Quotes
-
Soames Forsyte : What is your idea of a wife's duty? I've never known.
Irene Forsyte née Heron : Soames - do you remember the day I agreed to marry you? I promised then to do my utmost to be a good and loving wife to you, and I've tried to keep that promise. Oh, my God, Soames, how I've tried.
Soames Forsyte : There's been very little sign of it.
Irene Forsyte née Heron : But you made a promise, too. You said that if our marriage weren't a success, you'd let me go. Is it a success?
Soames Forsyte : It would be if ... if you behaved yourself.
Irene Forsyte née Heron : You promised.
Soames Forsyte : I did no such thing.
Irene Forsyte née Heron : You swore it, Soames, on your honour. Will you let me go?
Soames Forsyte : How can I? We're married. Oh, now don't talk such nonsense, never, do you hear me? Never again; I won't put up with it.
Irene Forsyte née Heron : Then you won't let me go?
Soames Forsyte : What on earth would you do with yourself if I did? You've got no money.
Irene Forsyte née Heron : I could manage somehow.
Soames Forsyte : Once and for all, I will not have you say such things. It's wrong and impossible. So never speak of it again.
Irene Forsyte née Heron : Don't you understand? Do you still refuse to believe it? I loathe you, Soames. I loathe the very sight of you.

[Soames is waiting for Irene's return, and clearly been has for a while. He hears her return: she happily removes her gloves and hat in the hallway. He enters, surveying her]
Soames Forsyte : Very pretty. Very pretty. I don't like that blouse. It's a shapeless thing.
Irene Forsyte née Heron : Don't touch me!
Soames Forsyte : [He grabs her wrist] Where have you been? Tell me at once, where have you been?
Irene Forsyte née Heron : In heaven - out of this house!
