Enter Rex, Cody, Fives and Echo

Just a classic story which really shows the strategy of war more than most other Star Wars media and tackles a few darker themes and moments, also introducing a handful of fan favourites. 8.7/10

Best Episode of the First Season
femkemvs27 December 2019
The first season of Clone Wars was very hit and miss overall and is definitely the weakest of its (so far) six seasons. This was the best episode of that season and still holds up as one of the best of the entire show.

Rookies demonstrates one of the show's major strong points: the Clones themselves. It is the first of several Clone-centric episodes and although you only know these Clones for under 30 minutes, the episode is able to quickly establish their individual personalities and make you care for them. Two in particular would go on to be some of the series' best and most beloved original Clone characters.

Definitely a great episode and worth a watch.

Strong episode. Great to get more into the minutiae of the Star Wars universe.

I like how the the interior of the clones' outpost resembles the Empire decor style. The 001 on the back of their armour is the same or similar to what Imperial Stormtroopers have. Tidy touches. I like the new Sepratist Commando Droids but do they have to say "roger, roger"...

One of the reasons some prefer Star Trek to Wars is that Trek can go more into the minutiae of the universe, such as branching off to focus on a story about an android and his cat. Star Wars greatly benefits from stories like this one. A small scale tale in the vastness of the universe, but one that has surprising weight for a show that 'looks' aimed at a child demographic.

Excellent Episode

This is one the best episodes of the series! This is when the series first started. Its the first clone characters you'll care about. It establishes Rex, Fives, Cody and Echo all fan favorites! It also has the one of the best sacrifices in the series! Watching the season 3 episode shows the awesome chemistry between the characters. Its one of the best relationships. It also shows how clueless these clones really are. Its also more adult with the 2 uses of the word hell. One always makes me laugh.

I enjoyed this episode in every aspect. Its one of my favorite of the series. Also one of the only episodes to promote adult themes!

Best Ep. of Season 1

This is (for me) easily the best episode of this season. Clone arcs are so good. My 4th favourite arc is the Clone Cadets arc. My 2nd favourite is the Umbara arc. This episode is part of the Clone Cadets arc. Therefore the best of the season. Lair of Grievous comes very close!

Best of Season One

This episode truly lives up to the series name. It's Clone Wars and we are here to get to know the Republic Clones and the Separatist Droids.

This episode is about the clones. It shows the "boring" jobs some clones get and how quickly everything can change for them.

Also I feel like the message here is that even if you're just a small (seemingly unimportant) part of a bigger machine when you're called upon you can still become the hero and do your job better than anyone else. (Or maybe I'm overthinking).

The only reason it's not a 10/10 is that it didn't give me that 10/10 episode felling and maybe if the animation was as good as during the later seasons I would give it a 10.

Either way still a great episode and a definite must watch from Season One.

Rookies

This was the episode that really got me hooked on the show back in the days. I loved the development of the Clone Troopers. The fact that they are given some character and aren't just soldiers anymore gives so much more baggage as the show carries on. This was the first episode where we really got a sense of who Captain Rex was, and his legacy definitely endured, as already in this episode, he is a true badass. The action sequences were fiery and visceral, and the stakes were there. It demonstrates what this show can do at its best and how much it gets you invested in the characters, even though they carry masks throughout most of it. A personal favorite of mine and the episode that set the stage for the show's future.

I can see why a lot of people like the way the clones are humanised and personalised in the Clone Wars series, it adds some depth to them and adds interest when they are on missions etc.

I appreciate a good clone-centric episode when done well as this one is. The portrayal of them as such independent individuals is actually quite deep and complex given how they ultimately turn on the Jedi in Revenge of the Sith. In RotS the clones unquestioningly obey the Order 66 and destroy the Jedi on the word of Palpatine. Even Commander Cody attempts to destroy Obi Wan without hesitation. Clone Wars adds an extra layer of tragedy by humanising the clones, showing that they have camaraderie with the Jedi and have some feelings but explains towards the end why they turn on the Jedi. It is powerful.

Here we get a depiction of clones who are sometimes rebellious and usually very independent which is jarring compared to how they behave in RotS but you have to wait til season 6 and 7 for the clone story to all pan out and be explained.

This episode is very enjoyable in itself and creates character development for Cody and Rex very effectively as well as developing the relationship between them and Obi Wan and Anakin.

My rating: 8/10
