It used to be said that every movie, no matter how badly it did at the box office or critically, went to heaven. Heaven, of course, meant physical media. First, it was VHS, then it was Laserdisc, then DVD, Blu-ray, and now 4K Blu-rays; every movie would get some kind of physical media release. After all, rentals and sales were important to a film’s profitability. In fact, some movies that tanked theatrically did so well on DVD that they became perennials, such as Donnie Darko or The Transporter, with the DVD sales of that movie directly influencing the studio to greenlight a sequel and give Jason Statham a legit career as an action star. Yet, despite physical media making a comeback, it’s worth noting that some of the most popular movies in recent memory have never gotten a physical media release. And we’re not only talking about...

When you hear that D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are behind a series, you sit up and take notice. The recent Netflix drama 3 Body Problem had all the suspense and drama we've come to expect from the pair, as a team of scientists and a detective investigate the strange deaths of scientists around the world.
Based on the novel The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin, the show scored 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and topped Netflix's global top 10 for 3 weeks. But with only 8 episodes, this uber-bingeable show has already come to an end for many fans.
The good news, a new K-drama landing on April 26th is the perfect show to stream if you loved 3 Body Problem and can't believe it hasn't been renewed for Season 2.
What would you do if there were only 200 days left until the apocalypse?
That is the question the citizens of Korea face in this heart-pounding show.

The Bequeathed is a slow-burn Korean crime thriller streaming on Netflix. The 6-episode show sometimes feels tedious and has a lackluster punch; however, it’s a decent weekend binge-watch, especially with friends, because you can come up with your own theories and find little details to make it more entertaining. But if you’re looking for something more unnerving in terms of plot twists or criminal activity, then some of the shows on this list are going to be feeding you well. Of course, there are the classics like Tunnel, Signal, and Voice that are usually the first on this list, but I’m going to avoid those and give you some slightly newer shows that you may have missed. On the other hand, I’ve also added a couple of shows here that come under the “exasperated” watch list because of how frustrating they are to watch. Anxiety to the roof,...

There was no shortage of quality Korean shows to watch this year. From mystery thrillers and classic dramas to riveting reality series and heart-fluttering romances, 2023 was truly the year K-content ruled the roost. More recent releases like 1940s historical thriller, Gyeonseong Creature, with Park Seo-joon (The Marvels) and Han Soo-hee (My Name), and the latest season of horror drama favorite, Sweet Home, prove the momentum isn’t dying down anytime soon as we head into 2024.

Gone are the days when K-dramas almost exclusively meant love stories, period pieces and family dramas. Today, South Korea produces some of the most chilling and outrageously violent TV shows you’ll ever see—while also continuing to release the more traditional, wholesome fare that longtime K-drama fans fell in love with years ago.
The diversification of genres in recent years can largely be attributed to the rise of global streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+. In the past, most K-dramas were aired on broadcast TV, which comes with certain guidelines around what can and cannot be shown. By contrast, streamers aren’t bound by such rules around content.
The result? More extreme and graphic K-dramas, with Korean original series on Ott services like Netflix, often featuring plenty of gore and violence, and sometimes some sex and nudity as well. This year saw a host of Korean thrillers and horror series,...

Barbra Streisand’s memoir My Name is Barbra released Tuesday, and among the stories shared throughout the book’s 992 pages are details of her friendship with fellow legend Judy Garland.
From 1963 to 1964, Garland had her own musical variety show that aired on CBS, and on one episode sang a duet with the Egot winner. In an excerpt shared with People, Streisand wrote, “Judy and I became friends. We spoke on the phone, and she came to one of the rare parties I gave at my New York apartment.” She recalled,...

Plot: At an elite prep school in 1970, the students prepare to leave for their Christmas holidays, but a handful cannot be with their families. To their dismay, they’re left in charge of the much-disliked teacher, Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti). When all of the boys are given a last-minute reprieve by one of their fathers and are whisked away on a ski trip, Hunham is left behind for the holidays with the one kid, Angus (Dominic Sessa), who can’t get permission to go, along with the school’s cook, Mary (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
Review: Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers is a very welcome return to form for the director. Playing out like a lost film from the early seventies, complete with a simulated 35mm feel to the lensing (with the wear and team of a film print), it’s a low-key but deeply moving character drama with some hilariously profane dialogue.

The crowd of celebrities, music industry insiders, and media folks that crammed into the New York City club Racket on Thursday evening had every reason to believe they were there to witness a Rolling Stones concert, but it was impossible to be sure at first. The invitation billed the event merely an “album release party” timed to the release of Hackney Diamonds. We were told all phones and smart watches would be placed in pouches, and “armed guards” and “personal security” wouldn’t be allowed in. “Dress cool,” read the invite.

This is not a drill, BTS fans! The group's youngest member, Jungkook, has officially launched his solo era. While the maknae has released numerous singles as gifts to fans through the years and collaborations like "Left and Right" with Charlie Puth and his World Cup anthem, "Dreamers," with Fahad Al Kubaisi, the July 14 release of "Seven" marks the start of his career as a bonafide solo artist.
Fans have been waiting for this single since July 6, when Big Hit Music started rolling out Jungkook's promotional content for "Seven," including a short film and concept photos featuring the star showing off his physique in various outfits (one - loose-fitting jeans paired with an oversized blazer - even gives a peek at his abs). Jungkook of BTS has officially shared his first global solo single — “Seven” is here, and it includes a fun verse from rapper Latto. Stream it below.
Jungkook is no stranger to singing in English, as he does on “Seven,” having previously done so on BTS tracks “Dynamite,” “Butter,” “Permission to Dance,” and his 2022 collaboration with Charlie Puth, “Left and Right.”
The playful track is catchy and inviting, showing off the vocal abilities for which the youngest member of BTS is known: “You wrap around me and you give me life/ And that’s why night after night, I’ll be loving you right,” he sings. Latto jumps in for the bridge on the track produced by our 2022 producer of the year, Andrew Watt.

Julie Cohen’s intimate and engaging documentary Every Body is guided by a single question: In a world of binaries, where do intersex people fit? The answer — perhaps we should abolish categories altogether — isn’t very complicated, but creating that reality will be a struggle.
It’s smart that Cohen, who co-directed Rbg and My Name is Pauli Murray, opens her most recent film with a montage of gender reveal parties. The popularity of this practice, in which expectant parents plan an elaborate celebration around the predicted and subsequently disclosed sex of their unborn baby, shows how committed society is to the idea of two genders. Videos of couples staging ornate (and often dangerous) special effects, bursting into tears at the sight of pink confetti or blue fireworks, are haunting. These parties assume that children will play into normative behaviors based on their sex. They are less about the kid...

Netflix’s new Korean action drama is sure to grow in popularity with everybody’s favorite heartthrob, Woo Do-Hwan, being present among the show’s massive cast. It’s already apparent that action-packed revenge dramas are a big hit in the Hallyu industry, as we saw with the other mini-series, My Name, starring Han So-Hee. Unsurprisingly, the series is based on a webtoon by the same name that takes us back to the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic, where two rookie boxers befriend each other and get tangled up in a mighty battle with arguably Korea’s most notorious loan shark company. The bromance is impeccable, of course, and the rookie boxers who are pitted against each other in the rink become brothers outside it. It’s an interesting duo of misfits who have no similarities except that they’ve both returned from serving as Marines in the Army— A...

No matter where fate propels Oliver Twist—from the workhouse to the funeral home to the hideout of a master pickpocket—the orphan maintains a fierce sense of who he is, plus a willingness to stand up for himself and, yes, even ask for more in his pursuit of a loving home. And Benjamin Pajak, the actor who plays him, is on a similarly dogged quest: a nearly one-kid glorious mission to rescue the New York City Center’s lumpy revival of Lionel Bart’s 1960 musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel Oliver Twist.
If it felt like hyperbole to praise the 10-year-old playing Winthrop Paroo in the revival of The Music Man as the most electrifying performer on stage, there’s no need to pull punches now that he’s taken on a title role. Indeed, Pajak, now 12 years old, is a marvel in Oliver! For one, his...

On her 2017 album Music for People in Trouble, Susanne Sundfør shifted from the electronic art pop of her previous work to a more acoustic folk sound that foregrounded her lyrics about global strife. The Norwegian singer-songwriter’s follow-up, Blómi, isn’t as thematically sprawling, nor is it a return to the masterful synth-pop of 2015’s Ten Love Songs. Rather, the album is a spacious, ambient-folk meditation on optimism and purpose with a widescreen perspective of humanity.
As a collection of songs, Blómi lacks both the drama and catchiness of Sundfør’s past efforts, but her goals here are decidedly different. The album revolves around inspiration, edification, and comfort, all befitting of the title—which means “to bloom” in Norwegian—and serving as a marked departure from earlier songs such as the urgent “Accelerate” and lovelorn “Undercover.”
In her pursuit of solace, Sundfør draws on the worship music of various cultures for inspiration.

Keshet International has closed deals with Dpg Media (Belgium), TV 2 (Denmark) and TV4 in Finland and Sweden for the hidden camera investigation “Undercover: Sexual Harassment – The Truth,” which debuted on Channel 4 in December.
Produced by Kalel Productions, the film sees investigative reporter Ellie Flynn revealing the true extent of sexual harassment towards women of all ages in the U.K. Accompanied by hidden crew members, she goes undercover, enduring countless harassment online and in real-life.
“These are stories that women tell one another in their friendship groups or on social media. I wanted to show that feeling,” Flynn tells Variety.
“Sometimes, when you try to explain how sexual harassment feels or the impact it has on you, people – and by people I think often men – just don’t get it. It was trying to highlight that, [saying]: ‘This is why we are scared.’ It can happen anytime you go out.

In Mo’Nique’s new Netflix stand-up special, the Academy Award winner spends some time talking and joking about her stint on The Parkers. However, a profit participation suit filed today against Paramount Pictures, CBS TV Studios and others is no laughing matter.
“While the Series has proven to be a major financial success for its producers and distributors, the series’ talent have not been permitted to share in the fruits of that success,” declares the breach of contract action over the sitcom that ran on the now defunct Upn from 1999 to 2004 (read it here).

Stars: Jackie Chan, Andy On, Liu Haocun, Kevin Guo, Xing Yu | Written and Directed by Larry Yang
Jackie Chan’s latest film, Ride On, is a long way from what most of us have come to expect from its star. Rather than an all-out action film mixing lots of fight scenes and physical comedy, this has been dubbed an“action dramedy” by its makers. Those makers include writer/director Larry Yang, known for dramas such as Adoring and Sorry I Love You. This is another way of saying it’s a serious film about family and the choices we make in life with some fight scenes and the occasional joke about getting a faceful of horse farts.
Lao Luo is a stuntman who has seen better days. He scrapes by these days working as an extra or posing for pictures with his stunt horse Red Hare. In an eventful few hours,...

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.
And what of Ruth Wilson’s Alice, last seen taking a short drop off a tall tower? She’s not listed among the cast this time, but there’s no saying that wily brainbox won’t find...

Reed Hastings just made a bold claim: That Netflix is the “biggest builder of cross-European culture.”
Speaking at Netflix’s European headquarters in Amsterdam today, the streamer’s founder and Executive Chairman said an “unexpected” outcome of pushing into European originals was how series and films from one country had performed in others.
“The amazing thing has been [seeing] how many Germans or Italians watch Spanish series,” he said. “We didn’t set out to do that, but we’ve become biggest builder of cross-European culture in the EU. It’s partially because all the other networks are national networks who specialize in one language group. We specialize in connecting.”
He quipped it was “ironic it’s a U.S. company” that achieved that level of soft power. “Or a U.S. company that’s now a Dutch company,” he added.

Scientology is often a sore subject in Hollywood. While it has its famous poster boy in Tom Cruise, some people are violently opposed to the church because of its allegedly shady dealings.
Several celebrities have stood with the church through it all. Others have left and spoken about their times in it. However, one popular early 2000s TV series had somewhat of a Scientology convention with multiple Scientologists starring in it.
‘My Name is Earl’ was about redemption
My Name is Earl follows a small-time thief who makes a long list of all the wrongs he has done. He seeks out anyone he has ever hurt to make amends. Earl gets the idea of turning his life around after getting hit by a car while celebrating his lottery ticket win.
He loses the ticket after the accident, but once he makes good on his promise to be a better person,...

The 46th César Awards, France’s top film honors, have been handed out in Paris, with Dominik Moll’s crime thriller The Night of the 12th winning the best picture trophy.
Moll’s The Night of the 12th, which premiered in Cannes last year, scored 10 César noms coming into the awards show, just behind Louis Garrel’s The Innocent, which picked up 11 nominations. Cédric Klapisch’s Rise, about a ballet dancer (Marion Barbeau) who, after an injury, seeks a new future in contemporary dance, was up for 9 Césars, as was Albert Serra’s Pacifiction, a thriller featuring Benoît Magimel as a morally-challenged Haut-Commissaire on an island in French Polynesia.

Well, that was a Valentine's Day to remember!
Everything about The Rookie Season 5 Episode 16 was pure entertainment, with an eventful Valentine's Day and friction among our favorite couples that sorted itself by the end credits.
All the characters had their hands full with a saran gas and ebola issue to resolve.
It only feels right that for a Valentine-themed episode, we'd have all the couples with some tension in their relationships for various reasons, big or small.
For Nyla and James, his mother was overstepping with monitoring the baby via a webcam site. And you couldn't blame Nyla for being creeped out by the whole ordeal.
It's one thing to check in on the baby now and then, but to go as far as to give unsolicited commentary and opinions about something or send Nyla a robe because the one she had on while breastfeeding her daughter was too ratty goes beyond what's acceptable.

As a charter member of the Egot club (she was just the second to attain that status), Barbra Streisand has displayed her talent on the screen, on the stage, and as a musician for more than six decades. Now, at the age of 80, Streisand is putting the finishing touches on her very first memoir, My Name is Barbra, a comprehensive look back at a career that is nothing short of breathtaking. With 11 No. 1 albums, five No. 1 singles, and nine Grammy wins (not counting her Grammy Legend and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards), most people would assume that Streisand considers herself a musical artist first. But Streisand told us years ago that’s not the case — believe it or not, acting has always been her first love. As if the ending of “Enola Holmes 2” isn’t complicated enough, the film’s post-credits scene sets up an entirely new wrinkle to the franchise — albeit an exciting one.
For context, Sherlock battles a sense of loneliness throughout the film, and Enola recognizes this. He even at one point advises her to avoid going down the same path at all costs. After Tewksbury confesses his love for Enola and she reciprocates, this doesn’t look like this will happen for Enola.
“I really love Sherlock’s loneliness, which I think is not just because he’s from a dysfunctional family and he lives alone, but also because mentally he lives in another framework another level from everyone else. He can’t do small talk,” said director Harry Bradbeer in a recent interview with TheWrap.

“Life Is a Highway” could have been the unofficial theme song of Thursday’s Jesse Williams-directed Grey’s Anatomy. Not only did Bailey and Addison road-trip to a family planning center, but Meredith used some of the frequent-flier miles she’d racked up going back and forth to Minnesota to visit Boston (hi, Jackson). On top of all that, Catherine pondered an altogether different kind of trip — to, you know, the other side. And if you read on, we’ll pry open everybody’s travel diaries.

Netflix is continuing its investment in South Korean programming, as the director of the groundbreaking zombie film "Train to Busan" and the shocking Netflix series "Hellbound" has a brand new series up his sleeve. Prolific director Yeon Sang-ho has a phenomenal filmography worth checking out, but his newest venture, "The Bequeathed," is definitely something worth getting excited about. Yeon will serve as the creator and writer of the thrilling new series, while Min Hong-nam, who was the assistant director on both "Train to Busan" and its sequel film, "Peninsula" will be fulfilling the directorial duties.
Kim Hyun-joo, who starred in "Hellbound" will play a woman named Yun Seo-ha, who inherits a plot of familial land following the death of her uncle, and experiences a series of strange events as the land also serves as the familial burial ground. Netflix is staying in the Yeon Sang-ho business, confirming production on his latest creation, The Bequeathed. A suspense drama, it weaves an intricate family history into a subject matter deeply rooted in Korean tradition: family burial grounds.
Hellbound creator and Train to Busan and Peninsula filmmaker Yeon also recently set horror series Parasyte: The Grey at Netflix. For The Bequeathed, he will serve as creator and writer. Min Hong-nam, who has worked closely with Yeon as an Assistant Director on Train to Busan, Psychokinesis and Peninsula, will take on helming duties.
The Bequeathed centers on Kim Hyun-joo’s Yun Seo-ha, a young woman who inherits family land upon the sudden death of her uncle and finds herself mired in strange events that unravel deeply buried family troubles. Kim’s credits include Hellbound, Undercover and Watcher.
The cast also includes Park Hee-soon as the astute police detective Choi Seong-jun, who catches onto the connections between the mysterious events occurring in the town and the burial ground.
Park Byung-eun is Choi’s younger colleague and the squad chief who is gripped by envy and a feeling of inferiority owing to an incident from the past involving Choi.
Ryu Kyung-soo plays Seo-ha’s younger half-brother Kim Yeong-ho who gives her plenty to contend with.
There’s no word on timing as yet, though Netflix will release globally. The Bequeathed is produced by Wow Point and RedPeter Films.
