The isekai formula is simple — the protagonist is reborn or transported to another world, often caused by sudden death. With memories and knowledge of their previous life, the protagonist experiences their new one with a desire to grow stronger, avoid dying or set out to fulfill their dreams. Lately there has been a rise in “shojosei” isekai. If you’ve been around long enough, you’d have figured out just from seeing the term that it merges “shojo” and “josei,” two genres marketed toward different audiences: younger women and adult women, respectively. One of the earliest examples of shojo isekai is Fushigi Yugi , but in the years since, we’ve seen a heavier emphasis on isekai with male protagonists. It’s already tough as a shojo fan (more on this in another article), but it’s another to be in communities where we’re constantly swept off to the side...

In a time of reboots, remakes and sequels, Wattpad Webtoon is aiming to bring more original stories to Hollywood and counter that franchise bloat. As Wattpad Webtoon Studios president Aron Levitz tells Variety, the goal is to show production banners and media platforms that loyal webcomic and series fans will tune in to their TV adaptations of those titles. And so far, it’s working.
The Webtoon-adapted K-drama “Sweet Home” and Wattpad-originated young adult film series “The Kissing Booth,” both on Netflix, has given the company an early boost in making Hollywood inroads. And now, the recent hire of former Fox Entertainment and AMC Entertainment president David Madden as head of global entertainment is another example of the company’s move to further ramp up its entertainment industry presence.
“We’re better and stronger with two massive IP libraries, united with tons of stories and over 166 million people around the world coming to create,...

Viz Media has appointed former Crunchyroll executive Sae Whan Song to the newly-created post of VP of content (animation). He will lead Viz’s content acquisition strategy and be responsible for execution of the company’s co-production strategy.
Song began his career in licensing at Toei Animation before moving over to Crunchyroll where he was instrumental in its transformation. There, he was helped build a successful rights management team before transitioning the company from a licensing and acquisitions model to co-productions and original productions strategy. Crunchyroll was acquired by Sony in 2021 and has since been integrated with Sony’s Funimation. His credits at the company include “Blade Runner: Black Lotus,” with Alcon Entertainment and Warner Media; “Tower of God,” “God of High School” and “Noblesse” with Webtoons; and “Fena: Pirate Princess” and “Shenmue the Animation,” with Adult Swim.
“Sae’s expertise has set an unparalleled standard in today’s highly competitive anime acquisition business.

“One day, you will receive a message from an unknown sender. The message will only include your name, the fact that you are going to hell, and the time you have left to live. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide—no escape. When the time counts down to zero, supernatural beings manifest to condemn you to hell. As the nation falls into unrest, a new religious sect begins to interpret the bizarre occurrence as the will of the divine. Could this be a sign of something grander—a blessing in disguise, a holy reckoning, or an evil curse? Amid social chaos and increasing hysteria, the people must find a way to survive this inexplicable terror.” (Dark Horse Comics)

Eleven months in to 2021, and Warner Bros. movie streaming strategy on HBO Max is still going strong. Now the list of new releases for November 2021 on HBO Max is highlighted by yet another big ticket film.
King Richard, starring Will Smith, is set to arrive on HBO Max and in theaters on Nov. 19. The movie will tell the story of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. Smith is already getting some early awards buzz for the role so Oscar-heads may want to check this one out.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...

Everybody has heard of Netflix and Amazon Prime, but if you are looking to watch something a little bit different or want to watch content from other countries, you may find that subscribing to some of the more niche international online streaming services may give you more of the content you are most interested in.
Often, for people who want to watch a particular type of international content such as Korean dramas, Bollywood movies, British comedy, or anime, the choices available on US services like Hulu and US Netflix can be very limited. While it is possible to watch shows from other countries using Vpn services, it can also be a real boon to find a specialist streaming service that has lots of the content you most like to watch, ready to go, subtitled in the language you want.
