Back in the 1990s and mid-2000s, Watchmen was stuck in development hell. Director Terry Gilliam made many attempts to get his take off the ground but just couldn’t make it work, eventually trying to pitch his project as a five episode miniseries. At the time, the TV production landscape was drastically different and, understandably, no studio was willing to risk a big budget superhero miniseries full of expensive special effects. Then Zack Snyder came along and the rest is history.
Snyder’s take on Watchmen just didn’t seem to understand what Alan Moore was trying to say in his comic, though. Instead, it inserted distractingly gory action and one of the most ludicrous sex scenes ever committed to celluloid. I’ll give it some kudos, though, Jackie Earle Haley was an excellent Rorschach and the Koyaanisqatsi soundtracked Dr. Manhattan origin scene was brilliant.

We're almost a week removed from its reveal, and people are still uncovering easter eggs and references from the Justice League Comic-Con trailer. After it was spotted that he was watching Rick and Morty on one of his televisions, we see that Barry Allen is once again the host of yet another reference to the outside world. This time, it's related to the classic DC comic series Watchmen:
See that shirt? It's actually a T-shirt featuring Watchmen cover art from a story-within-the-story called Tales of the Black Freighter:
Pretty neat, right? I'm still a little leery of this film post-Batman v Superman, but this trailer is giving me hope that this movie will bring great things to the DC universe. Thanks to Redditor Draynior for the heads up!

The superhero boom is about to come full circle.
Though 2008’s Iron Man is generally held as the first great comic book movie of the current period (Batman Begins doesn’t count, because while it’s a superhero movie, it’s about a million miles away from being a comic book movie), Watchmen probably did more to shape the McU and the Dceu. It was the moment when the post-superhero movie came into existence (assuming you ignore the claims of The Incredibles in 2004), launching the contradiction of pulpy tone and ideological weight that continues to shape the genre now.
And now, 6 years after the film – a flawed but brilliant adaptation of the source (no matter what Alan Moore might claim) – it looks like the source is going to be readapted by the same man for TV.
According to Collider, Zack Snyder has met with HBO to talk about a Watchmen TV series.

Alan Moore always said his graphic novel was unfilmable, and for a while, that almost looked true. Mark looks at attempts to adapt Watchmen
It's now been just over five years since Zack Snyder brought Watchmen, the acclaimed comic series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, to the big screen. Whatever you think of the final film, you could hardly say that the source material was easy to adapt.
Moore's thought-provoking script and Gibbons' detailed artwork came together to make one of the most acclaimed comic series ever created- frequently referred to as comics' answer to The Godfather. Some argue that the comic book movie genre got its Godfather with The Dark Knight in 2008, but studios were trying to adapt Watchmen long before that.
In fact, Hollywood's flirtations with the material date all the way back to the period when Tim Burton's Batman became a huge hit,...

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

If you missed the announcement back in the summer, Sony have been feeling a fast and furious need for speed recently, putting a movie version of their flagship Gran Turismo game franchise into development. While little (nothing) is yet known about the direction in which the film's hot wheels will be spinning, it does now have a screenwriter in current Hollywood wonderboy Alex Tse. Tse has made himself a sought-after name despite the fact that few of his screenplays have been made so far. Zack Snyder's Watchmen (including its animated companion piece Tales Of The Black Freighter) is his only palpable hit to date, but he's since worked on the upcoming Crow and Highlander remakes; adaptations of the anime Ninja Scroll, the graphic novel Battling Boy, Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man and the children's classic The Phantom Tollbooth; and Gangland, an action thriller for Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis...

Despite the rumors of Vin Diesel portraying the heroic synthezoid known as the Vision in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," it would appear as though the "Fast & Furious" actor may be up for a different Marvel role entirely. Earlier this week, Diesel changed the cover photo on his personal Facebook page to that of Groot from "Guardians of the Galaxy."
Since then, fans have been speculating as to whether or not the one time "Iron Giant" could be providing his vocal talents for the Guardians' titular talking tree. After all, it's entirely possible that Diesel had assumed Disney would be officially announcing the role at the D23 Expo this past weekend. Be that as it may, there is still one very important Guardian that has yet to be cast: Rocket Raccoon. Who could play the lovable yet deadly creature? Here are five picks!

DC Comics releases what I consider to be the best of the controversial prequels to one of the most celebrated graphic novels of all time with Before Watchmen: Ozymandias /Crimson Corsair Deluxe Edition. The hardcover collection contains issues 1 through 6 of Before Watchmen: Ozymandias, the entire run of Crimson Corsair stories, and the Dollar Bill one-shot. The Crimson Corsair storyline spread out across several of the different Before Watchmen titles.
The real highlight of the Before Watchmen: Ozymandias /Crimson Corsair Deluxe Edition is Adrian Veidt's backstory. Watchmen editor Len Wein takes a character I found to be the least interesting in the original graphic novel and completely change my mind about him. When the entire prequel event came to a close, Before Watchmen: Ozymandias reigned supreme as my favorite title. Wein digs so deep into the character's psyche and gives the reader an insight into how a man's ego can drive...

Based on a true story, Ben Affleck's "Argo" tells the tale of six American hostages that escape the U.S. embassy in Tehran after its taken over my Islamic militants. In order to get out of Iran, the six Americans must pretend to be part of a Canadian film crew shooting a fake movie called "Argo." Which makes the film kind of like "Inception"; in the regard that there's a movie within the movie, not a dream within a dream.
With "Argo" now in theaters, we thought what better way to celebrate than by making our own list of things within things. Comic book things, to be exact! These comic books within comic books are all either parodies of actual comics or metaphors for something way bigger, but they're all read by both fictional comic book characters and the real people reading those comic books.
Confused yet?...

Who watches the Watchmen? The answer could be you, if you're interested in getting your hands on the collector's edition boxed set that Warner Bros. is releasing for the 2009 movie.
This new collection promises to be the most indepth look at "Watchmen" we've had yet. Zack Snyder's adaptation of Alan Moore's beloved graphic novel hit theaters three years ago and a director's cut was later released to DVD and Blu-ray, but this edition will include Snyder's initial vision for the project: "Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut." Basically it will be the director's cut with "Tales of the Black Freighter" interspersed, which Snyder had previously said was the way he wanted to adapt Moore's novel.
The special edition will also include the complete motion comic, two hours of special features, the original theatrical version of "Watchmen," a hardcover version of the graphic novel and a great case to hold it all in.

DC Comics has announced Before Watchmen, seven comic book mini-series that will chronicle earlier adventures of the characters from Watchmen, the seminal 12-issue series written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons. The comics will begin to come out this summer in specialty stores.
Considered by many to be the greatest comic book series ever written, DC's Watchmen debuted in 1986 to critical and commercial acclaim. It helped propel comics into a greater mainstream awareness and solidify that they could attain the same "serious" status as novels. Hollywood tried for nearly 20 years to make a movie out of Watchmen before 300 director Zack Snyder came along and made his Watchmen movie in 2009.
25 years after its debut, DC Comics feels that now is the time to return to the characters that Moore and Gibbons visualized and tell new tales of their days as complex crimefighters. "It's our responsibility as publishers to find...

DC Comics will publish a series of "Watchmen" prequels in the summer, which for comics fans is either the greatest news since Mylar bags or an affront to one of the great graphic novels of the last 30 years.

Philadelpha — More than a quarter of a century after "Watchmen" intrigued readers with tales of less-than-heroic and all-too-human – save for Dr. Manhattan – crime-fighting vigilantes, DC Entertainment is revisiting them in a series of original prequels this summer.
The publisher of DC Comics said Wednesday that it will launch seven interlocking and inter-connected miniseries – each focusing on a specific character – as it revisits the world first and last seen in the 1986-1987 12-issue series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, which has remained a staple of critics and consumers and a near-constant best-selling graphic novel.
The seven titles will carry the "Before Watchmen" banner, DC said.
"It's our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant," DC Entertainment co-publishers Dan Didio and Jim Lee said in a statement. "After 25 years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told.

A couple of weeks ago we gave you the heads up on an interesting new short film about a doctor's self-diagnosis and unorthodox treatment methods gone horribly awry entitled Other. We're now excited to bring you the official trailer for the film, and it just adds to the intrigue.
Other is directed by Daniel DelPurgatorio, best known for helming Tales of the Black Freighter, the companion piece for 2009's Watchmen, which featured the voice-over work of Gerard Butler. However, with Other DelPurgatorio takes a entirely new direction. Watching the trailer, I felt a strong essence of Jeff Goldblum in The Fly. Take a gander at the trailer below and see if it channels Brundlefly for you, too.
And for those of you in the Chicago area, you've got the jump on everyone. Other will be having its world premiere in Chi-Town on Thursday, December 15, at 7 pm at The Den Theater.

We've been teased several times over the past year about the idea of a rerelease of the previous "Potter" flicks in post-converted 3-D, and when MTV News caught up with producers David Heyman and David Barron recently they continued adding fuel to those rumors. "We're doing 3-D for the DVD of '7, Part 1,' and there's been no discussion of anything else yet, but I suspect the studio is going to be reluctant to let it die," Heyman said. "I'm sure it's just a matter of time."
That concept got us wondering, just what will the earlier "Potter" movies look like in 3-D? We picked...

“Bushwhacked” — the third episode of Firefly’s only, abbreviated season -– contained one of the late, lamented cult classic’s most haunting moments. With his rickety smuggler’s ship about to be boarded and searched by The Alliance, Mal decided to hide fugitive siblings Simon Tam and River from the authorities by sealing them up in spacesuits and stowing them outside. Simon – skeptical that mere “Mylar and glass” could protect him from the “nothing” of space – shuddered in fear. Incapable of even peeking at the infinite star-dotted expanse at his back, the buttoned-up doctor kept his eyes focused on Serenity...

There weren’t a lot of animated films released this year that blew me away so it was fairly easy for me to come up with my top 5 list of my favorite animated movies of 2010. Check out my list below and let me know what you think. What were some of you favorite animated films of this year?
1. How To Train Your Dragon
This was by far the best and most entertaining animated movie of the year, and I was shocked that it came out of DreamWorks Animation because their films usually end up being disappointing. This movie was just flat out awesome though.
I loved the humor and tone of the story, it was a smart and heartfelt film that left you with a good feeling inside. I seriously don’t know how a person could watch this film and not like it. It’s a movie that everyone can enjoy,...

Cary Granat's Granat Entertainment is teaming with Reel FX, the company run by former Ilm exec Ed Jones, to form Bedrock Studios, with the aim of developing and producing franchise films in the range of $35 million and under.
The company also hopes to produce content for TV, publishing and digital media.
Granat and Jones have been quietly working for months on the venture, slyly acquiring and developing material and is now hitting the ground running,
It is in preproduction on its first project, the animated feature "Turkeys," has tapped Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson to voice star as two turkeys who discover a time machine and travel back to the first Thanksgiving to take themselves off the menu. Ash Brannon ("Toy Story 2") is directing while John J. Strauss and David I. Stern wrote the script and are producing. Luke Wilson is also lending his voice, and Peter Farrelly will executive produce the project.

Rare is the film where the director's cut is better than the film unspooled before your eyes in the theatre. Usually the director's cut tends to be slower and focus on more boring aspects of the narrative. Sometimes, they can be incredibly self-indulgent and pretentious. The point is, there's usually a reason why the unsuspecting public never gets to see the cut until the ancillary market of home video, and even then you have to question the reasoning behind it's release. (Oh right, it's money).
Occasionally, though, a director's cut will slip through the cracks to make a good movie even better. This brings much delight to the movie geek and the casual observer alike. Sometimes there's more to explore in a film that the original two hours wouldn't allow the first time around. For this, we are grateful. To honor this, I have compiled what I consider to be the best of the best.

Animated movie Dante's Inferno is to have a big-screen UK premiere in London next month.
The screening on February 2 will also be a chance for fans to be first to play the tie-in video game by Electronic Arts, ahead of its release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PSP on February 5.
The event is being held at the Apollo cinema in Piccadilly Circus by Sci-Fi-London.
The game and movie are based on part one of Dante Alighieri's classic poem, The Divine Comedy, better known as Dante's Inferno.
Each takes players and viewers through the nine circles of hell as a Crusader called Dante travels through limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery, battling demons and monsters to save his love, Beatrice, from the clutches of Lucifer.

Ten films that didn't live up to expectations Ten Most Disappointing Films of 2009
This year I've decided I'm not going to write a "Worst of 2009" list. What's the point? If you must you can visit the review archives for 2009, sort by grade and find my reviews of Fanboys, The Last House on the Left, All About Steve and I Love You Beth Cooper and then fill in six of your choosing from the "D" section and be done with it. Instead, I'm going back to what I've done only one other time and going to take a look back at the films that ended up disappointing me on one lever or another.
This way I don't have to talk about The Marc Pease Experience or Bride Wars. Year One and Whiteout don't need further dicussion and neither does G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra of Fighting. Instead I can...

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday...

We're seeing more and more comic books and graphic novels being adapted for the big screen and, even with varied results at the box office, the trend shows no sign of stopping.
This is largely because established titles come with a devoted fanbase while newer publications are akin to film storyboards that give studios a clear visual idea of the project.
Only recently I have twice reported on a number of comics that are being picked up by film bosses, and you can see those round-ups here and here.
I talked about the craze to comic book writer and artist Al Davison, who runs The Astral Gypsy graphic novels shop and art studio in the Canal Basin here in Coventry.

It’s been less than a year since Watchmen hit the big screen and already we’re seeing our third cut of the film, and easily the most expansive. I’ll start off by saying this is a review of the film, not of the DVD/Blu-ray and all of it’s bonus features. I’ve seen every cut of the film to date and I felt that at this point, only a few months after the last release it’d be important to know if this is the version of the film to own or not, and whether or not you should buy it if you already own the last version. Take that into mind when reading this and I think you’ll see where I’m coming from.
Watchmen is the comic book movie that nobody said could be done. It was too story heavy, too big and ambitious,...

Sin City 2 Clive Owen recently announced to the press that production on Sin City 2 could finally start next year. In an MTV interview Owen went on to say "I'm hearing it might be next year. I heard that from a very good source... recently." Owen playfully suggested that his source may be either Frank Miller or Robert Rodriguez. Venom Movie Moving Forward? Sony is going forward with a Venom spinoff movie, which pretty much has fans split down the middle. Zombieland co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been tasked with penning the project. One big question has been whether a Venom movie might happen even before Spider-Man 4, but that now appears unlikely. Get your wallets ready folks, it's time for another double dip! But you knew this was coming right? Zack Snyder's initial release of Watchmen on DVD and Blu-ray may have been his Director's Cut with all the additional footage added back in, but if you'll recall, he also said he wanted to release the movie complete with the Tales of the Black Freighter animated movie integrated into the story as well. And that's exactly what you'll get from Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, heading to DVD and Blu-ray this November! This new version of the movie also includes two audio commentary tracks (which were notably absent from the original DVD release for Watchmen) featuring both Zack Snyder and illustrator Dave Gibbons. Other extras include: The Phenomenon: The Comic that Changed Comics Real Super Heroes, Real Vigilantes Mechanics: Technologies of a Fantastic World Watchmen: Video Journals My Chemical Romance...

As we know and lament often, studios are never content to release a DVD just once, and any special edition is just a precursor to a bigger and better version somewhere down the road. Just a few months after we enjoyed Watchmen: The Director's Cut comes Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, which hits store shelves on November 3. As you can guess from the cover art, this is the edition that will splice The Tales of the Black Freighter back into Watchmen, extending the movie's running time by another half hour or more.
Presumably, the footage with the newsstand vendor and the kid reading the comic will also be added in to help it flow better, but the official press release doesn't actually mention that. Other than the Black Freighter, the special features are just one big grab bag of what already appeared on the Director's Cut and Tales of the Black Freighter DVDs.

While most of the time studios wait to double dip with DVD/Bluray extended editions for a while after the initial bare bones release, the upcoming Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, set to be released on November 3rd, is following hot on the heels of the director’s cut we got a few months back.
This version will integrate the “Tales of the Black Freighter” animated feature starring Gerard Butler with a lenghty cut of Watchmen, alongside the complete motion comic adaptation of the source material. With a running time of 215 minutes and a new commentary with director Zack Snyder and illustrator Dave Gibbons, this is the most comprehensive version of Watchmen that you could possibly ever want.
The 4-disc Bluray set will be selling for $59.99, while the 5-disc DVD set will sell for $43.87. The specs of the DVD from the official press release are as follows:

Milk (Universal) Sean Penn deservedly captured his second Best Actor Oscar (and Dustin Lance Black a statuette for his original screenplay) in director Gus Van Sant’s portrait of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to hold public office in the U.S. Alternately heartbreaking, infuriating and very funny, a film that both captures a bygone era and is still very timely. Fine support from Josh Brolin, Victor Garber, James Franco and Emile Hirsch. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Three featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.
Slumdog Millionaire (20th Century Fox) The Best Picture of 2008 is a kinetic, clever audience-pleaser about a determined lad (Dev Patel) from the slums of Mumbai, who has his chance at literal and financial redemption as a contestant on India’s version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – Alan Moore and Dave Gibbon’s influential graphic novel “Watchmen” may have not made the impact that we all expected it to in theaters, but it is a film and book that still has legions of fans. Fan of the book or the movie or both should take a look at the interesting “Tales of the Black Freighter,” a companion piece that fills in the world of “Watchmen” and is now available on Blu-Ray.

Like nearly everything related to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic graphic novel Watchmen, the new DVD tie-in Tales Of The Black Freighter requires some explanation. At the end of Watchmen’s fifth chapter, Moore threw in a brief history of a nonexistent ’60s DC Comics series called Tales Of the Black Freighter, about the damned crew of a grotesque ship. Throughout Watchmen, a boy sits beside a New York newsstand, reading the Black Freighter story “Marooned,” in which a shipwrecked captain fashions a raft out of his shipmates’ gas-bloated corpses, so he can sail home and warn his family ...

Ok, so you've seen Watchmen - but you still don't have the full story. Tales of the Black Freighter, the comic-within-a-comic for Alan Moore's graphic novel, has also been film-ised for DVD release - and we have an exclusive clip from its 'making of' - with footage from the film itself as well. The story of the Black Freighter follows a marooned mariner (voiced by Gerard Butler) whose crew was brutally slaughtered by the denizens of the titular dark-coloured ship*. Morbidly convinced that the Black Freighter is headed to pillage his home town, the mariner (unnamed in the book and film; although onscreen he's a ship's captain) sets off to attempt to warn his people. Be warned: things get kinda gory.Tales of the Black Freighter is out on DVD on April 6, and includes fake-doc Under the Hood (based on the fictitious autobiography of a Watchmen supporting character: this...

One of the key differences between watching Watchmen and reading the complete book is the rich variety of extras in print. In addition to the story, there was the secondary story, Tales of the Black Freighter, in addition to newspaper clippings and excerpts from Hollis Mason’s Under the Hood. Initially, these extras were never considered but were instead added after DC’s management wisely decided the maxiseries should appear without advertising. Freed, Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons filled the pages with rich context, inviting readers further into their imagined universe and making for a more fulfilling reading experience.
