Horrible is the only way to describe this
DrPostman8 December 2009
OK, so I gave it a chance and suffered through all 20 minutes of this newest offering from Syfy. The guys who do their Saturday night movie dumps must have come up with this one. The animation is strange, putting human heads on animated bodies looks bizarre and not at all the comic effect I'm sure they wanted. The jokes are stale and juvenile and I'm willing to bet even teenagers wouldn't laugh at them. I was hoping for something along the lines of Tripping the Rift but I was sorely disappointed. There is no comparison. I'm beginning to wonder if the execs at SyFy actually take the time to screen shows or just listen to the pitches they get and then green light them. Most of the time I will give a new series at least a second episode before I judge them. 5 minutes into this mess and I didn't know if I could last the other 15. I did though, and really wish I hadn't.

Worst Series on SyFy ever aired
precableados10 December 2009
Make yourself a favor and don't ever, ever watch this series, it was so bad, my eyes bleed, my dog died and my TV got cancer.

Weird looking characters, unfunny jokes at best, cheap animation and boring plot is a way too nice review for this piece of horrible sin that should be thrown into a bottomless pit.

I really don't know how did this show air... Don't they have a quality control before spending tons of cash in a show so bad, that i had to watch for 20 minutes because all the time i was thinking "wait, it cannot get worse" well, guess what... IT CAN.

Give me my dog back!

I Hope Scyfy Keeps This One!
nikkirineholt2 January 2010
I know a lot of people think Scyfy and comedy don't mix... but I for one was a huge fan of Garth Marenghi's Dark Place, and I think people need to give this show a chance. I saw the previews for the show, and immediately I had high hopes... but upon watching the pilot, I felt the show was very dry (at first). But by the time the show ended, I was in love with the show, and my hopes had been fulfilled.

I gave the other episodes a chance, and a lot of them were surprisingly good. Lots of laughs to be had with this show, please give it a chance... watch more than one episode! It took me a couple episodes to start understanding and liking certain characters.

In conclusion, this show is really good... but I can tell it's not very popular. The theme song kicks butt, the characters are hilarious and well written... very bizarre CGI effects that add to the humor... WATCH THIS SHOW!

Worst Show Ever Made
jamesharmer-14 July 2010
I am normally extremely generous in my opinions of TV shows and to say that this show was the single worst show ever made would be flattering.

So strongly did I hate this show, I was forced to review it in the hope that my review can help just one person in the world avoid certain disappointment.

The animation which was a combination of real heads on animated bodies started out weird and ended up annoying.

I did not find humor in one single joke and I strongly advise that no person ever watch this show.

This show is a shocker!!!!

Absolutely frigging hilarious.
aprilalison2315 April 2010
This show belongs in the funny and clever comedy ranks of Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, Arrested Development and Trailer Park Boys. Anyone who marked this show with low stars clearly wasn't in on the jokes. I've watched each episode at least twice and laugh. One of my top 5 favorite shows ever. I thought my husband was nuts for watching this at first until I watched 2 episodes (trying to give it a chance) and then I was like, "This is hilarious!" Do it. Try watching at least 2 episodes and I dare you not to laugh. It's just that funny. The characters are unique and cleverly developed. They're not just the cookie-cutter stereotypes found in so many sitcoms today.

You should really give this a chance!
thud-510 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Unlike the previous reviewer I kinda like this. It is a combination of lower-budget CGI backgrounds and bodies with live action heads. The effect is a little odd at first, but the actors do a pretty good job given that they probably didn't know what their bodies were going to be doing when they recorded their parts.

Basically, a crew of not-the-cream-of-any-crop explorers are in deep space doing something (not really explained). In episode one they encounter an alien ship filled with macho red males bent on domination and a cutesy red female liaison person. Our crew blithely shows their crew everything about our ship, including weaponry and shielding, while they refuse to show any of theirs. In the end, we beat them, there is a little implied alien sex, and the Captain's treasured liquor storage unit get destroyed. Bummer!

Is it derivative? Absolutely. Take two parts "Tripping The Rift," add another three parts of the BBC series "Hyperdrive" and toss in a little "fart" humor from National Lampoon movies and you have the idea. The plot of the first episode is easy to follow (read that: sort of shallow and easy to guess how it will end up) but the handling of the presentation — animation and faces, remember? – help it move right along. Even the juvenile humor can be ignored/enjoyed a bit..

As I said at the top, you should give this a try, perhaps at least 2 or 3 episodes before making up your mind. I'm not sure how long a run this is scheduled to have, but I think the writers/producers could easily get 20-24 shows out of this before it might grow a little weary.

Oh, and careful viewers will spot things that casual viewers may miss.

i've given the show a 7 based on the first episode; I may change my opinion up or down based on the next several of them. Watch with me, won't you?

Not bad for mindless comedy
rkersting30 December 2009
This show is the Dumb and Dumber and dumber and dumber... of sci-fi space comedies.

The basic premise is that while the cream of he crop of humanity is out exploring the galaxy, the misfits, bums, and other losers of mankind just wander around for no apparent reason. These are their misadventures.

I've seen a couple of the episodes and they contain fairly solid mindless comedy. Some of the other reviewers compared it to "Tripping the Rift." I think I'd add some 3 Stooges, "Son of the Beach", "Office Space", "Space Balls", and the 70's series "Quark." If you are looking for high-brow comedy, look elsewhere. However, if you just want 30 minutes of silly humor from a show that obviously doesn't take itself the least bit seriously, this is worth checking out.

With all of the stale comedy around this was funny
wesley-muffinater12 December 2009
I am almost not a Teenager anymore but i thought this was one of the funniest shows i've seen in awhile. Its not stale like every other cartoon comedy out there. Being a stickler for good animation it didn't take me long to get that the animation is half the fun.there used to be times when me and my friends could laugh about a joke on TV shows like South Park and Family Guy for weeks, but its all the same formula after all these years. I really enjoyed this show, stupid comedy is something i miss. plus if you like any Science fiction space movies or TV show you will find this a kick. So give this a chance for at least a few episodes it was truly darn funny.

SeaLab 2021 meets Star Trek! Awesome show!!!
tommy_67279 January 2010
This show is great and really creative.

It plays off the fact that it's low budget and relishes in it. The writing is amazing and the comedy is intentionally silly, smart, and irreverent.

The only way to describe it is Sealab 2021 (adult swim) with a Star Trek setting... but since Sealab is a little obscure another way to put it is South Park meets Star Trek, as the story lines revolve around poking fun at the star trek themes.

If you were a fan of Sealab 2021, or the home made adult swim comedy shows you will absolutely love this show.

The majority of reviews on this new show are great but every once in a while you get some who is way to serious and comes in and complains about the production value... while letting it go way over there head that it was intentionally made this way and that it's unique artistic flare adds to the punch line of the show.

Low Budget At Its Finest
staticdrifter11 August 2010
The creativity and imagination involved in this show is above and beyond! The comedic talents alone are genius. It takes a bit of getting used to if you've allowed yourself to be inundated and insinuated into the "norm" of network comedy. This show is not for the faint-of-laughter or the humorless.

This show makes fun of every aspect of a space-related series whether it be comedy or serious. From chain-of-command to personal life to first-contact interaction, nothing is sane or sacred. Such a refreshing and irreverent approach to entertainment that has not been seen since "House".

The script is fresh and unhindered by social norm. Impudence and imprudence run rampant and free and make no apologies. The human condition is cloaked in the raiment of cheek.

It doesn't take a huge budget or top names to make great entertainment and "Outerspace Astronauts" proves it.

Way to go, guys! Put this show back on the air!

Really enjoy it
eegah200017 January 2010
The characters are great, the visuals are kinda neat, and it's pretty funny. And best of all, it's different. Now, I'll admit that it's not the funniest thing ever, but I do enjoy it a bunch and hope that it continues.

Brimley is my favorite character. All of the best lines comes from him. The only character that I could maybe do without is Kennedy. The actress who plays her does a poor job, in my opinion. I never find her to be believable. Everyone else is awesome, though.

Please, SyFy, keep showing this! This is a hundred times better than any of those crappy original movies that you show! Finally a reason to watch your channel again after you canceled MST3K!

A smart space satire
zathrus129 December 2009
I've read some of the reviews here complaining about this show, and it just goes to show that some people really don't have much imagination.

This show is not your run of the mill cartoon (like we don't have enough of those already). The animation is intentionally weird, but so what? Not everything has to look like it came from Disney - and the use of live action heads allows the characters to have human expression while hitting a low production cost point.

The writing on this show is what I enjoy. It is sort of a cross between Star Trek and Green Acres. Commander Dick Amos is a space age equivalent of Hooterville's Oliver Douglas. He's the only reasonably sane person in an environment filled with odd-balls, incompetents, and just plain morons.

Like Oliver Douglas, Commander Amos continually struggles to control the anarchy around him when he'd probably be better off just to sit back and let it happen. Things in this show tend to take care of themselves in odd and unexpected ways.

This show isn't for everyone, and you're either going to get it or not. If you don't, just move on and watch a rerun of Three's Company or something similarly non-challenging. If you have a more adventurous sense of humor, put on your "Diplomatic Hat" and enjoy it.

Fun & quirky (I really hope SyFy picks up another season)
quietsight17 January 2010
I really enjoy this show! I've watched the five episodes a few times now, and my only disappointment is that there aren't anymore available – yet.

The animation is as quirky and awkward as the characters and the situations they find themselves in. As strange as it may seem, the animation style (with the actors' live-action heads attached to animated bodies) totally works for this show. I've met the show's creator Russell Barrett (great guy!) who said he started with nice CGI bodies, but they looked creepy. After giving it more of a cartoon/2D look, I feel he ended up with the perfect vehicle to deliver his tongue-in-cheek writing.

The show is certainly not meant to be taken seriously. It is light, fun, goofy, sarcastic, and witty – all with a dash of space adventure flair.

I sincerely hope SyFy gives the crew of the O.S.S. Oklahoma another season. Watch a couple of episodes, and if you like it let SyFy know. More Outer Space Astronauts, please!

Excellent short animated sci-fi
peter-sodja1 February 2011
I really love this show. It takes a few moments to adapt to the animation style and after that it really complements the humor style as well. It is a simple show with fresh witty jokes and extremely likable characters. I say that its simple, because this is not a satire as most of todays animated comedy shows are. There is no social critique involved, no deeper meaning to watch out for and nothing in the show will make you uncomfortable. Its just pure relaxed fun. The word simple doesn't do it justice though, since the story, characters, animations and dialog are very well made. Even though at a first glance it looks like a miscellaneous low budget show, this is really a gem.

Highly underrated Series that deserved a few more seasons
dubwize2 February 2023
Cleverly written, brilliantly acted and atypical typecast austen tayshus characters make this an instant underground Cult Classic that needs a serious reboot. Has some hidden tributes to a LOT of classic Sci Fi references *(If you actually find them..) Since I randomly found this series online I now watch it at least twice a year every year since, and it always gets a laugh.

The animation style is unique and well stitched with acted vision which at first is a bit quirky but very quickly proves itself as very clever and really well done in it's own right.

The comedy and humour is applicable from kids to grandparents, and if you find a person who doesn't find this show funny, chances are they have no humour at all as a person.

The characters definitely grow on you as you watch each episode, and by the end you are always left wanting more. They all are adorable except for that weird mustached androgynous looking one, who is completely hilarious. However the way it's acted, written and delivered plus the combination of ingenuity and freshness that makes it work so very well and distinguishes this Series as an absolute classic of Modern Art Animation of all time.

Definitely clever stuff.

Bring on Season 2 and 3 I say. Lol In the very least, make this available on DVD> I would definitely buy it!! Worth the ten stars.

A glorious mistake?
mrmeach6 June 2023
Sci-fi? Check. Animated? Half a check. Comedy? Check-a check-a check-a..... This caught me by surprise as I'm sure it did everyone who heard about this new (2009) animated series on SyFy and expected something on the order of "Cowboy Bebop" or "Ghost in the Shell." "Futurama" would be a closer fit, but even that comparison wouldn't prepare you for this thing. It's now 2023, and it's hard for me to comprehend that this quirky gem is well past a decade in the rear-view mirror. As you can see from the reviews here, there is no middle ground for opinions. You'll either get the humor and give it a 7 (or better) or you'll stomach the first 2 minutes before dismissing it with a 1 or 2.
