Neil Patrick Harris Is Excellent In Season Four Opener
slightlymad2218 December 2014
The resolution to the cliffhanger ending to season 3, and we find out her answer to Teds proposal in the season three finale.

Plot In A Paragraph: Ted is worried he does not know enough about Stella, and he and Marshall worry if she will like their favourite movie 'Star Wars'. Barney reveals to Lily that he may be in love with Robin, and she encourages him to tell her how he feels. Meanwhile Robin is frustrated about the state of her career and Marshall is VERY bored due to his long term unemployment.

I love the Star Wars plot, and Marshall's explanation as to only good reason a person would have for never seeing it made me laugh!! But once again Neil Patrick Harris steals the show, every time we see a different side to Barney he knocks it out of the park. Tip of the cap sir, for a job well done.

Do I Know You? (#4.1)

Warning: Spoilers
So Stella says "yes". And the story of this episode makes it seem as if it was a mistake, since Ted knows nothing about her. The idea with Star Wars was pretty good. Ted and Marshall's enthusiasm was hilarious to watch. Especially with Marshall hiding behind the couch.

Barney being in love with Robin was also a good idea. We once again see Barney in a different way. He becomes a more complex character. His refusal to believe that he wants a relationship yet wanting actually a very clingy one was fun and he performed it perfectly.

I am not sure what will be with this now. Is Barney over it or not. And I also am not sure where I would want it to go. While I liked this episode and enjoyed this side of Barney, I remember I disliked Robin in relationships and am not sure I would like to lose Barney the womanizer.

A turning point in the series

Warning: Spoilers
Neil Patrick Harris has often stolen the show, but after this episode, his Barney Stinson is officially the main character. As a new level of vulnerability and depth is added to Barney, we realize that we haven't seen Harris' talent being fully exploited in the first three seasons. With this new character arc to portray, he is finally allowed to shine as the star that carries the show.

As a consequence, Josh Radnor has to bring his 'A' game to make people still care about Ted. And he delivers in this episode. He always seems to be more comfortable when Ted has a serious love interest. His work with Sarah Chalke (Stella) is no exception. Both main story lines - Ted realizing he does not know his new fiancé as well as he thought, and Barney confronting his feelings for Robin - balance well and form a brilliant episode.

Marshall and Lily only have supporting roles here, but should not be overlooked either. Continuing unemployment has an impact on Marshall, which is portrayed realistically and true to life. This affects his overall mood, but he's still being a great friend to Ted, as always, whose mission is to make sure his best friend doesn't marry the wrong woman. The Star Wars sub-plot was hilarious. Everyone should have a friend like Marshall.

As for Lily, it's nice to see Barney confide in her. Despite their dichotomy, Barney seems to let Lily get closer into his personal comfort zone than anyone else. After all, she lived with him for two weeks when no-one else from the group had even set a foot into his apartment. He must really trust her, especially considering how bad she is at keeping a secret. Then again, it surely wouldn't seem right to talk to Ted about being in love with his ex-girlfriend. And Marshall has already failed as a trusted third party when Barney told him he slept with Robin.

Season 4 starts as strong as season 3 ended, with a setup for interesting new character arcs. Wherever they may take the show, though, let's not forget what Barney said in the end about his heart truly belonging to bimbos. It may have been a self-defense mechanism, but it made a lot of sense from the character's perspective.

Not as good as I expected
joeliyiyang24 September 2008
I was looking forward to see this episode a long time ago. And I can't believe 45 out 49 voters gave 10 on this episode. My personal favorite episode was slap bet. And this one is not as good. Firstly, I think the relationship between Ted and Stella was too fast. I can't believe Ted was prepared to get married. Maybe the director wanted to finish this show in the future. The story that Stella doesn't like star wars was kinda lame and not funny at all. Marshall became much less fun in this episode. His joke was plain and never did he use his best "innocent" tone while talking. The only saving grace was Barney. He falls in love with Robin. However, I was very confused at the ending. I don't know whether he returns to the man he was. Personally, I thought a new Barney would be more interesting instead of the old one. I hope this bouncing between new and old could really create some contradiction in his personality and bring us more surprising element.
