad episode. Production values have the usual slickness and grit and the music is unobtrusive and gives big revelations even more impact without over-emphasising. The direction is deliberate but not sluggish on the most part. The script has a lot of talk but doesn't feel rambling.

Did think too that "Lost Boys" starts off quite promising and the policing was intriguing. Compared to before, the improvement in the chemistry between Lupo and Bernard is pretty staggering. The episode is very well acted by all the regulars, it is the lead portion that just about makes the legal portion watchable.

Because in most other areas the legal portion is really disappointing. The tension is completely lacking, surprises are few and did find very hard to believe that something so awful was defended in the way it was, which was cringe inducing. The episode was also not perfect before the legal portions, the supporting characters never came over as real and instead overdone stereotypes and the support acting seemed under-rehearsed.

Absolutely agree about the judge's ruling sticking out like the sorest of thumbs and it ruined what credibility the rest of the episode had, it is truly incomprehensible and incredibly unrealistic considering the severity of the crime. The ending felt over crowded.

Overall, underwhelming. 5/10.
