Better than Most
tradeczar24 March 2012
As a fan of Redneck Torture Porn, I became aware a long time ago of the narrow range within which the plot lines of nearly all movies of this type fall. A group of good looking young people venture into the backwoods, typically in the South, looking for adventure -- in this case, ATV riding. They stop for gas, a couple of them mumble some insulting remarks that are picked up on by the locals and then drive off to find a detour where there is never, ever cell phone coverage. "Resurrection County" is no different in many ways. But in others, it is quite watchable. The actors who play the locals are quit believable and a event relatively early in the story was so unexpected that it took my breath away. That scene in itself is worth the price of a Redbox rental. Critics who complain that there isn't a lot new here need to get a life. What did you expect?... for a pretty city girl to go off and marry an in-bred townie? Give this one a chance.

Intense, well-acted, tip-top visually, but no breath of fresh air
scarletheels16 April 2012
Two urban couples head to the countryside for some downtime; however, they're quickly introduced to the other side of 'roughing it' in the wilderness when the men's ATV excursion makes a collision course straight for hell, where the locals aren't keen to strangers. After a standoff with a couple of ill-tempered hillbillies, the residents of Resurrection County go from hostile to downright murderous, out to avenge the death of one of their own.

It's your run-of-the-mill redneck torture flick - city folks wander off into no man's land for some fresh air, only to end up being stalked (sometimes devoured, but not in this case) by a group of inbred loonies who possess the strength of Hercules and the Hulk combined. Lo and behold, the actors and actresses, a bunch of no-names, do a pretty damn decent job. The make-up department and special effects crew deserve a round of applause for creating very realistic blood and gore on a limited budget.

It falters midway through, courtesy of some slow-moving and unnecessary scenes that should have ended up on the cutting room floor, as well as succumbing to the stereo-typical errors that characters in horror movies make. There is a shotgun scene in the beginning that will satisfy sadists but, while gory throughout, there really isn't much on-screen torture or anything that qualifies as extreme, not to veteran horror fans anyway.

Although predictable, it's still intense with genuine performances, but lacks anything fresh or remarkable.

Next time, head to the beach instead
natashabowiepinky7 July 2014
Stop me if you've heard this one before: two couples are on a camping trip. En route, they fill up at a gas station, where one of the local rubes tries to come on to a female member of the party. They also meet a seriously dodgy cop. On the road again, they soon realise they are knee deep in redneck territory... when a naked man covered in tattoos tries to kill them during an unscheduled stop. They eventually arrive at their destination, and the lads decide to go motocrossing. Ignoring every single 'Keep Out' and 'No Trespassers' sign (And there's a LOT of them) they go way off the beaten track.. and run into some more of the local inbreds. Things quickly escalate from there...

I could name at LEAST 5 films with almost exactly the same scenario off the top of my head. Either this proves how worn out the storyline is, or I need to stop watching so many cheapo horror flicks. Regardless, it's as ugly and brutal as you'd expect just by looking at the cover. In the latter stages, there's almost nothing but torture and abuse, all 'lovingly' shot in close up by our voyeuristic director so we don't miss a drop of blood. Thanks, mate. That's not all: One of our leading ladies is PREGNANT. Think they might lay off her? Guess again. In fact, she probably gets the WORST suffering out of all them. Talk about taking no prisoners...

At least, if so inclined, you can get a slightly sick thrill out of these scenes. The rest of what's here is pretty much useless, including chase sequences that go on forever, some mushy relationship stuff and an old preacher (who seems to be the leader of this freak community) blathering on about how all of America is corrupt and unclean, apart from their neck of the woods. I... can't even ... describe how deluded... that is. Taken all into consideration, this maybe would have been better with the 15 or so minutes of serious gore all spliced together to make a fake snuff film. Let's face it... the main audience for this aren't going to be interested in the rest of the nonsense on display, are they? 4/10

Predictable, cliché and nothing we haven't seen before
kannibalcorpsegrinder28 January 2014
Going through rural Arkansas for a camping trip, a group of friends inadvertently offend the locals with their disregard for local laws and are forced to defend themselves from their murderous intentions as they try to get away alive.

This is about as cliché and predictable as it can get in the genre, and there's really no surprises at all in this one. It goes through the predictable notion of the civilized city people running afoul of the inbred rednecks and then getting turned on for their actions, which makes sense in some regard about whether or not to mess with the locals, but the fact that it's been done so much and so often really doesn't leave any room for originality left in this particular scene and that puts this one through the motions of ignoring their warnings, getting caught in the fray, getting captured and tortured only to fight back in the end as the survivors try to escape, and this has been done so many times recently it's rather hard to get interested in this one due to being so close to a lot of other types of films. What also hurts this one is the fact that, regardless of the familiarity here, it's nearly impossible to get invested when the people here are gigantic, colossal morons who really have no business surviving for the blatant, utterly nonsensical scenes which start off the furor against everyone as that tends to be so cliché and lifeless that making us want to be around them is really hard to accomplish. That said, there's a nice level of brutality that runs throughout this one as the tortures inflicted are shockingly brutal and twisted, all the more so for the fact that it seems entirely possible people like them came up with such a series of scenes to accomplish this, and that leaves a high blood-splatter throughout which is quite fun. As well, the final half is easily the best with a strong series of chases and encounters that tends to really get some involvement going in their quest for survival and race to escape, and that makes for some intense times there. It's enough to rise it up slightly, but there's still too much wrong on a philosophical standpoint to help this one.

Rated R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Brief Nudity and attempted rape.

Boring, predictable, weak
the_wolf_imdb13 October 2012
This movie is another redneck torture porn crap. It is boring, predictable and you can see the ending from miles away. There are no surprises there.

The only surprise for was based on fact the movie was described to me in the shop as a "gothic horror story" similar to the Children of Corn. Boy, these people have been so wrong!

Seriously I have no idea who could watch these redneck slashers on purpose. Are these movie designed so folks from American cities do not try to wander in the woods? Is this really supposed to be some religious replacement of hardcore porn sold as a story? Seriously, the only such movie which was fun was the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and maybe The Southern Comfort. All other movies are so derivative and unoriginal. I would never watch another one unless being tricked to buy it by accident as it happened in this case. I have so wasted the money on this one :-(

Like Texas Chain Saw Massacre? Not.
RedQueenIMDB6 January 2014
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was not about torture, but an unusually deranged family who were violent in some original and creative ways inspired by Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein. The film is an incomparable and timeless cinematic masterpiece which culminates in a terrifyingly bizarre dinner party.

This film conversely, is the typical overdone torture porn movie - the only similarity being the kids encounter rednecks in the country - with that empty don't-need-a-reason attitude. A perfect demonstration of how torture flicks don't belong in the horror genre due to their general omission of anything scary or creative - only unimaginative meaningless torture.

I couldn't finish watching Resurrection County. Mainly because it was disturbing in a most unoriginal way. And also because the script and interaction between characters was shallow and unbelievable. And it was just too boring.

Surprised
AwesomeLash15 June 2012
So I was in the mood to watch a stereotypical bad horror movie and I settled on this due to decent reviews. I was very surprised mostly by how realistic the villains were in this one. They are more like people that we have met or even know rather than your run-of-the-mill typical inbred stupid rednecks you tend to see in these movies. This movie sets up the norm and then has an early (edge of your seat disturbing) scene in the first quarter and then kind of dies out a bit before gearing back up again. I was surprised at the character left standing but I saw the ending coming a mile away. Maybe I've just seen too many of these movies.

The acting and effects are believable. The story is pretty realistic (most of the time.) I was going to give 6 stars but I gave it 7 because it was on my mind for a couple days after watching it. I personally enjoyed this movie.

Not bad at all.............
bfp1310819 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie because it is definitely better than IMDb or AMAZON reviews suggest. The real star of the show isn't Adam Huss but Dayton Knoll. His acting is spectacular and if he didn't receive some kind of award post-production, he should have. We leave the movie never knowing whether Adam H. 's character was raped or not, though his g/f obviously was. The director/writer should have gone one way or the other because, ultimately, they deliver a rather sexist message.....Huss' delicate feelings be spared! The film is on the level of Hostel (which I enjoyed too). The location sites, the "scary" rednecks", and the "innocence" of the campers all gloved together nicely. I didn't think it was a great film, but, I thought it was good film and one I would watch again.

Probably one of the more realistic films of its type, but realistic isn't necessarily entertaining
dannorder13 February 2024
The first thing I noticed about the film was its promo image. It's effective: it's both brutal and spooky. Turns out is not an image from the film. The film's two female stars are a long-haired brunette and a short-haired redhead (the latter seems to be channeling Susan Ruttan for some bizarre reason... maybe someone was a huge fan of LA Law?). There are scenes that are highly similar to the image, though.

The major premise of this movie is that the main characters go off to the woods to ride their ATVs. They are going mudding, basically. It's a movie about rural people who happen to have some disposable income versus rural folks who are dirt poor and insanely violent from extreme politics. They are the type of bad guy that actually exists in this world, unlike ghosts and werewolves and genius serial killers and so forth. Normal rural people are also included in this movie, most dramatically in a law enforcement officer who demonstrates professionalism and tolerance. There are also some morally ambiguous characters to varying degrees. But the people who are villains are hardcore evil. For example, there are at least three attempted victims of nonconsensual sexual activity. But the filmmakers avoid showing anything except the violence,

The biggest problem with the film is that there's something off about the pacing. Most films have something to hook you and then a lead up to a flurry of activity. This one has big things happen, a conspicuously long gap in the middle where they added characters and nothing is really happening, and finally things happening again.

In all, it was maybe a slightly above average film, but it has nothing that's a must-see.

Bad
jtntenn12 September 2014
It has nothing to do with the acting since anyone can be hateful, sociopathic, and devoid of any human qualities reference ISIS who are NOT acting. This movie shows the level we have sunk to provide "entertainment" and provide us with realistic social interaction. Sadism and terror can be found in most news stories today so why do we have to "enjoy" watching this kind of filth. Boris Karloff said that most horror does not have to be shown but implied because the mind will create more horrific images from ones own imagination. This is another slasher movie that tries to show as many ways of killing, in as many horrific ways as possible. These types of movies are now trying to one up each other with more and more ways of death and dismemberment. And to foster this off as being based on true events is even more degrading to the people who were involved in the "original" event and this particular genre. It also degrades the very concept of a group of people called "rednecks". The movie Deliverance shows the concept of redneck better than this so called movie.

things get scary running through the woods .
carlacj30 March 2012
I thought the actors were great new refreshing and very believable southern accents seemed real and authentic... The scenery was as beautiful as it was haunting and dark . The blood and graphics were awesome they looked very real especially when they got hit in the head with the butt if a gun very good detail... when the first guy got it I was shocked and what happened to the first girl just blew me away I did not expect that at all I absolutely was on the edge of my seat thru a lot of it especially toward the end . The ending was awesome unexpected and very unique . I was completely shocked and surprised by it , can't wait to see it again . I will watch Resurrection County again...

Fairly In Tents
NozinAroun8110 November 2011
When it comes to bad horror films, "Resurrection County" is slightly above average. Winner of Best Horror Film at the Bare Bones Festival (whatever that is), it's a low budget, straight-to-DVD slasher flick that entices you with its R18+ rating. I can't really see the need for it myself. Most of the gore is left to your imagination.

The plot owes heavily to the likes of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Wrong Turn"... to name a few. Two couples set up camp a little too close to a clan of Rednecks who "don't much like them city folk". Nothing new here. Fortunately it boasts a few genuinely intense moments and the acting isn't too bad. It sags a bit in the middle and it suffers from a few classic horror movie mistakes. Don't leave shotguns behind, don't waste bullets and don't stop for a quick smooch when you're surrounded by psychos.

If you enjoy the occasional bad horror movie, you could do much worse than RESURRECTION COUNTY.

Check out my IMDb List for some better suggestions. "HORROR/THRILLER: Obscure, Overlooked & Underrated" http://www.imdb.com/list/8QFZ78e4Ar8/

Typical
gascap14 March 2015
Just another leftist BS hit piece based on lies and intended to gin up hatred toward Southerners and/or non-urbanites. The people who may find this tripe entertaining need to be closely watched and monitored. This is not entertainment, it is sick propaganda. That someone could put this to film, let alone imagine or write such garbage speaks volumes toward the downward spiral of humanity. Adding the low-hanging fruit of Christian bashing shows the creators as being true cowards as well. They dare not take on a real enemy. I'd suggest that the filmmakers and the others that enjoy this trash take a good long look in a mirror... and stay the hell away from me.

Who Cares?
mcjensen-0592410 February 2024
The set up alone is such cringe worthy garbage you'll be lucky to even make it up to the violent aspects of the film that most people are into it for. Our cast are a talentless bunch of mush brained imbeciles spouting their inane lines like robots. The guys are especially lame, and our women for some reason have so much makeup on for a camping trip I'm surprised they could even hold their heads up. The story lines and drama are predictable if not absurd. I kinda wanted them all to perish miserably. This is inimaginative tripe, written badly and directed even worse. The word that kept coming to mind is silly. Even the bad guys are generic clowns that can't be taken seriously. Crazy backwoods psychopaths with freshly cut hair hardly inspire fear. Crappy stop motion editing only makes it worse. Fight scenes that will make you laugh in dismay. The first half hour alone gives the viewer everything that's wrong with modern horror movies. You'll be reaching for your phone quickly with this one.

Who cares?
okpilak2 March 2024
This is a very unpleasant movie to watch. And worse, difficult to care about anyone. It is religion driven backwoods stereotypes. Two couples, apparently from Memphis, travel to this park in backwater Arkansas to do some off road ATV travel. They stop at a gas station to also get directions, as they don't find places on the map. And they show behavior that is certainly not meant to go well with people who do not like outsiders. After they set up camp, along comes a 'ranger' giving a friendly hello. His truck has no insignia, his green 'uniform' has cloth name tags, and a U. S. Forest Service cloth badge, which should have been an obvious clue he wasn't. The two young men zoom off on the trails, and naturally get lost. Despite seeing all the no trespassing signs, they approach a house. Not a good idea, especially with their attitudes. It is just the start of their problems, and that just starts a whole series of unpleasantness. And nothing in any way of a new approach. That set lights are seen in some of the scenes suggests low budget.

Couldn't Help But Like It
Mrssmiff27 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I watch many a horror film, some good and some bad - I know what I like and I liked this very much.

Whilst Resurrection County won't win any awards, my personal opinion is that it rose above many other films of its ilk by putting a different slant on the "rednecks" usually seen in movies of this type. The inhabitants of Enoch, in my opinion, were more of a religious/survivalist type who would for the most part, leave intruders alone - unless of course, they interfere in their world.

I have no complaints about the acting or the effects and was surprised by the ending... my only complaint was the character of Lucy whom I found a bit irritating and Dayton Knoll reminded me of Corey Feldman - other than that, a rather solid little film.

Fascinating Glimpse into Arkansas Backwoods Culture
dianerpessler-4616421 August 2015
Beautifully directed and photographed on location in Arkansas, Resurrection County is an electric horror movie that is original, creative, and finely crafted. The story of city people hiking in the woods and being pursued and violated by back country lunatics could well be clichéd. Not in this remarkable film. The characters are deeply developed and fresh. Even the villains are much more than murderous beasts out for blood. The humanity of all involved is explored and the extent civilized individuals are willing to go in order to live is wonderfully observed. The suspense never lets up and the thrills come one after another. An Award winning film of unusual quality.

Unrelentingly Disturbing and Shocking Horror
jlthornb5121 August 2015
Gifted director Matt Zettell sets the screen afire with horror in this incredibly intense film where suburbanite campers must fight for their very lives against unimaginable terror. Creating an atmosphere of unrelenting horror and dread, Zettell provides one shocking sequence after another. At times the starkly haunting imagery is overwhelming and one is forced to look away. The acting is uniformly superb with a cast that each delivers breathtaking performances. This is a film that constantly asks the question of what we would do if put in such a situation. Would we be able to do what it takes to survive? A film that reaches beyond the horror elements to confront the audience with existential matters seldom confronted in cinema.

Thats more like it....
nightwatch477327 January 2013
This is possible my favourite backwoods film of all time and yes that means it exceeds The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ( 1974 ). I was giving up on North American Horror until I watched this little gem a few years back. In fact I thought only Asia and Europe were making great flicks, hello Martys, Frontiers, Inside, High Tension, In my skin, Creep, Severance, Storm warning, Eden lake, Them,The orphanage etc etc etc but films like this one, Lovely Molly, Insidious and The Orphan have renewed my trust in films in North America. Resurrection County is one of the most insanely intense film I have seen in years. I was on the edge of my seat throughout its beautifully crafted running time. You can see the influence from such films like High Tension and Frontiers here especially with our main heroine with her short hair and blood drenched body. Distribution for this gem was very small so please do seek it out. It will be worth every minute you put into it.
