The "coke" that the crack addict offers to the Econo Guy was actually a bag of director M.D. Schneider's mother's ashes, who died a few months before the movie was filmed. Schneider said it was his way of "dealing with her death" and has said that she would have found it funny.
The title was a reference to We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen (2005), the documentary of the punk band Minutemen, of whom Linn Benton was a big fan. Econofilms would continue the Minutemen references for their next few movies.
The idea behind the film was to make a movie "as boring as possible". M.D. Schneider and Linn Benton came up with the idea while watching 1408 (2007) and decided to do a movie like that, but if "absolutely nothing happened".
While the credits of the movie state that it was only filmed on June 24, 2019, the shots of the Econo Guy waking up the next day were filmed on June 25.
