New Delhi, July 18 (Ians) Even as her latest film ‘Zwigato’ has found a permanent place in the core collection in the library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, actor-director Nandita Das laments that it is a pity that ‘smaller’ films are not getting enough releases in cinemas.
Despite the fact that for the past 15 years or so, the participation of independent films made in India has increased dramatically at major international festivals, Das feels the economics of running a theatre has become quite difficult with the advent of Ott platforms.
“Only very big budget films, which are more of spectacles, can afford to be distributed in theatres. We as filmmakers would want our films to be on the big screens where the audience commits their time completely to watch a film. But despite all the so-called growth, several other categories of middle-class young men and women reel under pressure to find themselves age- and skill-appropriate employment.
For the Alpha generation, the e-commerce food delivery companies are a blessing, for they cater to the needs and orders of the customers who are more demanding and have more convenience and control over how and when they order their food. Mumbai, May 23 (Ians) Actress Shahana Goswami feels web shows have ushered better quality of writing, which in turn creates scope for actors like her to prove their versatility.
In her latest show "The Last Hour", Shahana plays a police officer who, along with another male counterpart, sets out to unravel a murder mystery. Did she feel she was a strong female character in the otherwise male-dominated world of the story?
"I think when something is well written, there's a natural balance about the portrayal of each character in it. When I am saying balance, it means we do not need to highlight a character only because he is a male or a female character but giving substantial space for each of them. When it comes to my character in 'The Last Hour', where I play an investigating police officer, it was about the contribution of the character in the narrative.

New Delhi, Nov 11 (Ians) Tisca Chopra says the tendency to stereotype in Bollywood is not easy to duck, and going against the wave is a challenge.
"Ducking stereotypes is not easy, particularly in Bollywood, which is famous for stereotyping actors. In case you portray a role well, you'll be offered the same role further. The same character will be offered to you with a different name in film after film," Tisca told Ians.
"It hasn't been easy to duck the stereotypes, I've had to stay without work to not repeat the characters. It has required me to have fortitude and patience but I've been fortunate that sooner or later something interesting has come to me. It has also pushed me in the direction of creating my content," added the actress, who has produced the short film "Chutney".

National Award-winning actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has worked with several talented female filmmakers in his career. Nandita Das called the shots in "Firaaq" and "Manto", Reema Kagti directed "Talaash" and, recently, Tannishtha Chatterjee wielded the megaphone in the upcoming "Roam Rome Mein". Siddiqui says as an actor he does not differentiate between talents based on gender.
"When I work with a filmmaker, I am not concerned about the gender of the storyteller. For me, whether it is Nandita or Tannishtha, they are talented storytellers. They came to me with a vision and I am participating in telling their stories on screen. For me, what matters the most is creativity, and I have to be on the same wavelength with the director. Talent should not be celebrated on the basis of gender. So, when Tannishtha was directing me, not for a single moment did I feel that a woman was giving direction.

From the very first scene, we are introduced to the world of Saadat Hasan Manto in Nandita Das’ “Manto”. It is not his life that we are introduced το, but the world of ideas that constantly took shape in his fertile imagination; however, we do get into the world he lived in in the very next scene. It is the world of a colonized India on the brink of independence. After World War II, it seemed likely that India would get its independence, however people were still unsure about the circumstances it would come in.
In a emotionally moving scene from the movie, Manto, a free-thinking Indian Muslim looks on from the window of his bedroom the euphoria of people celebrating outside, there are fireworks all around and optimism about the future. He asks his wife to join him and look at the spectacle, he picks up his young infant and whispers,...

Flix"A society can grow and develop only when it gives space for dissent and free thinking. And this shrinking space threatens democracy," Nandita said.IANSPTIDemocracy is under threat in India with "artists, writers and rationalists" being attacked in some form or the other, says acclaimed actress and filmmaker Nandita Das, who feels conservatives and right-wing groups are increasingly becoming the country's moral police. Be it the debate around growing intolerance in India or the agitation around the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film "Padmaavat" or the issues around "S Durga" or the occasional calls to put a temporary ban on Pakistani talent from working in the Hindi film industry -- the conversation around the extent of creative freedom in India keeps coming back. And Nandita feels there have been attempts to silence creative voices. "Martin Luther King Jr. said: 'Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter'. These days whether it is media or individuals, people are being censored by self-proclaimed vigilante groups or are self-censoring themselves, out of fear," Nandita told Ians in an e-mail interview. "Conservatives and right-wing groups are increasingly becoming the moral police. At the same time, official censoring bodies are becoming more bigoted and their rulings are getting more and more subjective and arbitrary," added Nandita, who had faced protests over her socially moving and bold film "Fire". The actress noted that "artists, writers, rationalists are all being attacked in some form or the other and are being silenced". "A society can grow and develop only when it gives space for dissent and free thinking. And this shrinking space threatens democracy and human progress," she said. Taking her forthcoming film "Manto" to draw comparisons with the current scenario, the director said: "Manto was tried for obscenity six times because he wrote about sex workers, giving them dignity that was rare and used the language of the street, deemed inappropriate. He said, 'If you can't bear my stories, it is because we live in unbearable times'." After having helmed "Firaaq" in 2008, Nandita went behind the camera to trace the life of writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Nawazuddin Siddiqui will be seen bringing the character to life. "Manto" is expected to release in India in September. Manto, who died in 1955 at the age of 43, penned an impressive body of work touching various genres. He churned out about 22 collections of stories comprising a novel, essays, personal sketches and movie scripts. Out of his literary gems was a story on Mirza Ghalib, a poet who is often compared with the stature of Shakespeare. His work also gained attention for weaving stories around the ordeal of partition as well as sexuality. "Manto", co-produced by Hp Studios, Filmstoc and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, was the only Indian film in Un Certain Regard category at 71st Cannes Film Festival. It will also be screened at Sydney Film Festival that will start from June 6 and will go on till June 17. The film provides a window into his life during the tumultuous partitioning of British colonial India into two new nations -- India and Pakistan. Do you think Indians have moved on from there? "Far from it. Partition remains a very important part of the subcontinent's narrative. It has been invoked for all kinds of reasons. "Sometimes for political agendas, sometimes to understand the pain and trauma some still feel today. Close to 14 million people were displaced, hundreds of thousands of people were killed, women raped... all the heinous crimes that come with sectarian violence. It is bound to have a lasting impact. But I am not sure we have learnt all the lessons that we needed to learn." Nandita doesn't agree with the calls to put a temporary ban on Pakistani talent working in the Hindi film industry. She asserts the role of art is to build bridges and not walls. "When there is political tension, culture can become the means to bring people closer, lessen prejudice and trigger conversations. Whenever I have been to Pakistan, I find people in admiration of our democracy, diversity, art, culture and in particular, cinema. Good stories are local in their context but universal in their emotions. It is a pity that we in South Asia cannot travel and collaborate freely. "If we want to be peaceful, we need to have peaceful co-existence with our neighbours." The actress, who garnered critical acclaim with films like "Earth" and "Bawandar", points out that there is a need to fight terrorism. "Fight governments that encourage it instead of stopping it, but we also need to have the wisdom to separate the people from those governments. People are suffering there too. Art can in fact become the balm to our common wounds." This isn't the first time that the brilliant actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has made a deep impact. In Kabir Khan's New York and Nandita Das' Firaaq, Nawazuddin was singled out by every moviegoer for his resonant portrayals. He's done it again in Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani. But this time Nawazuddin's turn as a volatile intelligence officer has willy-nilly triggered off a corporate war between two production houses in whose next project Nawazuddin plays an important role. In Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's production of Talaash, Nawazuddin is cast in the role of middleman who is a prime witness in the murder of a pimp in the red-light area. Nawazuddin claims it's a pivotal role. But how pivotal can Nawazuddin be in a film that stars Aamir? In Gangs Of Wasseypur, which comes in two parts, Nawazuddin is cast in the pivotal role in Part 2. Dusky beauty Nandita Das is on a different high — motherhood — and is taking a ‘break’ for her first born Vihaan with industrialist husband Subodh Maskara till she calls the shots for her next directorial venture.

There seems to be much bewilderment about the word ‘crossover’ in Indian cinema. A crossover film can quite literally be a film that crosses over its domestic market and performs well in international markets. But this definition, though endorsed by many filmmakers sounds too commercial. Are crossover films then those films which are based on a broad theme that a wide audience internationally can relate to irrespective of its box office performance? Or is crossover simply a term used for films which are neither here nor there; films largely shot in India with an Indian cast but international productions. Much as we may want, a Slumdog Millionaire or a Monsoon Wedding certainly cannot qualify as ‘Indian’ films that crossed over.
Then, what really are crossover films and can Indian films really crossover? This question has been subjected to innumerous debates time and again. It was addressed one more time at...

After winning multiple Filmfare awards for her directorial debut, it was a grand homecoming of sorts of Nandita Das in Kolkata which is not really her hometown. Nandita is an Oriya by parentage. But because of the number of films she has done in Bengali she's often mistaken for a Bengali. So it was when she landed in Kolkata last Sunday. Armed ecstatically as she was with her 4 Filmfare awards for Firaaq, the city greeted her with open-armed ovation. "The last film I shot in Kolkata was Paddakhep (Footsteps) with Soumitra Chatterjee," she says from the sets of Onir's Afia. "We're now shooting all over the city." Nandita is naturally overjoyed with the Filmfare awards for Firaaq. "To be honest I was surprised to find Firaaq's nomination in so many categories. It shows that even the popular space is acknowledging a film like Firaaq that tends to be slotted as a niche film.

Saturday night’s star-studded ceremony featured some of Bollywood’s biggest acts with of course a shimmering parade down the red carpet first! Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan returned as the masters of ceremony along with Karan Johar (clearly the trio are a well-oiled machine.) The winners included; Best Film and Best Director (Rajkumar Hirani) for 3 Idiots, Best Actor & Best Actress to Amitabh Bachchan & Vidya Balan for Paa. Boman Irani bagged a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor for 3 Idiots, Kalki Koechlin for Dev.D. while A.R. Rahman’s music won for Delhi – 6. Meanwhile the critics favored director Nandita Das for Firaaq, Ranbir Kapoor in Wake up Sid, Ajab Prem Ki Gazan Kahani and Rocket Singh, Mahie Gill for Dev.D.. And now here are the more “juicy” highlights, just like I promised; the good, the bad and the ugly way!
