- Addison opposes a plan put into action by the rest of the staff before she joined the Practice, while Violet is asked to put her license in jeopardy by one of her best friends, who happens to be running for office.
- Add shrieks in bed over paperwork, having come up with $487,000 as the magic number to save the practice. She stands up and does the leader dance over SWAT cop. In another bed, Pete and Meg welcome the new day. Meg smokes again, Pete nags. He stops for more sex. Cooper and Charlotte throw away the condoms; they're going to the pill only (after getting tested). But first, Charlotte has a job interview.
In another bed, Sam and Naomi are interrupted by their daughter who asks if they're getting back together. They both say yes.
At work, Sam wonders if he missed a chance to sew oats. Naomi tells Violet she and Sam are getting back together. Add horns in on the conversation and then tries to make a self-deprecating joke about the "mean new boss lady." Naomi isn't quite ready to be buddies.
At a meeting, Add announces $487,000. Her plan is to open one hour earlier and close one hour later and add half-time Saturdays. The group mumbles and then leaves for "Jenna's Day," which is apparently exciting once we know what it is.
Dell puts a bowl of Planned Parenthood condoms on the counter, when Violet sees Cooper not taking any, she thinks it's over with Charlotte. She incredulous he's going to be monogamous, and can't quite seem to congratulate him on it.
In surgery, Naomi and Pete work on Jenna, doing something to her fluid. She's got a wedding ring. Her mom keeps her company. Her equally young husband comes in after they get her eggs. Everyone in the practice is excited for her and finally someone clues Add in: Jenna is 17 and dying. They're taking her eggs to give her her last wish: a baby.
Violet visits an old college friend, Kara Wei, who's running for Congress. She tells Vi her opponent is calling people in her past for dirt. She checks that Vi won't give them anything. She asks her to destroy her medical records. She confesses to Vi that she had shock therapy in college after her mother died. Vi says it's not a big deal nowadays. Kara wants the files to disappear. Vi tells her she could lose her license, but Kara begs.
As Naomi implants the eggs, Add asks what they're doing. Violet has counseled the girl's family and they all pitched in on her treatment of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. It's a decision they made before Add got there. Pete tells her to leave it alone.
Dell, going over the finances, finds more than $100k in unpaid bills. Add tells him to be an "enforcer" and motivate people to pay up.
Violet asks if Cooper has a minute and doesn't notice that he's distracted and waiting for his test results. She tells him about Kara's request. She calls Kara her best friend and Cooper says that he is. Charlotte interrupts.
Sam and Naomi awkwardly bump in the hallway and decide to talk later.
Sam envies Jenna knowing what she wants at such a young age.
Add bumps into Jenna's husband Nick in the hallway, having just made his deposit. He says the rest of the team is at a game which gives Add entry to ask who's going to raise his baby and if it's what he wants.
Cooper and Charlotte finish their tests and he asks if her interview was out of state. Nope.
Naomi implants the sperm in Jenna's egg as her parents and Nick watch. He freaks out, says he doesn't want a baby and leaves.
Nick hides in an office while Jenna's family and almost the whole practice wait outside. When he comes out and says it's like "she" said looking at Addison, the baby is not what he wants.
Naomi chews Add out for butting in, accusing her of sabotage.
Vi has lunch with Kara, telling her mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. Kara tells Vi neither is rape. Kara helped Violet out when she needed it and she wants Violet's help now. Vi can't do it.
Sam tells Cooper he feels the need to "step off a cliff" and do something dramatic. And so Cooper pierces Sam's ear.
Dell is tired of being a bill collector, but Add tells him they really need the money. He makes a face like he knows something. Add asks what it is.
There is 10,000 square feet of unleased space on the fourth floor of the building, where Sam and Naomi first opened the practice. They join Add up there, both refusing to lease it out because they think it's the practice's future. Add is mad at Sam for not telling her about it. Naomi says Add is trying to control things again. She tells her she's already ruined the last wish of a dying girl and Add interrupts, telling her to keep it up, because eventually she's not going to care whether Naomi forgives her.
Add storms off.
Naomi notices Sam's earring. She suggests he come over for dinner and after they can talk. Sam seems lukewarm about it, but says OK.
Over wine, Pete gives Meg a hard time about smoking, driving her off.
Cooper and Charlotte lie chastely in bed, waiting the results of their HIV tests which are late but coming tomorrow. They're forced to talk about their days instead. Cooper says the practice is broke and they might lease their fourth floor. Charlotte says she doesn't feel like a doctor anymore, but the interview was interesting. She distracts Cooper from asking more questions by suggesting a make-out fantasy.
Add complains to SWAT guy about the competing agendas of being a friend and being a good boss as they eat Chinese food naked.
At Sam's, Maya wants lots of details about what her parents' reconciliation is going to be like, but they don't have them.
At work, Violet goes somewhere and when Cooper tries to stop her, saying if Kara was her friend she wouldn't be asking this of her. Vi responds by laying a guilt trip on Cooper about her lonely night last night.
Naomi asks Sam what his problem is and he presents her with a bucket list of things to do, which she takes as being spurred by fear of getting back together with her. Before that gets too angry, Jenna and her parents come in. She's ready to use a sperm donor if Nick, who didn't come home last night, won't get on board.
Add hears the words "sperm donor" and butts in. Pete is now having reservations. Add argues the husband has a right to weigh in. Naomi tells her to mind her own business. After Add leaves, Naomi complains that now that Add's boss she thinks she's always right. Pete says the problem is that she is right this time.
Cooper follows Violet to the hospital for Kara's records. When the clerk asks for her ID, Charlotte walks by and vouches for Violet as Cooper tries to stop her without giving away what's going on. Charlotte wants to drag Cooper away to get their blood test results but he wants to stay to stop Violet from doing something illegal. Violet gives him a super "go with your little girlfriend" glare and he does. Vi leaves with the files.
Pete finds Nick at the arcade, telling him Jenna's looking at sperm donors. Nick says none of this is what he wants, he wants them to be happy together, just the two of them. Pete tells him to tell her that.
Violet goes to see Kara, saying she poured her heart out to her and Kara told her nothing.
Add confronts Violet about trying to control things and holding on, to the idea of Jenna's baby, to the fourth floor, to her anger. "Some dreams you have to let go," Add says before walking out.
Kara spills about her abusive mother, who used to use a belt. She killed her mother in self-defense and has managed to keep it hidden. Violet gives her the file, trying to convince her to choose to be the person she once knew. Kara takes the file from Violet and puts the pages in the shredder. Violet turns and leaves.
Jenna tells Sam they found a sperm donor they like. Naomi tells her she can't. She says when they talk about the baby they get to forget she's dying. Pete returns with Nick. He tells her he doesn't want a baby, but he does want her.
Later, Naomi takes out Sam's infected earring. He says he's ready to try things again with her. She tells him if he'd said that a day or two ago, it would have been what she wanted to hear, but now, she thinks they have to let go (because major life decisions like that totally change in 24 hours despite months of indication otherwise).
Violet, puffy-eyed, visits Cooper, saying she messed up. She did it because she wanted a friend and feels alone. Dell finally arrives with the blood test results. Cooper tosses them aside for later, saying right now his best friend needs him.
At the elevator, Naomi tells Add to go ahead and lease it. Add tells her she already did. Naomi says Add's going to be a good leader.
Pete returns home to see Meg packing. They need her in Ghana. Meg tells him to quit trying to domesticate her, she's not his wife...."who died before she could quit smoking," he says. Maybe he should have mentioned that before. But he asks her to come back, because he's happier when she's there.
Cooper prepares a romantic evening for Charlotte, who's finishing up business... in the newly leased fourth floor. A man tells her he knew she was right for the job when she told him about the space.
Naomi hugs her daughter and apologizes for getting her hopes up.
