Micro budget teen party slasher
Leofwine_draca7 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this micro budget slasher under the title THE DEVIL WITHIN: RISE OF EVIL. It's a film about a teen party that takes place in the hills with all of the music, good times, boozing, nudity, and drug taking that you'd expect. The twist is that there's a psycho on the loose working his or her way through the cast, pushing this into horror territory.

For this type of film it's quite well shot and features a convincing portrayal of high school life. The problem is that it's all set up with no convincing pay-off. One actor is the spitting image of William Sadler but doesn't have Sadler's talent. There's a lot of nudity and sexuality here but only brief snippets of gore and the unappealing characters make it near unwatchable, despite the glossy look.

The music video that never ends
vampyrecowboy28 September 2010
My review is this...

As a music video, this would fare well.

Lots of pretty faces and hot bodies.

As a story,this sucks.

It just drags on and is too boring.

No gripping tension. No sheer terror or angst.

Even the action is close to none...and for suspense???? Nay...none of that either.

I didn't pay to rent this and I'm glad.

Glamour porn is what this is...2 steps above softcore and 10 steps below a real movie with any real merit or grit to it.

Scary??? NO! Frightening? No! I guessed the killer to be - in the beginning and was right.

This just had much missing - even though it had so much to offer...but failed.

To the director - keep making those rap videos and pop star videos.

If you're short on work, you do great porn!

'The Devil Within' can only be described as cinematic genius.
jhonan20 March 2012
I admit my expectations were low when I started watching, but from the very first spine-tingling moment I was captivated.

The film opens with a tension-filled scene set in a seedy part of Hollywood. The photography is comparable to Citizen Kane, combined with the amazingly original plot line of a hooker who meets up with a madman and utters the classic line "Do you like it rough?" just before he kills her.

Kudos to the scriptwriter for that totally unexpected plot point. From the minute we see the crazy psycho sitting in a darkened corner of the motel room, we have no idea what he's about to do. And neither did the hooker.

This sense of shock twists and turns its way through the film. And although the plot gets lost somewhere in the fog of film-making, this masterpiece culminates in a teenage-party murder-fest the likes of which I've never seen before.

The continuity and editing need a special mention. The smooth transition from a pool party filled with 40 teenagers to a darkened house with no more than 6 people within the blink of an eye was superb and truly caught me off guard. I can only guess the editor and director collaborated on this master-stroke of confusion.

And the reveal at the end of the movie was a total shock. I won't spoil the twist in this short review, leaving it to the viewer to enjoy the outcome.

Finally, look out for the actress who played the handicapped girl. A truly Oscar-winning performance; she deserves a nomination nod at the very least. She totally grabbed my attention when she fell asleep on the bench at the party, and then put all her emotion into raising a finger to point at the bedroom 'She's up there' she stammers, pure terror etched on her face.

Not to mention the climax where she hobbled and stumbled away from the killer, and decided that a dark alley would be the perfect place to hide. Hollywood watch out!

Pretty bad
torroutedipz7 May 2018
Bad and boring. From the description I was hoping the saving grace would be gratuitous sex and nudity, but even that was few and far between. Sorry the movie doesn't deserve an in depth review.

Profoundly Awful
airgoeg7 August 2010
This movie is so dire, words can hardly express. Only watch it if:

a)You thought the last primary school pantomime you attended showcased some brilliant acting talent;

b)An engaging plot is unimportant to you;

c)You like to know exactly how a movie is going to end after you've watched the first 5 minutes; or

d)You're happy to watch anything where trashily dressed women constantly take off their clothes / can't keep their hands off themselves.

I watched this film with a friend who is a big fan of movies that fall into the 'd' category. Even he was forced to exclaim, about five or six times, oh my god, this is awful. Still, he argued, it's one of those movies that's 'so bad it's good'. I begged to differ. Two scenes in particular spring to mind 'the belch off concluded with a fart' scene and the 'I really need to pee' scene (the second one). Both impacted my quality of life in negative and irrevocable ways. My friend believes that the 'girl upside down with the pink panties on' scene should earn it a second star at least (as opposed to the one star which I generously awarded it, because I was forced to do so). Watch it for yourself and decide, or take my recommendation and re-caulk your shower recess instead, it's about as much fun and at least you'll care about the outcome.

The worst movie I have ever seen! Be warned!
delboy238015 October 2010
I have just registered myself on IMDb only to warn people about this truly terrible film. The only reason why it has a score of 3.3 at the moment is because of a couple of idiots, who either fancy one of the actresses or get off from slasher movies.

This film has no storyline. It tries to create a plot at the beginning, but then doesn't follow it at all. As "airgoeg"'s review suggests, you have to be brain dead to enjoy this movie.

The acting is awful. There is no feeling from any of the cast. The only believable characters are a weed dealer and a street preacher, unfortunately both of which you hardly see any of, and are not even needed in the film/story.

Trust me. I am normally easily pleased when it comes to films. I am able to find the good in most things, but I don't care if this is low budget or not. I still wouldn't use the script to wipe my own *@#*. Even though it is only 1hr 15mins long (1hr 15mins too long in my opinion), I still feel I have wasted part of my life watching this film.

Revolting, dragging example of the worst cinema ever conceived!
Icons7630 August 2012
Sorry if i may sound a bit harsh! But let me tell you that in these days when, it is almost becoming an increasing habit to download for way to cheap or from the black market, any type of music and movies, without realizing that by so doing, they are destroying the only creativity left in the Entertainment Industry, and that, eventually and very soon, production will come to a stop, if they so keep on stealing, i am the one of those few, who always pays for his own movie tickets, DVD's/Blue Ray's and CD's! So i also feel the full right of bluntly honest expressed, when i payed for this abomination. A plot, that makes no justice to cult or Horror Films, and quite bring to a whole new level the word demeaning. Something so horribly created, directed, acted, well, if, of acting we can even talk here, where, even the savvy partial nudity is profane and vulgar and cheap, since all girls don't even seem belonging to the world of acting, but more to the one that represent the oldest profession the World can ever remember of! The guys are just so plain, considering all those talented, unusual, penetrating faces the world of underground Horror often tends to present, and i am thinking about people like Sid Haig,Tony Todd,Domiziano Arcangeli, Dylan Vox or even Toby Hemingway or Desmond Harrington, that probably weren't even available to read such a detrimental script,so shallow, bland, and juvenile, that you keep wondering how someone could even wanna produce! And last, but certainly not least,"something" filmed so badly to be able to bring to mind only some sort of real bad, poorly executed students film, whose director, had been plagued by severe hung over, during the weekend of this ill fated production! What else to say? Nothing, there's just nothing else to be said, sadly, and think that, normally i find great guilty and rewarding pleasures by exploring titles like this one,but here there's only one thing you may be wanna fully aware of: Run!

It tries
kosmasp4 December 2013
We all know that movie covers do lie to us and portray a movie more attractive than it actually is. But saying this has "creative" ways in any connection is just absolutely unacceptable! While you may be able to overlook the "acting" and the "story" itself, there should be something that makes this at least a bit interesting. And here we come to the other selling point of it: Twist If you want to call it that. It's completely insane and nothing people will be amazed by.

On the other end, there is neither enough blood or nudity to hold the attention of the intended group of watchers. Don't get me wrong there is blood and there is some nudity and intercourse. The latter depicted in two scenes. And one of them is shot in a nice way actually (intercut with people dancing and music people might find good). That and the beautiful people in it, might make this bearable for you. Better script and some nice effects next time and we're good

So bad its unreal
crossx77-112 June 2011
OMG this film is so bad its unreal, in fact its that bad I've even took the time to write this review which is something Id only do if something annoyed me so much that I feel I need to warn others.

How it was ever made with such a crap script and bad actors is beyond me, it really has nothing good about it...... Oh I tell a lie the only 1/2 decent thing about it is partly clothed hot chicks; apart from that its not worth the energy pressing play on you DVD player!!!

Hopefully there wont be a sequel and this film will be quickly forgotten because I for sure won't be remembering it!

Hopefully this will stop others for making the same mistake as I did by watching this!

Bloody, Brutal, and Powerful
HorrorSociety22 April 2010
Now, when I first heard about The Devil Within I was thrilled and when I read the synopsis I was even more but after I got done watching it I thought… it wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. There is lots of room for improvement but there were some good things about it. The main story centers on a group of 'high schoolers' who are throwing a super 18 party, well, drama between the group heightens and on top of that… there is a killer loose.

What I really enjoyed about this movie was the overall theme of this story… near the beginning of the film there is a long lecture of the 7 deadly sins and how greed leads to all sins, which is an interesting theory and it's also brilliant to see how these analogies play into the film because every character in this film is guilty of these sins. When the end twist arrives, it plays out real nice.

The beginning played out well and it really sets up the tone of what this movie could have been and even in the end sequences, this movie gets heightened really fast and it turns into a horror/slasher flick that I actually enjoyed. There was blood, there were brutal killing scenes and I really enjoyed the twist.

With that being said… there were some things that I did not like. First off, I was mislead into thinking this would be a supernatural thriller with the principal killing for rituals, then most of the movie turned out to be a teen drama and it wasn't horror until the very end, so to me this movie wasn't sure of what it was. I was kind of disappointed because I really wanted this to be a slasher or a supernatural movie.

The characters were unlikeable with the exception of three; two being a couple of idiots and one being a teen struggling against her alternate lifestyle and the others are unlikeable… even the ones that I liked turned out to be cheating and bad and I get it's realism but I wasn't please.

In essence, this movie was okay, it wasn't the best and it sort of let me down but I think this movie had a powerful message and I understand why the movie is called The Devil Within but I really wish this movie had executed properly. There were some powerful scenes but there is room for improvement. This movie was excellent but from a general movie standpoint it's okay.

Some Bloody Good Fun for all
Svengali-20016 August 2010
Let me admit from the first that I am a fan of the lovely Miss Liz Di Prinzio and that I see a great future for her and that she is definitely one of the best things about this movie and I can see more better and better films coming Liz's way as she masters her craft. She is both talented and a very hard worker and very honest and passionate about her work and that shows through in this film.

The movie has lots of good points and like any budget teen flick also has all the negative points like stereotyping and mixed degrees of skills from both in front and behind the camera.

In the end the good points outweigh the bad and this flick has enough fun and gore and teen sexiness to entertain.

The opening scenes are edited really well although the alley scene, while critical to the story could have been handled better. The second half of the film flows better than the first part and the director needs to show more pace when establishing his actors or give them some tighter dialogue. The highlight was the dumb and dumber actors and of course the two female leads, Liz Di Prinzio and Sarah Harrison with good support from the vampy teen *itch played by Liz Bell. All three bring something to their roles and the beefcake school jock is exactly what you would expect, but he is outshone in all his scenes opposite Liz and Liz!!! The murder scenes were pretty well executed with some nice touches, which I won't reveal here, and the denouement is well done too and better than a lot of similar films in this genre.

Overall this film gets a 6 from me, but for movie lovers who like to see actors who are going places then see this one and enjoy Liz Di Prinzio and her two fellow female leads because I can see good things in the coming years. I love watching actors develop and change and grow and despite this film's budget restrictions it's still well worth checking out and has some excellent moments and nice touches.
