Chicago – The acting career of Illeana Douglas began with director Martin Scorsese and flourished in her first lead role for “Grace of My Heart” (1996). She is best known today for hosting the “Trailblazing Women” series on Turner Classic Movies, and in Part Three of a three part interview with HollywoodChicago.com, she talks about feminism, the essence of directors she has worked for, plus her grandmother Helen Gahagan, the third female Congress representative in U.S. history.
Illeana Douglas was born in Massachuetts, the daughter of Gregory Douglas, the son of 1930s movie star Melvyn Douglas (Helen Gahagan was his wife). She got the show biz bug as a young teenager, when she was able to visit her grandfather on the set of “Being There” (1979). After high school she moved to New York City to pursue a career. She studied acting while working various jobs, and met Martin Scorsese while...

Chicago – Long before 2017, the year of notable recognition for women filmmakers, the actress, producer and author Illeana Douglas launched the film series “Trailblazing Women” on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in 2015. Her goal was to achieve recognition for the pioneering efforts of women in early film history and beyond.
“Trailblazing Women” had its third season in October of 2017, and again Douglas was the host. She has been an advocate for women throughout her show business career, besides having the ancestry cache of her grandfather – Oscar-winner Melvyn Douglas – who was a movie star and character actor from the 1930s through the 1980s.

Chicago – The year 2016 was a dangerous one to be a famous person. In the past twelve months, one dozen of my former photo subjects passed away, celebrities who at one time or another famously posed for my lens. However, on a positive note, at least photos are forever. Or to quote the immortal words of Pee Wee Herman – “Why don’t you take a picture, it will last longer!”
The ranking of the portraits are based on a combination of the star power wattage of the subjects, the artistic results and the difficulty of landing the quarry…for those budding smart-phone-celebrity-stalkers who may wish to play along at home. So without further adieu, I present my top 20 celebrity portraits of 2016.

When I first reviewed Welcome to Sweden (review here), I was not only nervous about the idea of someone getting a gig by virtue of being Amy Poehler’s brother, but also because the show seemed to be working such a “European” sense of comedy, that I wasn’t sure it would play well to American audiences.
It may have worked out that despite somewhat surprising success, the show remains a bit niche, but Greg Poehler won me over pretty quickly. Based on Greg’s real experiences living in Sweden, the show is a charmingly-envisioned culture clash that wonderfully avoids trying too hard for the comedy.
The story revolves around Greg, who has fallen in love with Emma (Josephine Bornebusch) and decides to relocate with her so that she can take a job back in Sweden. He had a solid job as an investment broker, with a lot of high profile clients,...

The creator and star of Easy to Assemble talks about the evolution of her groundbreaking Web series and what it’s like to work for Ikea.
Watching cameos from the likes of Jane Lynch and Jeff Goldblum, it's easy to forget that the breakout Web series Easy to Assemble is, at its core, one giant Ikea commercial. And what a commercial it's been: Season two of the series has earned more than 13 million views. The kudos belong to creator Illeana, who also stars as--meta alert!--an actress who works at Ikea Burbank. Season three debuts this fall on MyDamnChannel.com, and Douglas recently chatted with us about what to expect in the new season, Swedish meatballs, and how one Web show can help revitalize an entire brand.
Fast Company: When Easy to Assemble premiered, it was one of the only branded shows on the Internet. Why did Ikea approach you to make it happen?...

Crackle had talent of some of their upcoming web projects in attendance during the Sony's Television Critics Association (TCA) event, Tuesday, August 3rd at the Beverly Hilton and Tubefilter was there to get the inside scoop. Interviewees included Michael Panes (Easy To Assemble, Jonathan Dore, and Randy and Jason Sklar (Back on Topps, ["(Layers)"]). The shows they were there to talk about are Backwash and Held-Up, respectfully; two witty, off-the-cuff comedies that show that Crackle seems to be treading farther from the slick, production-value heavy dramas of their recent web past such as The Bannen Way and Urban Wolf. Both series have impressive casts including some comedy and improv as well as television and film veterans. On a windy, overcast Sunday afternoon the 2010 Streamy Awards took over the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Even though the FearNet webseries “Fear Clinic,” directed by Robert Hall and starring genre favorites Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Danielle Harris, and Lisa Wilcox, stood alone to represent our favorite genre, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a gaggle of horror-related goodies to indulge in while working the red carpet event before the show.
Before the Streamy Awards were under way, Dread Central’s red carpet team of Heather Wixson and Brian Smith had the opportunity to catch up with some new faces in horror as well as some of the genre’s most beloved personalities.
Since we never want to deprive our readers of any sort of awesomeness, Dread Central has cooked up two videos from the Streamy Awards red carpet event. The first video is chock-full of interviews.

Illeana Douglas may be quite the name in web series circles now, especially after landing six Streamy nominations for her popular comedy Easy to Assemble, which just wrapped its second season earlier this year. It even spawned a spinoff series Sparhüsen, which nabbed its own Streamy nod. But aside from those two, the Emmy-nominated TV and film actress has yet to venture into a web series where she isn't the one calling the shots. Looks like that’s about to change. Douglas just wrapped shooting a two-episode guest starring arc on Spherion-sponsored office comedy The Temp Life in New York this week, playing cold hearted CEO Eve Randall. Also shooting a guest spot this week is Taryn Southern who brings back her gumpy midwest It tech Nancy Roder for a few more episodes. This isn’t the first we’ve written about the casting moves on The Temp Life this season,...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

As far back as October, internet blogs have been cying out for more Cheri Oteri since she ended her Saturday Night Live run after five seasons. And like past SNL-cast members which have gone one to movies and other television gigs, they are now hitting the internet. Oteri made a guest starring role on Easy to Assemble earlier this fall. Now, Oteri has teamed up with AMC to star in her own web series. Liza Life Coach delivers exactly what the title orders: Liza brings the audience in on her one-on-one life coaching sessions with clients running the gamut of issues: from the grief-counselor who is just too darn happy to the guy who won the lottery the very first time he bought a ticket and is too scared to actually cash-in. Oteri plays Liza with what you would expect from a seasoned comedienne: Liza is tragically terrible at...

Illeana Douglas is flying high lately. The comedy web series in which she both created and stars, Easy to Assemble has been picking up steam this winter. It's become not just a popular success—over 5 million views so far—but also a business one, with Madison Avenue trade Advertising Age calling it the "most-watched sponsored web show" in a recent in-depth feature in the magazine. The success hasn't gone unnoticed by the show's main sponsor Ikea, which opted to fund an additional four episodes, extending the season beyond its initial ten. The new episodes, which they are calling a miniseries in its own right dubbed "Flying Solo" premieres Jan. 20 on MyDamnChannel.com, and the trailer was just released online (above). In the episodes, viewers will finally find out who won the season's Co-Worker of the Year contest between Douglas and Justine Bateman. Michael Kang, who had worked with Illeana before on a film,...

There's probably no bigger hot button issue right now in the web series world than view counts. After exposing MySpace's paid auto-plays (which were being reported as regular views) on their Bff series, we received numerous comments and emails on the subject. Emotions ran high on this as creators with decent views cried foul to cheaters trying to pass off paid impressions as actual intent-driven views. We listened to you and we're going to be taking a deeper look at the issue on Tubefilter News, including examples of those who are actually getting real viewers without cheating. Panelists on the gabby digital media conference circuit love to spew phrases like 'go to where your audience is', and even we have written on the benefits of finding your audience. There aren't however many examples to point to of those who have actually done that effectively. The Guild still stands as one...

Last night's Los Angeles premiere of Easy to Assemble season 2 was everything you would expect in a sophomore debut—bigger, brasher and beaming. For the gawkers on Hollywood Blvd. peering onto the red carpet outside the Egyptian Theater, most probably thought they were scoping out a movie premiere as stars like Keanu Reeves, Kevin Pollack, Justine Bateman and Harry Shearer casually strolled past the check-in tables with cameras flashing. The new season of the Ikea backed web series, which kicks off today, is a classic season long face-off. Picking up essentially were things left off last season, Illeana Douglas and Justine Bateman both still work at the Burbank Ikea store, playing themselves "in between acting jobs." The rivalry of the two celeb employees squares off around the coveted Co-worker of the Year title, the retail equivalent of queen bee. It's a 40 year-old's Blair vs. Serena. For the dozens of...

Illeana Douglas and the Web go together about as well as the Swedish and meatballs. After all, the quirky actress has found a following online with her Ikea-set comedy series, Easy to Assemble, which starts its second season on My Damn Channel today. (Douglas plays a fictional version of herself who, fed up with showbiz, decides to work in an Ikea store.) And that’s not all: The actress is hard at work producing a spin-off Web series, Sparhusen, which follows a Swedish band that plays music for the big box store. Not only have we snagged a sneak peek of the series (premiering Oct.

There's a lot of news to digest here, so let's start with the highlights: Keanu Reeves is starring in a web series. It's called Spärhusen and is actually a spin-off of Ikea-backed Easy to Assemble. It's part of a 7-show slate of web series from My Damn Channel premiering October 8, 2009. You know the medium is growing up when we get news of not only another A-lister headlining a web series, but the fact that it's a spinoff of another web series. Keanu Reeves is starring in Spärhusen, a spinoff series about fictional Swedish rock band of the same name that despite oozing musical talent, never quite hit the Abba level. It actually came out of an episode of Easy to Assemble from last season. For the first season, Spärhusen is basically a Behind the Music look at the "in-studio tensions" from the recording sessions of the band’s 1972 single "Apples & Fish.

Shooting has just wrapped for season 2 of Ikea-backed Easy to Assemble from creator-star Illeana Douglas. Word is that Ikea was quite happy with the show's debut season and prompted a renewal for a second helping. The new season which launches this September, will add comedians Cheri Oteri, Ricki Lake and Tim Meadows to the already impressive cast. Returning for the second go-round is of course Douglas herself along with web regulars Ed Begley Jr., Justine Bateman, Tom Arnold and Kevin Pollack. Where the first season was shot exclusively in the Ikea store, complete with hundreds of conveniently pre-made sets, the new season is said to be only half in-store. We'll see the home live series regulars like Douglas and Bateman.
