This episode opens with a duel between Colonel Brandon and Willoughby, something that merits one line in the novel. This is the first time this moment has been filmed.
Dan Stevens fell ill with tonsilitis during the shoot. He later quipped that there were very few shots in the entire series that featured him in full health. The swelling around his neck meant that many of Stevens's scenes had to be shot in extreme close-up.
The horse that Dan Stevens rides on at the end of the episode is the same one that Colin Farrell rode in Alexander (2004).
