Aster's orders for gun action against Japanese survivors is based on the action of Captain Dudley W. Morton of the USS Wahoo (SS-238) in January 1943. The nickname given Aster and the Moray, "The One-Boat Wolf Pack," was given to Morton and the Wahoo, and controversy surrounding the killing of the survivors is also true to historical fact.
