“The Kissing Booth” actor Taylor Zakhar Perez says he was surprised by co-star Jacob Elordi’s criticism of the rom-com franchise.
“I thought it was a shame because to my knowledge, everybody else had such a wonderful experience,” Perez told me Thursday at the GQ Men of the Year party at Bar Marmont in West Hollywood.
“It’s a shame that was his experience on the set. Especially when those movies came out, it was a time when we really needed something like that,” he said, alluding to the Covid pandemic. “I know from our fan interactions, getting stopped everywhere I go, what ‘Kissing Booth’ means to people and what it brought them during such a dark time. I guess the silver lining is he still made people laugh and feel good.”
Elordi sparked headlines earlier this week by bashing the franchise in his GQ Men of the Year cover story.

Jacob Elordi's résumé is impressive, given the actor's relatively short career. Born and raised in Brisbane, Australia, Elordi always knew he wanted to be an actor. According to a 2022 GQ cover story, he idolized actors like Marlon Brando and Heath Ledger, which sparked his interest in performing. At the age of 12, he started acting in school plays, and by the time he was 17, he landed his first film gig as an extra in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" (2017), per Just Jared. The following year, he starred in "Swinging Safari" and Netflix's "The Kissing Booth," which launched him into stardom in an instant and opened many doors for him to star in other works, including the acclaimed HBO series by Sam Levinson, "Euphoria," which will return for a third season in 2025.

Exclusive: Matthew López, who won the Best Play Tony Award in 2020 for his drama The Inheritance, was at the BFI Imax theater in London’s Waterloo on Thursday night for the special preview- a premiere in all but name- of Prime Video’s romantic comedy feature Red, White & Royal Blue, which he directed and adapted from Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel.
WGA member López stationed himself in a holding room inside the building, well away from the red carpet, because, he said, “I’m on strike as a screenwriter but not as a playwright and not as a director.”
His two stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez were not in attendance. As members of SAG-AFTRA “they’re on strike,” López said.
After our conversation, the filmmaker made his way into the Imax auditorium and addressed the audience as director of the film.

No gray area here: With 88.55 million hours viewed over its first three days, “The Gray Man” starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans had the fifth-best launch week for a Netflix movie since the streamer began keeping (and releasing) records early last summer. The film’s ranking includes both English-language and non-English titles, though no foreign-language movies come close to Netflix’s Top 5 all-time.
The spy vs. spy movie blew away its closest competition, “The Sea Beast,” by nearly 55 million more hours viewed last week. The kids’ movie was in its third week and thus had seven days of viewership counted. Last week, its second one of availability and first full week on the platform, was the best one to-date for “The Sea Beast” with 68.11 million hours viewed.
“The Gray Man” enjoyed the most-watched opening weekend for a movie on Netflix since “The Adam Project” accumulated 92.43 million hours viewed in March.

Under the new hours-watched weekly metric charts implemented by Netflix back in November, the Shawn Levy-Ryan Reynolds reteam The Adam Project exploded with 92.4 million hours watched by the streamer’s subscribers for the week ending March 13. The figure includes all hours watched for the movie — both those who’ve watched it once and multiple times.
The Adam Project follows a time-traveling pilot who teams up with his younger self and his late father to come to terms with his past, while saving the future. The Adam Project hit Netflix on Friday, March 11.
In August, the delayed 20th Century Studios title Free Guy, directed by Levy and starring Reynolds, was a big breakout hit for original fare on the big screen as the box office was coming out of the pandemic, grossing $121.6M domestic and $331.5M global.

Last week, three studios made major announcements that suggest Premium VOD income isn’t enough to prioritize it over other platforms; this week, the VOD charts suggests a drop in the momentum toward home viewing options. This may be temporary, with “Candyman” (Universal/$19.99) scheduled for release September 16, but Disney will present the rest of its 2021 movie slate as initial theatrical exclusives. Universal placed “Halloween Kills” day-and-date on Peacock October 15, and Paramount announced that it would replace chairman and and CEO Jim Gianopulos with the more Paramount+-friendly Brian Robbins, currently head of Nickelodeon.
Warner Bros. provides same-day HBO Max access for its theatrical releases, but James Wan’s “Malignant,” a $40 million-budgeted horror film, mustered only 735,000 viewings (per Samba TV’s estimate). Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho” this weekend and next month’s “Dune” should do much better. Disney’s “Free Guy,” just announced for September 28 PVOD, should also find high interest.

“Respect” (United Artists/$19.99) was released on the big screen on August 13 to high praise for Jennifer Hudson’s portrayal of Aretha Franklin but a disappointing gross of $17 million in its first two weeks of play in over 3,200 theaters. That meant the film got an unusually quick transition to home platforms on August 27. Early results show the film could return a higher amount to the distributor that way than via its theater play.
The biopic, appealing primarily to an older audience, and thus more of a challenge for getting people in seats, added Premium VOD on Friday. It is #2 on iTunes, trailing only the much cheaper “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (Lionsgate/$5.99) in total number of transactions. Google Play, which usually lags a day or two in capturing activity, has it at #4. Vudu, which calculates by revenue, places it at #3 for the seven day period ending Sunday, but #1 over the weekend.

However Disney ends up dividing the bounty from Marvel’s “Black Widow,” it is now adding to the haul with added revenue sources. After a month of exclusive Premium VOD availability through Disney+, all other platforms, like Roku and Amazon, are offering the year’s highest grossing film in theaters for the same $29.99, but without needing to subscribe to the streamer.
The vagaries of talent contracts, and how their payouts are related to reaching profit (a likely far-off point for the multi-hundred million dollar effort), remain unclear. But what is known is that along with its strong theatrical response, the money it is earning is increasing.
“Black Widow” is #1 on iTunes (usually quickest to respond to new releases) and currently #3 at Google Play. Both these rank by the number of transactions, not the revenue accrued. It is also #1 at Vudu, which charts by how much money was paid to view.

How many movies does it take to tell a story about high school senior Elle Evans (Joey King) trying to decide whether to honor her friendship to lifelong bestie Lee (Joel Courtney) or break the “rules” by dating his smoking-hot older brother, Noah (Jacob Elordi)? If you’re Netflix — the content factory that milked “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” for its full trilogy potential — then the answer is three, obviously. Except the makers of “The Kissing Booth” didn’t have a solid book series to fall back on, nor a compelling romantic rivalry to stretch across multiple movies.
What they did have was the data to suggest audiences wanted more. I too wanted more — less of the same, but a little substance for a change. How great would it be if Elle found enough self-respect to pursue her own dreams, rather than deciding her future according to which...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “The Kissing Booth 3,” out now on Netflix.
For “Kissing Booth 3” star Joey King, it was imperative that the last installment end the effervescent Elle Evans’ story in a way that was “just right.” Luckily, as an executive producer on the Netflix rom-com, King got her say.
“Finding the right way to do the send-off and figuring out what was best for the final edit was probably the heaviest area that I was involved in,” King tells Variety of her EP duties. “That was very exciting for me, because I just want to make sure that for me, for all the filmmakers and for all the fans, that our send-off was just right. I really hope they feel that way.”
But, that doesn’t mean that the conclusion is predictable. In fact, the finals scenes of “Kissing Booth 3” play out...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Marlon Wayans says it’s time for a sequel to “White Chicks.” In the 2004 comedy, he and his brother Shawn Wayans star as FBI agents who pretend to be the young white vapid socialites that they have been assigned to protect from a potential kidnapping. “I think ‘White Chicks 2’ is necessary,” Marlon Wayans tells me. “I think we’ve tightened up so much that we need to loosen our ties a bit and laugh a little bit.” The $37 million film grossed more than $113 million worldwide. “I don’t think Hollywood understands what a juggernaut ‘White Chicks 2’ would be,” Wayans says. The brothers have plenty of story ideas for a sequel. “And the world just keeps giving us more,” Wayans says. “‘White Chicks 2’ is writing itself.”
The actor can now be seen on the big screen playing Aretha Franklin’s (Jennifer Hudson) abusive first husband Ted White.

If you found yourself swooning over Taylor Zakhar Perez while watching Netflix's The Kissing Booth 3, you definitely weren't alone. The 29-year-old heartthrob plays Marco, and yes, that really was his beautiful singing voice you heard in the second film. Though he's made appearances on Scandal, Young & Hungry, and iCarly, The Kissing Booth 2 marked his first starring role.
Now let's get down to the important stuff, shall we? Is Taylor single? Even though fans are shipping Taylor and Joey King, Taylor appears to be single. In an interview with Glamour in 2020, the actor stated that he wasn't dating anyone at the moment. He also revealed what he's looking for in a partner. "I love adventurous people, someone that says yes all the time. I paddle board and hike and surf, so I feel like my friends are my type. I'm a huge proponent of dating friends or...

Joel Courtney may have found love with Rachel in his role as Lee in Netflix's The Kissing Booth, but off screen, he's happily married to Mia Scholink. Joel and Mia have actually known each other since they were kids, and in 2017, they began dating. The 25-year-old actor popped the question to Mia on Valentine's Day in 2020, and seven months later, they tied the knot in an outdoor ceremony in Arizona. "I am just so thrilled to be married," Joel gushed to People at the time. "It's one of those things where as much planning and as much anticipation goes into the day, I'm so excited to be married to my best friend." To celebrate the release of The Kissing Booth 3, see Joel and Mia's romance in photos ahead.

What I most appreciate about the Kissing Booth rom-com trilogy is that it’s savvy enough to know when to indulge in outlandish adolescent wish-fulfillment and brave enough to depict its teen protagonists as realistically drunk, horny revelers. Based on the book series by Beth Reekles, who was a teenager herself when she imagined what would happen if a spunky video gamer finally grew boobs and ended up seducing the high school bad boy, the films have no compunctions about showcasing underage pleasure. Kids make sex tapes in their high school classrooms, casually down shots without any subsequent preachiness and fall into ...

It's the end of an era, and it's never easy to say goodbye.
Netflix's original romantic comedies The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys were popular since they began in 2018, but both high-school rom-coms closed out their adventures this year.
Based on teenage writer Beth Reekle's novels, The Kissing Booth franchise has been a hit. In the first two Netflix films, we watched Noah and Elle's secret love affair and how they dealt with long-distance when tempted with other crushes.
In The Kissing Booth 3, Elle Evans made one of the hardest decisions of her life and chose where to attend college and broke one of the Flynn brothers' hearts.
Picking up around two months after The Kissing Booth 2, a series of romantic montages caught us up on the lives of Noah and Elle and Lee and Rachel before heading into the film's main arc.

Sure, Netflix's The Kissing Booth is filled with dramatic romances, but one of the best parts of the trilogy is the friendship between Elle and Lee. When Joey King and Joel Courtney aren't showing off their incredible chemistry in the films, they're goofing off with each other off screen. From striking a pose on the red carpet to dancing in hilarious Instagram videos, their real-life friendship would probably make their own characters jealous.
In an interview with Backstage, Joel said his friendship with Joey really helped him jump back into character for the sequels. "I was a little nervous to see if I was able to pull it off or not," he said. "The second I read the script and Joey [King] and I got together on it, I was like, no, this is not going to be an issue, bringing a character back is not going to be as hard.

Elle Evans (Joey King) has some big decisions to make before she heads off to college, starting with which campus she wants to call home for the next four years. Will she follow friendship rule No. 19, "Always go to the same school as your bestie," or will she move to Boston with her hunky boyfriend, Noah (Jacob Elordi)? If she chooses Berkeley, will she and Noah's relationship survive another year of long distance? And then, of course, there's Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez), who's still vying for Elle's heart. Elle has a lot to sort through in The Kissing Booth 3, and with so many life changes on the horizon, you might wonder if we'll see a fourth movie with Elle at her selected college.

Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth” franchise began with sexist and retrograde attitudes toward its high school-age lead characters, then evolved into a collection of romantic tropes and tricks that give the genre a bad name. Now we are left with the final insult: Three films in, this series still doesn’t get its leading lady. In the face of icky writing, limp directing, awful pacing, horrific green screen, and terrible jokes, star Joey King spent three film adaptations of Beth Reeckles’ YA novels injecting heart and humor into her Elle Evans. Still,

We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.
That is to say that Netflix has some really good library TV titles this month that harken back to the glory days of the fall TV network calendar. August 1 sees the arrival of two of the best NBC shows of all time: Tina Fey comedy 30 Rock, and life-affirming (American) football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’ve not seen either, catch up with them both. That’s an order.

Brand New Cherry Flavor looks like one of the wildest shows of the year -- and that's a good thing.
Netflix on Friday dropped the full-length trailer.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around what went down because of how out there it was, but it looks exciting.
"Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) comes to LA dead set on directing her first movie," reads the logline.
"But when she trusts the wrong person and gets stabbed in the back, everything goes sideways, and a dream project turns into a nightmare," it continues.
"This particular nightmare has zombies, hit men, supernatural kittens, and a mysterious tattoo artist who likes to put curses on people."
"And Lisa’s going to have to figure out some secrets from her own past in order to get out alive."

Brand New Cherry Flavor arrives on Netflix on Friday, August 13th.
Sounds like a nightmare, right?

The year 2021 saw us getting comfortable. We somehow made it through the presidential inauguration, D*nald Tr*mp is no longer spewing his rhetoric on Twitter, and slow but steady vaccine rollouts have given us a sense of hope about the pandemic. So 2021 snickered to itself and said, "Y'know what? Let's throw 'em a curveball no one would ever be able to predict." And on the 34th day of the year, out came Golden Globes nominations for Emily in Paris - quite the curveball indeed.
Is Emily in Paris worthy of an accolade reserved for truly exceptional film and TV productions? To quote the French, non.
The Netflix show surprisingly managed to nab not one, but two nominations: one for best TV series in the musical or comedy category, and lead star Lily Collins secured a best actress nod in that same category for her portrayal of the clueless yet charming Emily Cooper.

Netflix is putting a pin in two of its most popular movie franchises.
The streamer on Tuesday announced an expansive 2021 movie slate, which was coupled with the announcement that beloved franchises To All the Boys and The Kissing Booth would be releasing their final movies.
Both franchises have been huge for Netflix, delivering bumper viewership over the last few years, but three movies each seems like enough when you consider the romantic nature of the flicks.
To All the Boys: Always and Forever will star Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Janel Parrish, Anna Cathcart, Ross Butler, Madeleine Arthur, Sarayu Blue, and John Corbett.
"As Lara Jean Covey prepares for the end of high school and the start of adulthood, a pair of life-changing trips leads her to reimagine what life with her family, friends, and Peter will look like after graduation," reads the official logline for the final chapter.

Sad news for fans of Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth” and “To All the Boys” franchises – both will be coming to a close this year.
Along with Netflix’s announcement of its 2021 movie slate, the streaming platform confirmed that each franchise’s third film — “The Kissing Booth 3” and “To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean” — will be the last.
Both of the rom-com trilogies have performed extremely well on the platform. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos called the original “Kissing Booth” film, which released in 2018, one of the most-watched movies in the country, with one in three viewers re-watching the film. “Kissing Booth 2,” which premiered on July 24, 2020, was the third-most viewed release on Netflix that weekend, and became one of its most popular titles of the year. Netflix has long since blown past the snooty preconceptions of the Hollywood elite that dubbed them as a mere streaming service, with the company currently churning out some of the most acclaimed shows on television and countless feature-length awards season contenders on an annual basis. The old guard tried to resist the inevitable paradigm shift for as long as possible, but based on both the quantity and quality of the in-house originals, Netflix can now comfortably be viewed as genuine rivals to the traditional major studios.
Of course, that takes a whole lot of investment, with close to $20 billion being funnelled into content last year, and that number only set to rise even higher. When “The Kissing Booth 2” premiered on July 24, Taylor Zakhar Perez had about 70,000 followers on Instagram. Within a week, he had three million.
